Breaking: Charlie's Angels Canceled By ABC

Get More: Cancellations, News

Sorry, Charlie, but this week’s tiny uptick in ratings simply wasn’t enough to keep your Angels aloft.

ABC has shut down production on its reboot of Charlie’s Angels effective immediately, in the wake of a full month of meager ratings. The detective drama become this fall’s fifth casualty after NBC’s The Playboy Club and Free Agents, CBS” How to Be a Gentleman (which ceased production after being shuttled to Saturdays), and The CW’s H8R.

Already-produced Angels episodes will continue to air in the Thursdays-at-8 slot, at least up to and perhaps beyond scheduled end-of-month holiday preemptions (such as when another Charlie, Brown, fills the slot).

In its Sept. 23 debut, Angels attracted 8.7 million viewers while scoring a 2.1 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demo. At last tally, the show drew 5.9 mil and a 1.3, down 32 and 38 percent, respectively.

  • Just don’t cancel Pan Am. Now that’s a great show.

  • Oh well, Minka back to Parenthood and Rachael back to Grey’s.

  • What a bloody season! Half the nights there is nothing to watch on tv. The counter programing is killing these networks.

  • I watch Hawaii 5-0 and love it. This new Charlie’s Angels, I have watched but cannot get into it. After last nights sub par episode I figured I would not watch it again. Not surprised it was cancelled. Dallas reboot? Can’t wait, not really a reboot as it is the next generation. Izzie back on Grey’s? For how long, till Katherine gets offered another movie? Pass on Izzie!

  • Against the Wall is a good show, hope more people give it a chance. However, I will not miss Charlie’s Angels…

  • Having seen the original I wanted to like this show. But I didn’t. Everything seemed so forced and fake just like the movies that were really bad. Watching the original I remember doing an eyeroll at things, Girls in Chains anyone, but it was mindless fun and viewers and actors knew it but you still cared/connected to the charactes. This was just cringe worthy. Maybe not enough time has passed from the original and the reboot. I won’t be watching the rest of them but for the fans that liked this show at least they got that as opposed to other shows that just drop off the face of the earth.

  • Minka Kelly, come back to Parenthood?

  • Hahaha about time, horrible script. So bad. I saw only a few minutes and that was it, that was truly all I could stomach. My roommate and I were rolling on the floor laughing at the unbearably cheesy one liners. I’m having a really hard time trying to understand how the cast and crew attached to this project actually thought it was promising material. Everything about it was ugh.

  • Hated the idea of a remake but gave it a shot anyway. I didn’t like it at all. It felt like it was taking itself too seriously and the writing was terrible.

  • I understand cancelling CA, it was dreck. But it still pulled more viewers overall and roughly the same demos as the terminally unfunny Community and Parks and Rec. In addition, those shows have had several years to build an audience. i iimagine most viewers who might have any interest have sampled and rejected them. What keeps those two pieces of crap floating? I was a big fan of Amy P on SNL, and also of Joel McCrae, but after giving both shows multiple viewings, I’m still looking for a real laugh. Don’t get me wrong, I love Modern Family, Big Bang, HIMYM, 30 Rock, etc. And have loved comedies back to Seinfeld. But I kinda like my comedies to actually be funny, which eliminates both of those shows. Their ratings will never improve, so why do they stay on the air?

  • Couldn’t agree more, really can’t believe Happy Endings wasn’t picked up for a full season !! Do us all a favor and pick it up for more than a full season , it’s probably one of the funniest shows on TV, well right after Big Bang Theory of course ;) …. BTW Two And A Half Men is DONE !! It’s just not good at all, it really feels as if Allen (John) is being forced onto the show as a new chararcter, it just doesn’t work !!

  • Didn’t watch this show and don’t really care. I got to say those who are sad about this show being cancelled, should watch NIKITA. NIKITA is a very good show and the writing and acting is phenomenal.

  • I enjoyed this series. The actors all did a fabulous job with what they were given in scripts. Looked forward to thursday nights because I could sit back and travel with these fantastic actors and get into the mystery as well as the action. ABC has been making a lot of mistakes and this is one really big one. I hope they rethink this because Charlies Angels was and is a great show. I understand it even drew more to this last thursday nights viewing. What is wrong with giving a new show a chance? I Will miss Charlies Angels a lot.

  • It’s hard to recreate a show from the past to new version of itself. Clearly it wasn’t good enough to develop into a show that audiences wanted to see another version of this classic show. “Charlie Angels” is and will be an classic. But with that it’s hard to create a show that was just a hit soon as it was premiered on “ABC” network. So it’s not a shock that even if it failed that at least they tired. But it wasn’t enough to keep it going to see what it would’ve been as a hit show.

  • I know I am in the minority here, but I am honestly very sad. I watched the movies as a little girl and then in May, when I learned they were remaking the show, I went back and watched the original series. It was very good and I loved it, just like the movies. From the first minute of the remake, I have been hooked! Everyone, viewers and critics alike, have been slamming the show. They complain that it had horrible acting, directing, lighting, casting and writing. No one gave the show a chance, including ABC! Has anyone watched television lately? Nothing does well at first, it takes time to build a fan base! ABC gave Charlie’s Angels four weeks to build one! It’s also not right how Pan Am lost five million viewers since it’s premiere and yet Charlie’s Angels who have only lost about three has been cancelled. Double standard? I think so. ABC must really be trying to ruin their network. First they cancel two soaps, and now this? Alfred Gough and Miles Millar created everything that a remake should have. They kept it in tune with the original, but also added their own spin on things by making Bosley younger and moving the show to Miami. Drew Barrymore was an executive producer. The show did everything right, it just wasn’t given a chance to succeed. ABC you have lost a viewer from your stupidity. Pretty soon, you will have no one left.

Comment by Taylor – October 15, 2011 09:58 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Bosley should have been an older man, it allows the characters to get into multi generational scams. The 3 new Angels were not exquisite like the original 4 were. Robert Wagner pulled out as being the voice of Charlie because of “scheduling conflicts”, and he owns a percentage of Charlie’s Angels! (We all know that at this point in time, Mr Wagner’s career is not so busy that he couldn’t go into a recording studio for a half hour or so every week, so that was a BAD sign…) As for the producers, Al Gough is my cousin and I think most of his work is brilliant, but even as a devoted fan and relative of his, I just thought this was gonna be bad from its inception. And I think I was right.

  • well, hopefully, we’ll have another go at it in the future. with better characters (reformed criminals? girls with shady pasts?? booooring!) and better casting (that gloria reuben look-alike derailed this reboot; were they aiming for a “missing” revival instead???). get kate jackson on board, as a charlie boss-figure this time, and tap jaclyn, cheryl and shelley hack, too. but please! leave tanya roberts in the soft-porn heaven where she is comfortably nestled. i’m almost pretty sure whoever was responsible for casting the lame tanya in the original also had a hand in the casting of this reboot. the girls dont sizzle, they fizzled out!

Comment by jay – October 17, 2011 12:46 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Yes, Charlies Angels did have a sequel but as JJ pointed out, it did not have a “second” sequel. A tv series (skip a generation) and then two movies doesn’t really qualify as a franchise.

  • Charlies Angles should have been given a chance. Some shows have low ratings. but later by surprize they pick up. Change the day or time At least see how it does. I like the character and cast. It.s Nice to see police story or detectives. We need some westerns too.

  • I loved the show, I thought the girls were hot!!! Especially, Annie. Its about time we saw a show w/o an all white cast. Yes the script sucked and some of the acting wasn’t full on or completely up to par, but I thought the show had potential. Heck I could say the same thing about the new Hawaii 5.0 show when it first started, the script was crap, the only thing it had going for it was the Hawaii location. But look at them now? They got better writers and the show is now hot!

The thing I especially loved about the Angels was the fact that they weren’t cursing all over the place and they didn’t have rude, obnoxious attitudes, they were ladies with class. I would love to see them in a well written action packed show soon.

  • I really liked this show. yeah it wasn’t as much of a hit as the original nothing ever is. lets just admit that now, but it was good. i think the problem is that back when the original came out female heroins were new and fun so everyone loved all of them, and now there are female heroins everywhere. so i think the network was shooting too high and was disappointed. they need to find something new!

  • First The Playboy Club now Charlie’s Angels?? I hear Bones’ ratings are WAAY down, too, because of the whole pregnancy thing. I guess some fans are ticked with the way the conception went down so they’re “striking” by not watching Bones. Which is stupid because it can just be cancelled. Whatever happens, Castle better not be cancelled. They have their best ratings ever but with this fall schedule being so unstable WHO KNOWS?? Well, I can’t live without my Castle fix. Charlie’s wasn’t that great so I’ll live.

Comment by Elizabeth – December 7, 2011 12:06 AM PDT  Reply To This Post

  • Elizabeth, you’re lucky. With all the heroines out there kicking ass and all, you’re lucky Castle started when it did. Now, on Castle, Beckett would just be overkill. Which was the Angles problem. They were overkill!

  • I liked this show. It wasn’t the original but it was something i could watch with my girls. It was way better than watching shows that belittle people or cartoons that are not cartoons but for adults and kids stop the channel to watch and then realize “mom what does this mean….” Those are the shows that should be cancelled! But society truley prefers this crap.

I actually liked this show, it was just on a B network in my area. Had it been on Fox, CBS, or maybe even NBC – It would surely have seen another season. Boo to the execs who canceled it.

  • ABC is like a guy who really can’t stay truthful to a woman. Everytime i find a cool tv show the NBC cancel it. And why not give some of the series a chance to give out a last episode just to finish it of nicely. In my opinion the only show that really finished of with a good ending episode is Charmed, the rest of them just shuts down with a question to ask what happened now.

  • Hi I think that you should try putting Charlie’s Angels back on just 2 or 3 nights and have advertisements on ABC like in the morning when the do you know anyway to see if maybe it could keep it going because I have gotten the recordings off of iTunes and now I love it and so does my uncle and you’d have so many happy fans. I really don’t think you will actually read this since it was about 2 years ago but if you are I think the show is awesome. Could you just try to experiment a little. If not just wanted to tell you I think it was a great show!
