Michael Douglas and Matt Damon Set For HBO's Liberace Pic Behind the Candelabra

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are headed to the small screen in an Emmy-bating HBO telepic that chronicles the tempestuous relationship between Liberace and his longtime companion Scott Thorson.

Oscar winner Douglas will play the legendary entertainer in the Steven Soderbergh-directed (and Jerry Weintraub-exec produced) Behind the Candelabra, while Damon will portray Thorson.

“From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it,” said Soderbergh. “HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us. Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.”

HBO Films prez Len Amato predicts that Candelabra — which begins production next summer — is “going to surprise a lot of people,” adding that the story is “funny, heartbreaking and… fascinating.”

Is there anyone who doesn’t find bald Matt Damon so much more awesome than Matt Damon with hair?

  2. Mark says:

Can’t wait !! Love me some Matt Damon !!
Both men are VERY brave to take this project on –
Best of luck to BOTH of them !!

    • davey says:

Brave? Why would they be BRAVE to make a movie about Liberace? What an odd comment?!?

      • John says:

Yeah, no kidding. Liberace was gold. To this very day, for anyone who can stop fidgeting long enough to enjoy listening to some music from a time when it was actually played, they might notice how remarkably astonishing Liberace’s music is. He was outstanding. But will Michael Douglas be able to convey his signature mannerisms? We’ll see soon enough.

It’s too bad that nobody has yet to picture Liberace as a big screen contender. He was a very interesting talent.

  3. amanda says:

Matt Damon also has an Oscar, just sayin.

  4. cc says:

The Birdcage 2. Just Kidding. Seriously, is this a TV movie?

  5. Templar says:

Dreadful casting for the Liberace role. Alfred Molina, possibly Stanley Tucci. Definitely NOT Michael Douglas.
