Nigel Lythgoe: So You Think You Can Dance Results Show Has Been Axed

Fox has pulled the rug out from under So You Think You Can Dance.

NIgel Lythgoe announced on Sunday that Dance‘s weekly results show has been axed.

“Fox [has] canceled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD,” the show’s executive producer and judge shared via Twitter. “At least we have [a ninth] season at the end of May.”

“I’m certainly not mad at Fox — they have supported SYTYCD FOR 9 seasons,” Lythgoe added. “With the help of Mike Darnell [Fox's president of Alternative Entertainment]. I think we have some great new ideas.”

Despite the drastic change in the dance competition’s two-night format, Lythgoe urged fans, “Don’t worry…. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”

The show’s most recent finale drew just over 6 million total viewers and a 2.1 demo rating, down 13 percent year-over-year.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoy SYTYCD! We also torturously sit through Dancing with the Starts, but love the creativity and absolutely amazing dance talent presented by SYTYCD. We watch the Voice for the same reason…real talent… and love it for its focus on the talented contestants and not the judge prima donnas (ie. Simon Cowell, JLo and Howard Stern…really? Howard Stern? his expertise in music would be????) I hope that Fox will wise up at some point and understand what a gem they have and value some really consistent SYTYCD viewers who don’t flit from one new fad show to another, but look forward to every new season of real dance talent and some amazing choreography!

  2. I liked the guest dancers and that’s all so I will not miss it. I used to DVR it and fast-foward thorough it.

Although change is inevitable, it would be foolish to axe SYTYCD. I’ve watched every episode from every season..and voted….and look forward to the start of each new season. Dancing is hard work, maybe more Americans can relate to singing competitions, who knows. The quality of the contestants and the creativity on this show is amazing. I personally don’t understand the appeal of Dancing With The Stars — routines are basic, the stars are below par dancers (putting it nicely!), and the music selections for the dance routines are absurd. If SYTYCD is axed and DWTS remains…I don’t get it. I hope another network is smart enough to pick it up if Fox decides to pass. There are several other reality competition shows that are not nearly as good airing on other networks.

SYTYCD is one of the only reality tv shows that showcase real talent, instead of the “drama” backstage. I honestly think that Fox is making a mistake of cutting the results show, which showcase many unforgettable group dances. The dancers are amazing, and work extremely hard to get there.

I agree that the SYTYCD results show is the only one I don’t fast forward through. I love AI,The Voice, and The Sing Off, I like XFactor. But I fast forward to the actual results in all of them. Padding padding padding

Let’s not forget what SYTYCD has done for the art form in the last few years. As a dance teacher, I have personally seen more kids interested in dance because of this show and their participation keeps them interested in school and off the streets. It has made a big difference in their lives and has also opened up the closed minded school districts into accepting dance in their curriculums. My district is a pretty conservative district and even they have decided to start a full fledged dance program in our schools. It would be a shame to lose SYTYCD because i think we would be going backwards in the dance community once its gone.

I would be very disappointed if this show goes, it was bad enough when the CANADIAN one got cancel. Its too bad you wouldnt have a special with all the all stars on. I love this show, i took baton and jass plus one year of tap when l was younger. Please keep on the air, when my mom was alive the last thing she saw was Ben winning the titled and my mom had bad eye site and bad hearing but she seen and heard this and l thank-you for this.
