Ratings: Giants-Cowboys Tackle Big Audience, Once Upon a Time Dips to New Low

NBC’s broadcast of the Giants-Cowboys game gave Sunday Night Football its second-largest overnight rating (16.1) of the season, and the franchise’s fifth-highest tally ever.

Final numbers are due in later today, but very preliminary indicators suggest that well over 20 million total viewers were tuned in during any given half hour.

Similarly, CBS’ own Sunday football coverage gave its primetime line-up a boost. Though the numbers are very rough due to some 40 minutes of NFL overrun, both The Amazing Race and The Good Wife are looking to be up by perhaps double digits, while CSI: Miami appears flat.

* The Once Upon a Time fall finale fell shy of 9 million total viewers while scoring a 2.9 rating, down 8 and 11 percent (setting a new demo low).

* On Fox, The Simpsons (6.5 mil/3.0) dropped sharply from last week’s football-boosted outing, but is up versus the week prior. The Cleveland Show‘s Die Hard homage (5 mil/2.3) dipped 8 percent. At 9 pm, Family Guy (6.1 mil/3.1) was down 15 percent, but American Dad (5 mil/2.5) was up 11 and 14 percent from its last outing.

I love ONCE UPON A TIME. It’s different. Yeah, not the best show in the world, but enjoyable and different. No more cops, doctors, soap operas….Just fantasy, fairy tales.
December is an awful month, with Xmas, big football matches…
Look another ABC ratings, everybody dropping (look Castle last week¡)

  2. Mika says:

Bummer about the weekly declines for Once Upon a Time. Revenge dropped last week too. I hope both my favorite new shows bounce back when they return.

    • ChrisGa says:

Yeah, I noticed alot of ABC’s shows dipped last week(you mentioned Revenge and I know Body of Proof did as well, rather significantly I think).

  3. kevin says:

The Giants-Cowboys game was one of the best SNF game I’ve seen in years and THE AMAZING RACE finale was remarkable and Ernie and Cindy truly deserve to be “amazing winners” but sadly Amani and Marcus gave it their all and a great way to make it ’til the very end.

    • CJ says:

Yesterday may have been the greatest overall day of pro football ever. Game after game had thrilling, unlikely endings, with incredible plays and multiple lead changes.

  4. Todd says:

Cleveland Show wasn’t a repeat. It was new. It was a parody of Die Hard.

  5. AT says:

Perhaps Once Upon a Time fell since they were advertising a death. Maybe some people weren’t excited to watch a favorite fairy tale character die.

  6. fotreya says:

ONCE UPON A TIME dropped because there was football match and Xmas, no more.
They have loyal audience, in january they will come back.

  7. Cy says:

Aww, sad to hear Once Upon a Time had such low ratings. I can’t imagine why the sudden dramatic dip–it was a pretty exciting episode, with Lana Parrilla showing us an even more amazingly evil (and exciting~) side of Regina. Loved this ep!

  8. Joe says:

Uh, once upon a time isn’t a soap opera?!

Clearly we haven’t been watching the same show with the whole prince charming and Willie be the wife or snow white thing going on.

Doesnt get more soap opera-ish than that.

That is not to say it isn’t a good show, but it certainly is soap opera.

    • fotreya says:

      Soap opera is General Hospital.
OUaT is a fantasy show with magic, romance, adventure…Yes, it has romance (beautiful romance with Snow and Prince), but not soap opera.

I hope without football we can get again our high ratings (I bet above 3.0 and 10m)

      • CJ says:

It’s serialized, melodramatic, and full of romance; Once Upon a Time is therefore a soap opera. It is also a fantasy.

        • Lint says:

You clearly have no clue what you’re talking about. OUaT is not a soap opera nor would any semi-intelligent person dismiss it as so simply because it’s full of romance and “melodrama,” – something that’s quite debatable.

      • Joe says:

        Dark Shadows

        Thank you and good night!

  9. Jake says:

I really hope the show bounces back up in january, its sad seeing my favorite new shows keep falling in ratings.

  10. diddly-doo says:

I know every episode of OUaT can’t be like this, but I REALLY like when they switch between fairy tale “storybook” and back to our reality of “Storybrook”. Lot’s of backstory and explanation of the who the characters were and why they are the way they are now.

The show kinda’ got bogged down with the snow/prince thing for a couple of weeks, but those who missed last night’s episode, with finally a confirmation that the mayor/queen DOES know what’s going on (and that she is pure EEEE-veeeyal!) will surely regret it.

    What a great episode!

  11. Ed says:

OUaT will bounce back no doubt. Once the holidays are over.

  12. Claire says:

The good wife was really good again this week after a mediocre beginning this fall.
OUAT was also great, I can’t wait to see the next !

Dexter has reached a new low in my opinion… I don’t know what happened with this show, it used to be amazing but this season : urgh, NOTHING makes up for anything…

  13. Jess says:

Really enjoyed Once last night! Normally i watch the Simpsons, and switch over to the 2nd half of Once and am satisfied with just the gist of the episode (really didn’t care for those filler episodes about cinderella and pinocchio), but because I knew last night would be an interesting episode, I watched the whole thing and loved it!!! Great storytelling, fast-paced and dramatic, if only every episode would be like this and we can move the main plot along!

  14. Arielle93 says:

Who cares about that stupid Disney crap OUAT?? GO FOOTBALL!!!!

    • Liz says:

Yes football is good and all, but there were still 3 whole quarters left after OUAT time was over and the best part of good football games are the last 2 minutes, so those of us who do watch OUAT aren’t missing very much of the game. And you have no freaking clue what you are missing by not watching OUAT. Also, OUAT isn’t disney, it’s fairytales much older than disney, but if it was, football players care about disney, why else would the Superbowl winners always say they’re going to Disney World?

  15. Dave M says:

Matt, how has HELL ON WHEELS been faring in the ratings? I’d imagine it’s not getting anywhere near the numbers of BREAKING BAD or WALKING DEAD, but is it in any kind of danger? Will it at least make it to the end of its season?

  16. Like most folks here, we think Once Upon a Time should bounce back when it returns in January.

Shame, though, considering how good the episode was. Interesting to see what happens now that the big first death has taken place.
