Glee Exclusive: Smallville Vet Cast as Sam's Dad!

Does this mean Sam’s brother is… Superman?!

Glee has tapped Smallville patriarch John Schneider to play the father of Chord Overstreet’s trouty mouthed crooner, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The gig reunites Schneider with Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy for the first time since they worked together on FX’s Nip/Tuck (where the Dukes of Hazard vet played porn impresario Ram Peters).

Schneider — who is booked for one episode at this point — make his Glee debut in this season’s eighth episode, which just so happens to be Overstreet’s first episode back as Sam.

Thoughts on the casting? Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Thumbs sideways?

jso i guess we’re going to meet every one of the kid’s parents instead of one of Rachel’s dads. the girl can’t get a parental figure to save her life. her mom’s too busy scamming on puck to even talk to her!!!

    • Kim says:

Really their lead character and no parents to speak of, such a waste opportunity.

      • Shiloh says:

That could be cool, to see Rachel’s dads.

        • mmmmmmmmike says:

one of rachel’s dad was actually in one of the episodes from season one when she made that music video with puc, finn, and jesse. Her dad was the guy with the shot gun and shot all three boys. don’t remember the name of the song or episode number.

other than that i do not recall any other episode of rachels’ dads. If they bring her dads into the show, i would like to see no contradicting actors with that one episode aforementioned

          • Jimmy says:

The song was ‘Run Joey Run’ and was the song played before the ending song of ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ :)

          • Anabritasplen says:

Actually her “dad” in the run Joey run video was sandy ryerson

          • Nooooo… that was Sandy Riderson aka The Drug Lady aka The first Glee Club teacher.

Also the video was “Run Joey Run”.

Rachel’s Dads have ONLY been shown in a photo once, I think it was one of the times Jesse came over.

          • Kat says:

That wasn’t her actual dad. That was the old Glee teacher, Sandy Ryerson. >_>

          • Eden says:

@BlackBirdSigh the photo of Rachel’s dads was only shown in the very first episode of Glee, the Pilot episode.

          • Laura says:

Rachels dads were seen in the pilot in a picture in her locker, and i think that’s the only time they’ve shown them.

          • Terri-Dawn says:

That wasn’t Rachels dad. That was that Sandy guy. You see a picture of her dad in her locker in season one, but other than that there has never been an appearance from her dads.

          • bytheseatofmypants says:

It was the pilot when she looks at her dads in a picture in her locker. She talks about how a surrogate was chosen and using a mixture to make a baby then not knowing which one of her dads was her real father. One was caucasian and seemed Jewish and the other an AfroAmerican youner man. It was in a voice over as she talks about how her dads gave her everything to be great dancing and singing lessons. I just don’t think they will humanize Rachel anymore with bringing in real people to play her dads thusly, making her more lonely and on her own with no interactment except her relationships with Finn and the Glee club. I feel this is what we are to experience with Rachel’s surroundings and to never really visualize her dads pleasure or discontent with her. We are to assume there is total autonomy causing Rachel to be whom she is practically raising herself alone. Thusly, we finally come to see why Rachel was and has been the way she was. My opinion only.

        • tyrone says:

I would love to meet Rachels two dads

        • jacquie quaid says:

major glee fan love to see rachels dads want to no when its ing back on tv again for england what channell and what time please do not want to miss an episode at all please relpy and i will love u for ever more

    • A says:

We’ll probably never see Rachel’s dads unless they stunt cast for graduation or something. I think RM said he wanted them to exist offscreen.

      • why says:

but he isn’t even doing that. If they made more references to them and made them a Maris or a Vera that would be fun. They have been mentioned only a few times.

    • Joe says:

      We want Rachel’s dads!!!!! We want Rachel’s dads!!!!! We want Rachel’s dads!!!!! We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!We want Rachel’s dads!!!!!

      • Charlie Brown says:

        Get a life looser!

      • Carmichael says:

Forgive me if I’m wrong, my memory’s not what it used to be, but didn’t we at least SEE a picture of her dads in the pilot? Granted I know it’s not the same thing. And, I’d like to point out we never saw Maris Crane or Vera Peterson for instance. Some characters work fine offscreen. Like Sam should still be.

        • worng says:

But Maris and Vera were referenced enough to make it seem like Characters. Rachel’s dads have been mention 5 times tops. So they do not fit in that off screen great character mode.

      • kat says:

I don’t. They can never match the perfection of the pictures. If they could get those guys, i’d be for it, but they can’t so for the sake of continuity, I DON’T want them back.

      • Nikki says:

they showed a picture of them in one of the first episodes.

        • sarah says:

The pics of her dads were in the first showing on glee it was in her locker right before the sign up for glee… :) Im a gleek I KNOW!

      • ABC says:

They won’t show Rachel’s parents, because at the first eposide (The Pilot) , they showed a photo of Rachel’s parents and those guys aren’t even actors.
That’s what Ryan said on a video (but i can’t find it now)

        • please says:

BS excuse all they need to be is a black guy and a jewish guy and people will accapet that. Come on people suspend belief with this show all the time. they would get over her dads not looking exactly like the picture.

    • Eden says:

Oh I know, POOR RACHEL, she never gets any storylines or songs or anything, poor poor girl, she’s always getting shafted, amirite? Omg the entitlement of Rachel, I can’t with you guys. You get EVERYTHING but it’s never enough.

      • Eden knows jack says:

No one said she didn’t get songs or storyline, but they did introduce that father and than nothing. It makes more sense to have her family than a character they wrote off.

And really season two she never had a main l storyline and this year she has sung less.

    • Summer says:

To be fair, we’ve met her biological mother, so it isn’t as though she’s lacking in the parental department.

      • gr says:

Have you been watching? Rachel and Shelby have had like 5 scenes in 3 seasons. And she is not a parent to her.

So not not fair at all she had nothing to do with Rachel’s home life or her up bringing.

    • abbie says:

      we have met rachel’s parents!

    • Jeanine says:

Where has Chord (aka Sam) been? Anyone know? Was he making a CD, too (like Puck did a while ago)? Thought he was off the show.

  2. kali says:

it’s ridiculous that a boring character (played by one of weakest actors) will have their family shown before the star of the show does

    • Claudia says:

He played several dads before. It’s so awkward.
      90210: Liam’s
      Secret Life: Amy’s
However, Sam is by far, the most interesting guy on the show… even better than Blaine or Kurt. Yes fangirls, I said Blaine or Kurt!

    • Brenda says:

      Are you freaking kidding me?

    • Nan says:

People, chill out already! There may be underlying reasons we know nothing about as to why we get to meet Sam’s dad right now. And I think John Schneider is a great choice. They look like they’re from the same gene pool. I just want to know when Samuel from ‘The Glee Project’ is going to be on. He was and is my favorite from that show & was ripped off when they decided to share the prize with Damian. I hated the way he was almost always smiling in last week’s episode.

      • bytheseatofmypants says:

I think John Schneider is a wonderful choice and he sings wonderfully too. Still good looking a long time since the General Lee.

  3. ErixN says:

Very cool! John’s hair is growing out!

  4. paul says:

I love Chord but I don’t understand why they’re adding more to his boring character on glee. The cast is already bloated with all those reality show rejects in the mix. Thumbs down.

    • Puckleberry says:

I am with you Paul. Thumbs down. Glee’s overpopulated already. And I don’t see why Sam’s father is relevant or interesting. Instead of bringing all these new (and totally unnecessary and uninteresting) characters, they should focus on the EXISTING ones like Tina (who hasan’t had a real storyline) or Artie (who’s been overlooked again and again, being cast as the musical co-director was just small potatoes). No more irrelevant characters, please!

    • Brenda says:

Ok, listen: a show needs to grow, it can’t never be the same ALL the seasons and have the SAME cast or plots. Srsly, otherwise it becames boring and uninteresting.

Some people need to understand this.

  5. samrenee2010 says:

  6. dave says:

That’s actually a very good choice. Any word on Brittany’s mom? That was mentioned ages ago but still no casting news.

  7. A says:

Hmm, pretty big name casting. I wonder why we’re meeting Sam’s parents?

  8. O says:

    YES! I love John Schneider!!!

  9. andrea says:

    THUMBS UP! :)

  10. Casey says:

YAY! So happy about this! When I saw the tweet, I guessed that it would be about John Schneider. They kinda look alike, and he’s amazing, so this is definitely wonderful casting. I’m way too excited about this, I know, but I love him. I have ever since Smallville, and I can’t wait to see him on Glee. (Here’s hoping he sings, but I don’t see it happening.) <3

  11. k says:

Where are Rachel dads. dumb show….

  12. Mil says:

Thumps up definitely. I’m so happy that Sam is back, he is just one of the most sweetest and selfless character and the show, and Chord plays him so well. I’m excited on what it’s store for Sam :D

  13. ggny says:

i like the casting and i like trouty mouth but there is no point bringing him back the show already has way to many characters i mean hell original character Tina and Artie barely get any screen time anymore…why not focus on them instead of bringing back a filler character that did nothing for the show last year

    • Brenda says:

Can you please reconsidered what are you saying? Like, just because Sam is back Tina and Artie won’t get enough screentime/plots? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? If you wanna blame something blame the ridiculous Sue’s storyline, the extremly amount of time they wasted presenting another school/glee club, etc. Don’t blame Sam who happens to have some connection with this two characters and the other characters who doesn’t get propper storylines.

    • Nan says:

I agree that Tina & Artie don’t get enough screen time. But what’s up with so much screen time for Brittany & Santana. I liked it better when they were merely in the background. I still say either one or both are someone’s niece/daughter/granddaughter. Yes, they are talented, but it’s beginning to look like ‘The Brittany & Santana Show’ lately. And I always love it when Will sings & he hasn’t done much lately either.

  14. Maira says:

I agree if there is to be any more parents it should be Rachel’s. Why did they even introduce them in the pilot as a interesting could and than nothing.

Shows how weak the writers are….

  15. Grace says:

Why are they giving a mediocre singer/actor parents when Rachel freakin’ Berry hasn’t had her parents shown yet?

  16. kate says:

Perhaps we’ll get some singing from Schneider. He does have a background in music. That’d be cool.

What’s funny is that this story references him from “Smallville.” Seriously, John Schneider is know for one thing universally: “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

    • liz says:

Did you not see any of the first 5 seasons of Smallville or the series finale with the Always hold on to Smallville line that was so popular for fans of the show. Fans of Smallville know exactly who he is and there probably a lot of younger adults out there that know him as Jonathan Kent instead of Bo Duke.

      • @liz says:

IA. I doubt many people here would know him from Dukes more than from Smallville. Better to ref. his most recent work.

  17. allie says:

::standing ovation to Glee casting people::

  18. Shan says:

Sorry, but we’ve already scene Rachel’s dads’s? Season one, episode one? Why would we need them to actually be there? What on Earth would they contribute to Rachel as character?

    • please says:

We never saw them we saw a picture and it might actually give us some insight on Rachel why she is the way she is.

Why do we need Sam parent he is now just a reoccurring cast person not even a regular.

How about how Rachel is dealing with her crazy bio mom or them helping with the election that is against the art or her dealing with getting into school.

  19. Annie says:

Sam wasn’t there the first season..SO much for going back to basics. I am so tired of all these secondary characters getting family and we have nothing for Rachel. Shelby doens’t count she had nothing to do with her up bringing plus they aren’t even doing anything with that .

  20. Frederica says:

For all of you demanding Rachel’s parents: Enough with the parents! Enough.

I want more singing and storylines from the characters we already care about.

Enough with the parents, the “Glee Project” stars, the special guests. Let’s get back to what made “Glee” so good to start with: Great interaction among a group of young, conflicted kids and their teachers.

  21. Alyssa James says:

Just on the casting news alone, that’s great news. Good casting and always good to see John Schneider on tv.

  22. Janet says:

So exciting! Will he be singing? Please say yes – he has a beautiful voice

  23. Kathy says:

I agree if we are showing families I would rather see Rachel or Artie than a reoccurring cast person.

How about back to basic be the original glee club members.

  24. Jake says:

YAY! great news! and so what we havent met alot of the kids parents. We will probably never meet Rachels dads and the only characters that
we’ve seen parents from are: Finn, Kurt, Quinn, Mike, and Puck (we saw his mom for like a second so that might not count).

  25. wilma says:

stop wasting time on insignificant characters.

How about Rachel, Tina, Mercedes and Artie’s families.

  26. wally says:

Good casting for Sam’s dad but unnecessary. I like Chord enough but the show doesn’t need him or his parents.

  27. Louise says:

    Thumbs up!

    They did this perfectly…

  28. Colleen says:

Hope we get to see John Schneider and Cord sing together!

  29. Snsetblaze says:

Good casting for Sam’s dad. And he can sing too. I met John Schneider last year at a convention. He was one of my crushes during my teen years. He has aged very well and even looks younger in person and he’s either nearing or over 60 at this point. He also looks smaller (thinner) in person although he is 6’5. He was very warm to my husband and I. (Yes I know it was probably acting but had a warm handshake.)

  30. Zach says:

Leroy and Hiram Berry so sad, so much potential and nothing.

  31. Harmony says:

He looks too old to have little kids. Sam has tiny siblings, and John Schneider could be their grandpa. But maybe he’ll do a good job.

  32. taylor_w says:

Excellent casting!! Big name actor for Sam’s dad. This bodes well for Chord Overstreet’s upcoming storylines on Glee this season. If they brought back Chord to be second fiddle and swaying in the background, I don’t think Ryan Murphy would bother finding a famous actor to be his dad.

Hopefully John Schneider gets to guest sing with Chord.

  33. Leah says:

Meh Sam’s dad really. How about no parents and focus on the core kids.

  34. David says:

This is a great choice!! I can’t wait for episode 8!!

  35. Thomas says:

I’m just really glad Sam is back. I think I’m glad. I’m sure RIB will make me regret that feeling.

  36. Donnie says:

Wasting screen time on a character that got rid or..why???

I’d rather see anyone else parents to be honest.

  37. AndyLuvr says:

I’m a huge “Smallville” and John Schneider fan but I don’t understand why Chord Overstreet is coming back to “Glee” let alone why the audience will get to see his father when Sam is such a bottom tier character. I’d prefer to see the parents of the original club members: the Cohen-Changs, the Berrys, the Joneses and the Abramses over the Evanses.

  38. Issy says:

This is so exciting! It’s nice to see some recognition for Sam.
He is probably one of the deepest, most developed characters on this show.
It would be sad to see so much potential put to waste.

  39. Taylor says:

I’m definitely excited to see Sam’s parents! If Sam is transferring back, I think it makes sense that we’d see his parents, and this actor seems like a good choice. I’m just so happy Sam’s back. He’s one of my top 3 favorite characters.

  40. Susana says:

This is really great, I can’t wait to meet the Evans :)

  41. Carla says:

If there aren’t twelve members there is no competition and if there is no competition then there is no Glee Club.

I think some of you are forgetting that the core four can’t carry a show on their own. For this show to continue to work they NEED a rotation of twelve or more members. As of episode four they don’t have that, and from the spoilers I’ve heard they won’t have that until Sam comes back.

His parents will most likely be around long enough to sign him back into McKinley then disappear forever. I don’t see what the big deal is.

    • Carla says:

And the whining about Rachel getting more than she already does is just plain ridiculous at this point. As I said above Rachel/Lea cannot carry the show alone no matter how much you think she can.

      • please rewatch and pay attention says:

Please he isn’t even a regular character, they said they were going back to basics and that should mean the core characters.

And Rachel hasn’t had a decent storyline of her own since season one she is with Finn or she is rival to Mecredes or Kurt’s friend.

    • Brenda says:

Exactly. Sometimes I think the fandom is just freaking psycho. They take things waaay too srsly.

  42. Gerry says:

This is SUPER dumb is what it is. Love John Schneider but Chord Overstreet is useless as is his character Sam. The show put Sam in so many stories last year and none of them clicked. Clearly the show does and can go on without Sam. No need to bring him back at all.

    • Brenda says:

No need to call this “super dumb” too. If you don’t like it, fine. Just don’t go around offensing other people’s opinions, thank you.

      • Eden says:

“offensing other people’s opinions”? Gerry is just sharing his/her opinion. Not everybody is going to like something, and the people who don’t like it are just as entitled to share what they think as the people that do.

  43. Britt says:

Really excited for this! The show needs to put the spotlight on characters that we don’t know as much about. There’s plenty of Rachel characterization already, it’s pretty laughable to act like anyone else getting parental development is taking away from her character.

  44. JDHetherington says:

Wow. Again with the parent complaints. We’ve seen Rachel’s mom, Finn’s mom, Kurt’s dad, Quinn’s mom and dad, Mike’s mom and dad, Puck’s mom, plus we’ve mentioned Rachel’s dads regularly, and there has been talk of seeing Rory’s mom, Brittany’s mom, and Santana’s parents. This is a high school set comedy. You all just spent a large amount of time complaining about how introducing Sam’s parents will limit attention on the core cast, yet all you seem to want is Rachel’s dads…… It’s illogical. It doesn’t make sense.

    • what don'y you get says:

Shelby is a stranger to Rachel she is not her mom and they aren’t even doing anything with that story. She give us no insight on Rachel home life or anything at this point.

People want Rachel’s dads becasue they have been teased and Rachel is an actual regular cast member and the lead at that.

  45. courtney says:

I am so thrilled by this news! That is great casting and it sounds like Chord/Sam is finally going to get a meaty storyline if we are meeting his parents. Get us some spoilers please! I’ve only seen one episode this season because I’m not interested in watching The Blaine Show, but I’ll definitely be tuning in for episode 8.

  46. Shiloh says:

NGL, I’m glad Chord Overstreet’s coming back. Liked his character and he had a great voice. :)

  47. fiona says:

enough with everyone complaining that rachel’s two gay dads not showing. They probably wont so that the chatter can keep up. Anyway how is showing rachel’s parents help her character? They absolutely support their daughter they love her.

Its purely fan wants. Whereas the parents that appear greatly affect their childrens current upbringings.

Finn’s: Living with a single mother and the relationship btwn the two overcoming how she dates and eventually marries Kurt’s dad

Kurt: Struggling with his homosexuality, Burt is his rock, accepting him fully.

Quinn’s parents: pregnant daughter storyline with a strict unaccepting father and a mother who sits quietly until she finally breaks free from her husbands control.

Mikes parents: how he overcomes the obstacles his dad put in front of him so he could pursue what he wants breaking the racial stereotype

Emma’s parents: shows how she became the way she was, creating her OCD issues

Sam’s dad: His father lost his job and was the very reason Sam had to leave the state

    • george says:

How do they support her all we know is the few things she has said. Where are they with Shelby around or her getting into school or the campaigne to rid the school of art education. They have been many time to introduce them.

Sam was written off we don’t need him or his folks.

  48. Sara Beth says:

Guys, the show is called GLEE! Not The Rachel Berry Show.
Rachel’s a good character, and she gets a lot to do. And she has at least one song just about every episode. There are other characters too who are just as good as Rachel. Please, get off your soapboxes, stop complaining, and enjoy the show.

    • dean says:

She gets that becasue she is the lead and once again reason we should know her home life and her upbringing.

Why introduce them and then never show them.

Get off you soap box about telling people what they can and cannot discuss.

    • BJohnson says:

Yeah I figured it was at the beginning kind of the characters you never saw like Vera from Cheers or Maris from Frasier. She mentions them, but you never see them. I thought they were waiting to cast them later. Now Sam gets a dad? Guess we’ll see Santana’s people before we get to Rachel’s folks.

  49. Kim says:

He was hot in “Dukes of Hazard” back in the day…

I just wonder where Sam got that Trouty Mouth.
