The TVLine-Up: TV Worth Watching This Week

On TV this final week of 2011: The Closer closes out its winter run, Rizzoli has a romantic reunion, Chuck spies baby woes and more. Things are still a bit sleepy on the TV front this holiday season, but we’ve dug up a smattering of fresh fare, some year-end round-ups and a few choice repeats to keep on your radar. (The TVLine-Up returns on a daily basis in 2012.)

8 pm House (Fox) |
Cuddy’s back!… sort of, in a pair of Season 7 repeats featuring Candace Bergen as the DoM’s mom, and Thirteen trying to help out a sick prison pal.

9 pm The Closer (TNT) | Winter finale: The federal lawsuit against Brenda comes to a head when another murder occurs related to Turell Baylor’s death. (Read our exclusive preview Q&A with Mark Pellegrino here.)

9 pm The Year the Earth Went Wild (Discovery) | AKA natural disaster porn!

9:30 pm MLB 2011: Tales of Triumph (ESPN2) | AKA Featuring Zero Clips of Post-Season A-Rod. [Bronx grumble]

10 pm Rizzoli & Isles (TNT) | Season finale: An arson investigation hits a snag when a hit-and-run leaves someone in the hospital; FBI Agent Gabriel Dean (guest star Billy Burke) seeks to rekindle his relationship with Jane.

10 pm Game of Thrones (HBO) | Each night this week, with back-to-back episodes at 10 and 11 pm, HBO is cycling through Season 1 again.

The TVLine-Up: Your Guide to Monday’s Holiday Weekend Marathons

8 pm Glee (Fox) |
You either loved “Grilled Cheesus” or you hated it. I fell into the first camp and will probably be checking out this encore.

9 pm Hardcore Pawn (truTV) | Father and son face off when a short-staffed disaster leads to a store full of angry customers.

9 pm Kennedy Center Honors (CBS) | President and Mrs. Obama are in attendance as singer Barbara Cook, singer/songwriter Neil Diamond, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, saxophonist/composer Sonny Rollins and actress Meryl Streep receive this year’s honors.

10 pm Parenthood (NBC) | This is the episode where Amber helped Max smooth things over with Jabbar, while Kristina got ready to give birth. You will bawl again.

8 pm From Dusk ‘Til Dawn (IFC) | Clooney and Tarantino as brothers? Good. Vampires? Good. Salma Hayek dancing with a snake. Goooood.

9 pm Criminal Minds (CBS) | This repeat features the Jacksonville, Fla. case that hit home for Morgan.

9 pm New Girl (Fox) | Believe it or not, kids, back when this comedy first started, there was a different third guy roommate! Tune in for this repeat of the series pilot and see if you can recognize the actor, who’s actually now on a different show!

10 pm State of Play (BBC America) | After Cal and his team corner Dominic Foy, they discover a connection between him and a firm who lobby on behalf of the oil industry.

10 pm Hot in Cleveland (TV Land) | Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) guest-stars as Victoria’s new (hand) model boyfriend.

  1. Michael Sacal says:

Why use an image from Sanctuary on the front page but not actually mention it in the article?

    • Michael Sacal says:

oops, there’s a second page, lol. Sorry.

    • Carmichael says:

Sorry, but there’s only one thing that will ever get me to watch Sanctuary again, and since they’ve made it pretty clear they have no intention of it happening, looks like Sanctuary ended for me with Eulogy, much like I acknowledge no Angel episodes after Smile Time.

      • Michael Sacal says:

Then you missed Ashley’s brief appearance in a recent episode (it wasn’t the real Ashley, but the actress who played the character reprised the part for about three seconds of screen time, heh).

        • Carmichael says:

When was this?? There’s no credit listed for the actress other than the first two seasons.

        • Carmichael says:

I have friends who still watch so I hear about things. If it’s not her, it doesn’t count.

          • Michael Sacal says:

The name of the episode was Chimera. In it, Magnus and Tessla are trapped inside a virtual reality realm where the bag guy shows Magnus a virtual duplicate of Ashley. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it shot, but it seemed like a new shot to me (i.e. not recycled from another episode).

            I could be wrong, though.

          • Carmichael says:

            > but it seemed like a new shot to me (i.e. not recycled from another episode). I could be wrong, though.

What I can’t wrap my head around is why if they wanted her gone so badly they’d bring her back for something like that. They claimed, at first, to have a plan to bring her back and said it was the network that wanted her out. Then they said they felt she was too much a part of the world or something and needed to go, so, I don’t know what to believe. Granted there was the issue with her surgery and what not, but they’ve had plenty of time since.

          • Michael Sacal says:

This season, her replacement, Kate, has only shown up twice.

That’s adding insult to injury for fans of Ashley.

  2. Lucille says:

I miss Cuddy like crazy. I wanna her back

  3. Danielle says:

    “Cuddy’s back!… ”

    That was just mean.

Oh, well, I suppose it means I don’t have to start watching House again.

  4. Happy Holidays Everyone! says:

Thanks, Matt (and Happy Holidays, while we are at it). We miss Cuddy too, though it is not a good enough reason to relive that craptastic season. For me House has ended after the 6th. YMMV, of course.

  5. jess says:

I wish your website had a like button for comments. Well done, sir.

  6. Stormy says:

    So, just R&I then.

  7. Hermit says:

    It’s Candice, not Candace.

  8. Julie says:

The positive thing in all of this: we’re already getting new episodes back starting next week! Huzzah!

  9. Justin says:

I’ll be watching The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles, Chuck and Sanctuary this week.

  10. Babygate says:

No more House for me since last season. I finally got fed up with his behavior. Plus the casting changes were just too much. I don’t like Billy Burke as Agent Dean in R & I. Still, for me there is only The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles. They pretty much make the winter season for me. I really wish that Kyra would reconsider her decision to end TC. Oh, I will also be watching Hot in Cleveland. Love me some Betty White….

  11. sara says:

What a perfect way to show how fans of a show can have totally different takes on it. Cuddy’s back on House at 8, so I can spend that hour getting caught up on my emails and be there at 9 for the amazing After Hours.

Glad you’ll have it to enjoy, but personally glad its only for one hour.

  12. Nadia says:

” Cuddy’s back!…” I wish! On a happier note, I’m so looking forward to “The Closer” this week. I expect epicness. Thanks for all the hard work collating this list for us, Matt. :)

  13. l says:

ahahahahahaha Natural Disaster porn XD. I’m so gonna watch that!

  14. laur222@ says:

I will Prob watch the rerun of new girl since that’s my new favorite show

  15. Anna says:

My DVR is listing a new episode of Bones Thursday.

  16. Sadie says:

Thanks for the list! It’s very handy

  17. James says:

Thanks for the info on which Glee episode is on repeat. As Grilled Cheesus makes me vomit I will definitely be passing on that one!

  18. Lisa says:

Thursday, Dec. 29 – Three Inches (Syfy) 10 p.m. – “Pilot” featuring James Marsters (Spike from Buffy)

In this potential series, daydreamer and underachiever, Walter Spackman (Noah Reid) develops a strange superpower when he’s struck by lightening. He can move any object using his mind, but only by three inches. Buffy’s James Marsters plays Troy Hamilton, an ex-government agent who tries to recruit Walter into a group of ordinary people with odd abilities who are working to battle evil. The pilot also stars Andrea Martin, Stephanie Jacobsen, Antony Del Rio, Naoko Mori, Kyle Schmid and Brandon Jay Mclaren.

  19. margaret anderson-steven says:

I was really looking forward to Rizolli & Isles, but after ten minutes of the very first episode I was finished with it. Don’t know who was responsible for casting, but they were WAY off with Rizolli. Don’t know the actresses name, but she was crap, just not strong enough for the part. Haven’t watched since. I’ll stick to the books.

  20. Aiden says:

Danggit. I was hoping there’d be a tad more info on the next episode of CHUCK. But that’s okay, just uber anxious to see this Sarah-centric hour. Guess I’ll just have to tune in. Only show with brand new episodes this holidays and I’m enjoying the heck out of it.

  21. kevin says:

Cheryl Ladd on CHUCK this week. She’s been on quite the roll as of late dating back on her guest starring stint on NCIS and she was more than disappointing about the new Charlie’s Angels getting canceled but hey she’ll always be Kris Munroe in our “heavenly” hearts. :)

  22. Stormy says:

So, did Three Inches inspire Alphas?
