The TV Characters We'll Miss the Most in 2012

When you raise your champagne flute at midnight on Dec. 31, may we respectfully suggest that you don’t just do so to celebrate the arrival of the new year? Instead, how about you think of the gesture as a toast to the characters we’ve loved and lost, and who won’t be starting 2012 with us. Such favorites as…

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Michael says:

Should’t the whole NCIS cast escape Ziva be here too because it been made clear that she the only character that matter to CBS now

    • Billie says:

      I don’t understand what you’re referencing here?

    • Tia says:

Huh? I think NCIS is being pretty fair with the story lines, personally. Tim got an ep with the Bulgarian girl, Tony with his father, Ducky with the psycho “Angel”, Abby with her brother, and Gibbs with his ex. Ziva is part of the team, but not the focus!

    • Allison says:

The topic is The TV Characters We’ll Miss..and from NCIS,why isn’t Mike Franks up?Is it because he wasn’t a repeating visitor, like Palmer?
He’s still just as memorable, and most of the crew knew something good was coming when Muse Watson showed up for rehearsals. This list is certainly incomplete from characters that won’t show up again, unless in flashback form or reruns.

  2. sirtaki says:

    awwwwwwww cuddyyyy! :-((((((

    • Saint Alicia says:

      Yep ಥ_ಥ
She was the last thing about House that kept me watching after the ill-advised team shake-ups and the dive in writing quality. Then with House’s turn for the vicious… there’s just nothing left.

    • Gabs says:

I´m still crying over Cuddy´s departure. I loved her so so much. I feel the show is empty without her and i´d like to see her beautiful face just one more time before the show is over.

      • Jin says:

Why, so House can spit in it? No offense to you, but that’s what the show has come to. Any “reunion” between House and Cuddy would go awfully for her, guaranteed.

        • spoilerchicka says:

Not enough vicodin in the world to get over the loss of seeing Cuddy each week was well said and still so true. Karma will crimp the show’s ending prematurely given the ratings and ridiculous turn of the lead character. Still shocked over the nasty treatment of Lisa Edelstein after she delivered 7 years of flawless work, excellent grace and constant support for her show and co-stars. Very proud of the actress who wisely chose to exit rather than be treated in such a ludicrous manner. Still, if I could change things, I’d have Cuddy still at PPTH instead of leave the show (totally out of character that she would dump her career after House’s assault). The show lost so much credibility in so many ways. Thank you for acknowledging her role and the fact she was the “heart” of this show. Truer words….

  3. Kiki says:

When you say “The Taylors” from FNL, I’ll just include Taylor Kitsch there for my own benefit. Tim Riggins will surely be missed!

    • Aiden says:

Tim Riggins, Vince Howard, heck even the oldies like Lyla Garrity will be dearly missed! The Taylors will always have a special place in my TV-loving heart, however.

Must confess, when I saw Coach on the headline photo of this article, I mentally grumbled because I thought Tami wasn’t going to be included (my apologies for that, TVline). In my mind, you can’t have Coach Eric Taylor without Tami as well as Tami without Coach. Those two are one. Have not seen anything on TV just like them.. Thanks, Friday Night Lights.

  4. Liz says:

To be honest, I won’t miss Cuddy at all, and I hope she’ll never come back. I also highly doubt that Cuddy was House’s only chance for happiness. No way. This person just tried to change him into a completely different person and didn’t accept him for him. How is that happiness?! I’d rather be miserable than having this kind of happiness.

    • Scarlett says:

I agree – I liked Cuddy (off and on, LOL), but by the time LE left the show her character had run its course the way they wrote it (IMO). I’m surprised how much I don’t really miss her, and I think the show is doing just fine without her. Actually, I’m really loving season 8 so far!

There is always hope for happiness, and as season 7 showed for House, Cuddy wasn’t his shot at it.

  5. Allison says:

    How did you miss Chuck?!

    • awelle says:

Chuck and the rest of his team are still with us through January. I hope we´ll get a goodbye post after the final aired on the 27th.

But for now they don´t belong here yet. They will start the year with us and then promptly leave us. :(

    • Aiden says:

Thought about that too but as awelle says, I guess they don’t technically belong here yet. In approximately 1 month, though, Chuck will be. And this thought saddens me :(
Let’s try to cheer up, though! 6 more episodes of CHUCK to enjoy :-) ..Then after that, let all hell break loose. Tears will fall as they leave us. Not gonna lie.

    • KevyB says:

The most ridiculous miss here is Ned Stark (Sean Bean) from Game of Thrones, especially since nobody could shut up about him being whacked in the first place! I’d add Khal Drogo from the show also, just for being ridiculously hot. Oh, how about “everybody who died on Game of Thrones”? Oh, and the fat girl on Glee.

  6. Sally says:

There are only two shows I watch, House and Once Upon A Time. I will definitely NOT miss Cuddy, on the contrary, I enjoy the show a lot more when she’s not around. But I’ll miss the Sheriff on Once Upon A Time. He was a good guy, but I won’t give up hope that we’ll see him again. After all anything can happen in fairytales…

  7. lala says:

I love Cuddy so so much! </3 Thank you, Ausie! :)

  8. WantToSeeHimNakedWithOliviaNotVampires says:

Thank you for mentioning Stabler here, although he should have been #1 on the 20 biggest disappointments list too.

  9. Bobbi says:

Although I think L&O SVU has done a good job with the restructuring of the unit, I miss Elliot Stabler and probably will until the show ends. No one brings the intensity he had. Olivia lost her best comrade and foil. Definitely a loss for the show.

    • Danielle H says:

Very well said. The best word for it is indeed “intensity”. Him and Olivia just made the show. I like some episodes of this season, but it’s not great and some weeks I contemplate deleting it from my season pass queue.
Hope he’s back and sexy on True Blood in June!!!

  10. yep says:

Yep, losing Cuddy was a crucial and costly mistake, and FOX/NBCU honchos know that by now better than anyone. We miss her terribly, but judging from this flaccid and uninspiring season, Lisa Edelstein made the right call.

  11. Sally says:

I definitely miss Cuddy from House. The show has lost a spark without her around as a foil to House.

  12. Danny says:

Cuddy was one of the biggest losses of the television year. The show actually declined considerably after their release.

  13. Chip Ramsey says:

I, for one, will not miss Susan Lucci. There’s a reason that she was on AMC for so many years: She couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag with a machete. Thank goodness she’s unemployed.

  14. CJ says:

I only watch one of those shows now (I watched a couple of the others in the past), so I won’t miss any of them except maybe Michael Scott, and I didn’t mind letting him go. Not that he wasn’t funny, but the character had pretty much run its course.

  15. Kimm says:

I propose a new catchphrase. Instead of “jumped the shark”, how about “drove the car into the dining room”? Are you with me Cuddy fans!

    • Brit says:

My working catchphrase is “plowed the house.” And I am with you.

    • lipsticksocialism says:

    • Kath G says:

Err NO! dont miss her at all. And why all the crying STILL. LE walked nobody made her go.

      • spoilerchicka says:

Oh dear God, pay attention to the facts. You don’t cut the pay of the female lead who held so much of the fans support. Yet they did and expected her to re-up? What happened was tantamount to a “slap in the face?” It was wrong and intended to humiliate because of her personal politics that didn’t jibe with the network’s feelings about the Move on spot LE shot. The network cut off its nose to spite its face. Now the show is decending in the ratings steadily. Can’t blame that on the lead actress anymore…. just the writers, the network, the plots, the untalented new co-stars…etc.

        • KevyB says:

The thread isn’t ACTORS WE’LL MISS. It’s CHARACTERS WE’LL MISS. We are missing Cuddy as part of the ensemble! Why she walked has nothing to do with it.

  16. Aaron says:

With the passing of Elisabeth Sladen in the middle of filming, how can one not mention the loss of Sarah Jane Smith from “Doctor Who” and “The Sarah Jane Adventures”?

    • Bailey says:

Amen! She was such an iconic character in the canon, and I still can’t believe she’s gone. I wish TVLine covered Doctor Who more because there is so much to talk about.

      • Kate says:

Im happy they dont, i escape all the UK press because all they do is talk about Doctor who and Ive never understood my country’s fascination with it cuz i find it really bad, I come onto to the American sites to find out about my favorite TV!

  17. Jane says:

    Cuddy is missed on House.
I think the show suffered, just as it would have suffered if Wilson left. For me personally, the trio of House, Cuddy and Wilson made the show.

  18. Lori says:

    I miss Cuddy co much!!!

  19. Zora says:

I love House but I don’t miss Cuddy!

  20. Dani says:

Will defo miss Cuddy and Gus, but obviously for completely different reasons. :) The latter can probably withstand the loss though, whereas the former just can’t IMHO.

Michael Shannon’s contribution to Boardwalk as Jimmy was great too, but with a cast like that the slack will easily be picked up.

    • Simon Jester says:

Michael Pitt played Jimmy Darmody. Michael Shannon played Nelson Van Alden, who is still very much with us (and likely to be a player in Capone’s future plans in Cicero).

  21. Lucy says:

I miss Cuddy a lot. House is definitely not the same without her.
Same goes for Stabler and SVU.

  22. Cynthia says:

Awwwwww yeah I will miss the Sheriff Graham *sniff*

  23. Joan says:

My son and I already miss FNL! Kyle Chandler needs to come back to tv soon.

SVU isn’t the same without Stabler. I like the new cast members, but Olivia isn’t Olivia without Eliot.

  24. hello says:

Actually i am stll celebrating that Cuddy is gone

  25. Mac says:

He’s not on the list but I’ll mis Ned Stark, just a few episodie but he was one of the best. Winterfell never will be the same without him :'(

    Winter is coming…

  26. TigerNightmare says:

No Eddard Stark from Game of Thrones?

  27. Mark says:

So glad to see you included Erica Kane Daytime isn’t the same without her and the rest of Pine Valley’s citizens.

  28. D says:

I’ll miss coach Eric Taylor so much.
I’ll actually miss most of FNL’s characters, but Kyle Chandler’s portrayal of Taylor was amazing and inspiring, a great person.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.

  29. Slaghoople says:

    Nan Flanagan!

  30. Nadia says:

Am I the only one who’ll miss Smallville?

  31. Ann says:

I’m glad Cuddy left, I’m really enjoying House without her and the awful huddy nonsense. I hope she won’t be back

  32. cuius says:

Michael Imperioli as Det. Louis Fitch in Detroit 1-8-7

  33. F says:

Very glad Cuddy left and no more Huddy, ruined the show for me. But S8 is turning out to be a brilliant season, can’t wait for its return and crossing everything for a season 9!

  34. Erica Kane says:

    Thank you!

  35. kevin says:

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is still one of the best TV dramas I’ve ever seen and Kyle Chandler as Coach Taylor will definitely be missed and that Emmy victory is what he deserves.

  36. superboetti says:

I don’t miss Cuddy so much, but I think the writers made the wrong decision in making Foreman the dean of medicine, they should’ve kept him on the team!!

  37. House isn’t the same without Cuddy… she is the love of House…

  38. ber says:

I was never a crazy fan of Cuddy (I always preferred Cameron and Thirteen) but she was the last thing holding the show. After she left, I could not watch House any longer. I did not like what they did to her relatioship wih House but that does not mean that she did not play a central role in the show. House was bad last season (in my opinion, bar the Thirteen centered episodes in the late part of the season, but I realise that is a personal opinion), but this season is not even watchable, it has no spark, there is nothing to look forward every week. I am sorry for what happened, I am sorry that what once was such a good show had to get rid of the great Jennifer Morrison, of the great Lisa Edelstein and had to loose also the great Olivia Wilde. No further interest for me, as much as I like Jess Spencer and Hugh Laurie.

  39. zoot says:

    Friday Night Lights
the show was perfect..miss it so much
Kyle Chandler please get another show!

  40. JHarnes says:

    Jimmy Darmody, Boardwalk Empire

  41. Amanda says:

Where is the love for Ruben Santiago Hudson? As much as I love Captain Gates on Castle, I will always miss Montgomery :(

  42. Jack says:

I for one will toast the loss of Cuddy. Cuddy MD was a horror. Katie Jacobs made a big misstep focusing on Huddy. I liked Lisa Edelstein until season 7 but she was overexposed and doesn’t have the acting chops to carry the show. I never want to see the actress again.

  43. lipsticksocialism says:

Missing Cuddy and Stabler the most <3 <3 The cover story pic of Lisa Edelstein is fabulous! Keep sharing the Lisa E love, TvLine!

  44. Ralph says:

I know that they will have 2 weeks after the New Year, but EVERY long time character from One LIfe to Live. Viki, Dorian, all the Buchanans and Cramers. I will mourn those characters and friends always.

  45. Captain says:

We don’t have Connie Britton back on our screen. The entire AHS cast was killed off in the finale and Ryan Murphy already said Connie/Dylan wouldn’t be back (in main roles atleast).

  46. Veronica says:

I cannot BELIEVE that Captain Roy Montgomery from Castle is not there. Shame on you Ausiello, SHAME ON YOU!

  47. Loren C.E. says:

I miss Cuddy on House, and I want her come back to it! So many mistakes happened and the new season is bored….not a lot….but…. I wish good lucky to the both (House M.D and L.E.-She is a wonderful, biggest actress and deserves our love!)

  48. Gia says:

I cannot tell you how much I miss Cuddy. Every week on my Twitter or in some article people everywhere are saying the same-we miss Cuddy. Every.week.since.she.left. She was truly awesome in so many ways. Once again, TV Line, thanks for giving us fans a voice.

  49. ange says:

it is an important loss of Cuddy. they say the criticism of the media and fans through the audience.

  50. lis says:

    • ana says:

      ilove CUDDY so much!!!

    • @lis says:

Me too. What is that old saying? “Cast not your pearls before swine lest they trample them under foot then turn again and rend you.” Something like that. It will never cease to amaze me in life, no matter how many times I’ve witnessed it, when I see a truly good woman treated so shoddily, taken for granted and tossed aside so carelessly by men. Cuddy and Edelstein: both were epic women.

      • Jill says:

How do you know she was treated so shoddily as you say. She may of just got to big for her heels, and demanded too much, TPTB would not give into her and so she bailed. She was a secondary character on a TV show. The ONLY character the show can not do with out is House, with out him there is no show, all others are expendable. Cuddy was not the star of the show. The crying and whining over the fact that the fan fiction relationship did not work out, is pathetic. It was the plan that Cuddy would still be there in S8, to me LE is the only one responsible here. Besides the show is much better with out her IMO. But some are too wraped up in their Huddy grief to see that. This is an adult TV drama, not a Twilight tween thing.

        • spoilerchicka says:

Ask yourself, Jill, when you’re up for contract renewal howyou’d feel if your employer said, you’ve done great work and we really appreciate the wonderful ratings you’ve helped to create. To reward you for all that, we’d like to cut your pay by 25% AND cut your screen time. And you thought she just quit? She made it clear she would re-up her contract. Lisa E was taken for granted and low-balled. She called them on it and now they have crap ratings to show for it…oh and a lead character that is no longer recognizable from his original concept. Good luck with that. I’m sure a smart girl like you, Jill, would be thrilled to keep a job by taking a significant pay cut and be expected to smile about it. Remember, actors need to make a living, too. Accepting a pay cut would have career consequences for the rest of her life. LE was brilliant to walk away mainly because the timing was perfect. The plots have sucked this season. FWIW, some of us liked seeing a sharp woman over 40 look great, command an authoritative position and showcase a great sense of humor.

          • Draper says:

For one thing, I don’t think she’s been treated unfairly. She and RSL and OE,JS negotiated because they were the ones with a contract up this year. RSL and OE were willing to take less money or signed for less episode to see out the final season of the show – LE wasn’t. That’s her right. But I think it’s totally fair that NBCU should expect her to either take less money or have less screentime considering that her character’s prominence corresponded with the series’ worst ratings season (at this point, now not anymore). If bumping Cuddy up to co-star status had paid off in ratings – or even in critical acclaim or awards nominations – then she would have a strong negotiation position. But it didn’t. RSL and OE,JS don’t have that problem because their screentime either stayed the same or lessened.
My personal feeling is that it – if money was the motivator – it was a foolish decision not to spend one more year seeing out the end of the series. But that relates to my opinion that she’s not a great actress and that it’s unlikely she’ll get a bigger role than Cuddy. But her and her manager’s feelings on that obviously vary, and that’s all that matters.
BTW to the poster above: The only woman from House who was treated shoddily by the House-producers was Jennifer Morrison and not LE. I have no idea why LE Fans feel that way.

        • Sina says:

“This is an adult tv drama” LOL Actually the show has become a sitcom for pubescent teenage boys but thanks for the laugh!

      • D says:

No one was “tossed aside.” Edelstein quit. Don’t perpetuate nonsense.

        • KevyB says:

So you think people can’t be made to quit? Treating someone as if they aren’t worthy of your television show is little different than being “tossed aside”.

          • Draper says:

Lol,Ask the supporting actors of Bones or CSI or other network-dramas how they feel. They get the half of this what LE was offered. They would die to get the same money. Should they quit the job because they are less worth according to your opinion? Hm?!?
