Glee Exclusive: Smallville Vet Cast as Sam's Dad!

Does this mean Sam’s brother is… Superman?!

Glee has tapped Smallville patriarch John Schneider to play the father of Chord Overstreet’s trouty mouthed crooner, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The gig reunites Schneider with Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy for the first time since they worked together on FX’s Nip/Tuck (where the Dukes of Hazard vet played porn impresario Ram Peters).

Schneider — who is booked for one episode at this point — make his Glee debut in this season’s eighth episode, which just so happens to be Overstreet’s first episode back as Sam.

Thoughts on the casting? Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Thumbs sideways?

  • I’d rather see Blaine’s homophobic dad than this waste of space and his storylines that nobody cares about. Quit bringing in peoples’ parents just for the heck of it if you don’t have a valid, meaningful reason for doing so.

  • Why does Sam even have to come back? Let alone bring a dad. Glee has way too many characters as it is.

  • I want Rachel’s dads to be Hugh Jackman and Taye Diggs! Then they can also have a song/dance. It will also bring Taye into the show with his wife Idina.

  • You people are so freaking picky! You will never be happy with the show if you can’t even like that Sam now has a dad. Get over it! If you don’t like how the show is going, then don’t watch it!

  • Rachel is a fully developed character who has had every season be about her. Like Mercedes said, nobody ever wants to hurt her feelings. Yes I agree Artie and Tina have been greatly overlooked and there needs to be more story detail for them and honestly I feel like we should focus more on other members of the glee club rather than Rachel. Yeah I know shes a great singer and one of the best singers in the group (Personally I like Mercedes and Kurt better…) but we honestly have to stop letting 99% of the limelight be just for her. Her having her fathers present wouldn’t enhance her character one bit.

    • Lea is the lead actress and they hires her and pay her more to be the lead. The others are supporting actors. BS about people not wanting to hurt Rachel’s feelings do you even watch? She is insulted all the times. When she is upset about not getting a song they don’t just give it to her. That is the biggest BS line this show has even spewed.

having her dad present might let us knw why she is the way she is…Why does she need it so much, why is she lonely, do they even really care or do they just give her what she wants and nothing else.

And BS that she get 99% of the limelight last.

  • I always liked Sam. One of my favorite characters and a great voice. I’m glad he’s finally back, and that we get to see more family. Do we NEED to see the dad? I doubt it but John Schneider is a great actor, and usually fun to watch. I’m excited. Now all we need is a real explanation for why Lauren is gone and I’ll be content.

  • I love the show, but it’s about a choir and everything they have to go through- including PARENT issues. As for the size of the cast, choirs are realistically ALOT bigger so sit down, shut up, enjoy the show or change the flippin channel!

  • Please cast Nathan Lane and Robin Williams as Rachel’s dads! They were fantastic together in Bird Cage! Oooh, and that guy that played Hagador, too!

    • Didn’t they also appear together briefly in an episode of Friends. They would be awesome as Rachel’s dad and I haven’t seen Robin Williams in a comedic role in what feels like forever, it would nice to see him do comedy again.

  • I like Sam – although he needs to have more screen time in order to be a more substantial character, so I am glad that they are bringing him back. And JS as his dad is good casting. As much as I love Klaine, I think Sam is a better choice for Kurt (taller to.) I hope that Sam and Kurt at least get to sing their duet together finally. I am not a fan of Rachel so her dads can stay off screen.

  • Actually, that was resident predatory gay, Sandy Ryerson, NOT one of Rachel’s dads. We only saw a glimpse of both of her dads in the pilot episode in one of those photo booth pic strips.

  • Did you guys ever consider the reason why Artie and Tina haven’t had very significant roles is because they’re Juniors along with Blaine and Sam that’s why Sam is coming back so the directors have something to build on next season not just throw in 12 new actors and Mr. Schuster.

  • If I remember correctly from season 1, Rachel has two gay dads (black & white) would be so nice to see them. And please don’t make them as flamboyant as Cory.

  • Oh my GOD, people, we do not need to see Rachel’s dads!!! Why does everything have to be about her to you people!? There are other characters and equally talented actors that deserve screen time too. This is Glee, not The Rachel Berry Show! We don’t need Sam’s family either, but we DEFINITELY don’t need Rachel’s dads as that will add absolutely nothing to her character at all. Just more of Rachel and her annoying screen hogging terrible personality and stupid facial expression. MOVE ON.

Comment by Eden – November 5, 2011 12:33 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Sam was written off the show. Rachel is the lead female. They lost their footing with this show when they started going away from their leads.

I think we could learn a lot about why Rahcle is so driven and why she is socially inapt by meeting her father and that would help her characterization a lot.

  • Ok seriously. We’ve seen Will’s parents, Emma’s parents, Mike Chang’s parents, SUE’s mom, Finn’s mom, Kurt’s dad, Quinn’s parents and who knows who else, I think we need to see some more glee family members. PLUS someone mentioned the Puck/Shelby kiss, does anyone else think that might be a ploy to pin her as an unfit mother for getting involved with a student?

  • Okay first off, Steven Tyler should be Sams dad because, HELLO HAVE YOU SEEN THEIR MOUTHS??!? Haha. Also, Why do so many people like Rachel?? I hate her guts. She never does anything for anyone, she is all about herself. I’d rather Quin be the main character instead of Rachel. My favorite characters are Fin, Kurt, and Artie.

Comment by Tyler B. – November 5, 2011 12:55 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I also hate Rachel’s guts. She is arguably the worst character on Glee. I don’t understand why people insist on defending her selfish, loudmouthed personality. If I actually knew a girl like that in real life I would probably punch her right in the schnoz.

  • I think it’s fair to introduce new characters because some of the students (Rachel, Kurt, Finn etc.) are graduating and if this is like a “high school musical” thingy they need new people. :) Sam is a junior I think

  • my two favorite shows come together.
people whining about us not meeting rachel’s parents: obviously we will meet them, and it does make sense that they’re taking so long to show us her parents, i mean, that’s what Ryan Murphy soes, he teases us ALL THE TIME, so be patient, and maybe by the 18th season we’ll meet her parents ;)

  • I was so glad to hear that Sam’s character is returning, and to now hear that his dad has been cast with an actor from one of my other favourite shows, I’m even happier.

At the end of the day, yes there are a lot of characters on the show, and to give them all equal time is obviously difficult. But people should remember that a lot of the cast that aren’t getting that much screen time this season are pretty much guaranteed to be coming back next season and most likely as lead characters at that (i.e. Tina, Mercedes, Artie, possibly Sam) because they’re juniors, whereas the ones that seem to be getting more of the screen time right now are likely to be leaving the show (or at least probably coming back in a much reduced capacity) next year after they graduate (unless they come up with far-fetched way of keeping everyone in the show despite graduating).

So yes, it is a good thing to be establishing more of Sam’s background. In all likelihood, his character may well be one of the leads next year, so it makes sense for us to know more about him. I’m sure they’ll be doing the same with the likes of Tina, Mercedes & Artie soon too even if characters like Tina and Artie just don’t seem to be doing anything right now. And let’s face it – drama with the characters’ families is the best kind of drama they can generate after relationship drama between the glee club members themselves. There are hardly any glee club pairings left to go through now!

So let’s enjoy the show for what it is and trust that the writers have taken on board people’s opinions about the last couple of seasons. Clearly they are listening given how different the feel of the last few episodes has been!
