Yvonne Strahovski Surprised By Chuck's Series Finale: 'It's Satisfying, But Almost Tragic'

Get More: Finales, Interviews, News, Scoop

We spy anxiety building in the loyal fans of NBC’s Chuck, especially for those about to read here what Yvonne Strahovski shared with TVLine about the two-hour series finale airing Friday, Jan. 27.

When asked about her expectations for the five-year-old series’ capper versus what it actually presented itself to be, the Aussie beauty – perhaps skilled by her time playing a savvy CIA agent – ably sidestepped that “trick” question, saying, “I can’t tell you my expectations, because then I reveal what the finale is not.”

But then, measuring her words with some care, Strahovski went on to share, “I had very specific things that I thought it was going to be, and it turned out to be not what I thought.”

In fact, she says, the final leg of Team Bartowski’s journey “surprised me to the point where I kind of felt like an audience member myself, sitting on the edge of my seat wondering, ‘Oh my gosh, how is this going to get resolved?’”

Wait, there are things to be resolved? Edge-of-seat kinds of things? Should fans prepare to be left hanging? “There will be a satisfying ending,” Strahovski reassures, “but it’s almost slightly, slightly tragic, the lead-up to what happens.”

A well-placed source echoes Strahovski’s intimations, telling TVLine that elements of the finale are, indeed, “pretty shocking.”

Officially, NBC’s synopses for the series-ending hours read, in part, “After a harrowing mission, Sarah returns to Chuck with a huge secret,” then, “Chuck enlists his family, friend and some unexpected allies as he races to stop [villain] Nicholas Quinn (guest star Angus Macfadyen, Braveheart) from destroying everything Chuck has built over the past five years.”

But Strahovski boils it down thusly, and romantically: “We’re going to see a lot of the focus on the Chuck and Sarah love story, which is the heart of the show.”

Chuck fans, are you readying for the show’s final mission?

  • I have a theory… Chuck always wins the episodes.. right? As in Chuck versus the Frosted Tips, Chuck is always the better man as in all the other episodes. Whoever is “versus the ……”, Chuck always wins. So theoretically, Chuck will win against “the Goodbye”. Wonder what that means…!!!

    • Unless they do the opposite, and Chuck will lose against the Goodbye…? :P

  • I really do hope that Chuck has a happy ending. I would really be pissed off if they didn’t after all they have been leading us to a happy ending since the very first episode. The show has to end with Chuck and Sarah living a normal life in a normal house with a child of there own. It also has to show Morgan finally becoming an adult and maybe marrying Alex and moving in next to Chuck and Sarah. As for Casey he has to also leave the spy life maybe starting a new life with Verbanski . As for Ellie and Awesome they also move into a house next to Chuck and Sarah so that they can have there children grow up with a loving family around them. Maybe have the series end showing Chuck and Sarah being “normal” a few years in the future, something like Sarah and Chuck driving there kids to soccer practice and smiling at one another knowing they made the right decision. I really really hope nobody dies because I feel everybody from Team Bartowski deserves a happy ending, from everything that they went through by themselves and together. If someone has to die than I think it will be General Beckman sacrificing her life so Team Bartowski can have there happy ending.

  • It’s difficult for me to even believe Chuck’s ending, let alone watching it end in a tragic way. One of my favourite series ever :( I’ll keep watching it over and over again from the beginning, every once in a while, so that I don’t miss it so much!

  • If anyone but Casey dies it would be hard for me to enjoy the finale. I don’t want Casey to die but honestly his character is setup for a sacrifice for Chuck + Sarah or Morgan.

  • After reading all these posts concerned that one of the major characters is going to die, I have to say that it is unlikely that Yvonne would refer to the loss of one of these as only “almost slightly, slightly tragic.” That would be far more horrific than almost slightly tragic so I doubt that death of a major character is the shocking element.

  • I don’t care what happens, as long as they don’t kill off Casey.

  • I love the show . I hope tragic does not mean killing off main characters.

  • All I know is I am REALLY hoping it wasn’t a whole fantasy scenario caused by the Intersect, and that none of it was real. That would make me incredibly unhappy and leave the story unfulfilled.

  • I am so so sad to see the end of this amazing show. I was hooked from the first show and at the time rumour was that it wasnt coming back. I will miss Chuck for sure and hopefully the ending is not a cliff hanger sort of thing but leaves us all with good thoughts.

  • I would rather that our favorite show end with a warm and happy feeling. To say that the last show has “shocking” elements, does not bode well……..

  • Chuck was the little show that could. Monday night is such a dead place now I don’t even know what’s on NBC.

It has been a great 5 years. There were some mistakes. But it has been a great love story with a group of actors that are just wonderful! The way television is going networks are going to be begging for shows soon that can build such a loyal fan base.

I just hope the series eds in a way, with the key actors alive, that there might be a possibility for a movie down the line. Chuck is definitely a great chapter in TV history!

  • Lets please stop with the Team Bartkowski crap. This show is not twilight people. Don’t make me regret liking this show…

  • The tragic event has to be something that makes Sarah not want to be an agent anymore. Otherwise, she’d be unhappy quitting being a spy (which is probably how the show ends).
One way would be if she’s injured somehow. Not wheelchair bound, but enough so she’s not capable of being an agent any longer.

Also, I thought I read elsewhere that someone important is killed off, and the speculation was that it was going to be Casey.

  • I am going to miss this show, but not as much as when it was still in the early seasons where it was awkward. Even in this photo of Chuck and Sarah, they look too manicured and stiff. Not like the fun-loving mismatched pair from the early years. Like many of the folks who have written in to comment before me, I think I almost care more about what happens to Casey then anyone else at this point. Morgan is definitely not on my radar anymore as he should have stayed in Hawaii with Anna multiple years ago. Hope there will be a little airtime for some Jeff and Lester, even if it is not in the form of a concert event. Those are just too bumbling sidekicks that still steal the scenes they are in. I would also love to see Bakula back, but I suspect that won’t happen since his TNT show just got the axe after the Chuck finale was filmed…

  • Morgan’s father is Nicholas Quinn/Mr. Grimes ? We never saw his picture but he talks about him. Maybe he was partners with Mr. B and also was loaded with a bad intersect ? Just a thought.

  • gosh! i really am going to miss chuck! i already know that the i’ll be crying my eyes out on the season finale…i’m so anxious for what is going to happen. “Almost tragic” doesn’t necessarily mean a bad thing. i hope for them to have a baby at the end of the season although i also think that this might be the revelation that sarah is to tell chuck, that she might not be able to have babies or something like that. i hope not…i’ll really miss much so much!!:’(

But ever since the first episode, when I was 11, “Chuck” has been my favorite show of all time and made me look forward to Mondays! I’m going to miss it so much, for sure. Best of luck to the cast and crew in their future careers, and thank you so much for 5 wonderful years <3
