Happy Endings Exclusive: Michael McKean Cast as [Spoiler]'s Dad (And There's an Added Twist)!

Happy Endings is spinning a tale that could result in Dave and Penny being linked for life — as siblings!

Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that ABC’s sophomore comedy has tapped acting vet Michael McKean to play Dave’s dad.

And now for the ingenious twist: The Rose family patriarch will be accompanied by the new woman in his life… Penny’s mother, played by the returning Megan Mullally!

That is a pretty ingenious twist, yes? And the fact that the plot gives us the first-ever onscreen pairing of comic pros McKean and Mullally (save for an episode of Primetime Glick) is icing on the cake.

The episode is slated to go before the cameras next week and will air in early ’12.

  • For some reason this makes me want to start ‘shipping Penny and Dave, just for the awkward hilarity that would come out of it.

  • Before the show started, I remember reading somewhere that Penny’s character always had a secret crush on Dave but then I never dawe that reflected on the show!

  • (Pst… Ausiello, Dave’s last name is Rose.)

It’s Lenny! It took me a second to put the name to the face, great casting here. After reading the twist it kind of made me think of Gossip Girl (even though I don’t really watch it). As Penny’s ex BFF Derrick would say… DRAMA!!!!

  • Penny and Dave would be sooo cute together. It would provide all sorts of awkwardness for the group. It should happen.
