Criminal Minds Duo Shoot Down Hotch/Prentiss Romance Buzz: 'It's a Hard Line to Ride'

Write about CBS’ Criminal Minds (airing Wednesdays at 9/8c) — any story about it, really — and a small sect of fans is sure to surface throwing their weight behind a someday romance between BAU agents Hotch (played by Thomas Gibson) and Prentiss (Paget Brewster).

“They have good chemistry and look great together, and she could bring out a less serious side to him,” one TVLine reader recently commented. “I want to see my Hotch have some fun.”

Another reader chimed in, “The writers could get a lot of creative, intriguing material from a Hotch/Prentiss coupling,” while a third was a bit more extreme with her investment in the would-be coupling, declaring, “If the writers don’t put Hotch and Prentiss together in Season 7 it will be a travesty. They deserve to be together.”

Perhaps more than ever, given how Hotch was one of only two people entrusted with the secret of Emily’s faked death.

Casting News: Criminal Minds Eyes Heroes Favorite

Yet at least two factors might keep the Criminal Minds coworkers from ever broaching a workplace romance. For one, Hotch’s ex-wife was killed by a serial killer not two calendar years ago. There’s also the matter of while it’s one thing to have a lunch date with Lenny, the guy who drives the delivery van at your flower shop, it’s another to mix pleasure with a business that is so not conducive to canoodling.

“I’ve read [about some fans’ want for a romance] and I don’t know how to respond to it,” Paget Brewster recently shared with TVLine. “I understand it on the one hand, because in the real FBI, people work so closely and are only around each other, so chances are that sooner or later they date each other. In some ways, it’s human nature.”

But on the other hand — and this is a valid point — “The idea that Hotch and I might be fooling around in a roundtable room when children are dying somewhere is really not appealing,” Brewster notes. “It’s a really hard line to ride, so I don’t know if they’ll ever write that. I really don’t.”

Criminal Minds Season 7 Gets Personal, Bringing Back JJ’s Baby Daddy and More

Thomas Gibson was similarly bearish on the idea when we ran it by him moments later, responding, “No, no, no…. Not unless it was one of those drunken evenings between Hotch and Prentiss.” (Yeah, one of those evenings. As if!)

Besides, Hotch is not the sort “to get involved with anybody he works with,” he contends. “Come on, he can’t do that!”

“That being said…,” Gibson added, “we’ll see.”

  1. Amanda says:

I am usually on board with TV romances. I normally want to see main characters get together. But with Criminal Minds, I just can’t see it.

I love the show as much as I love Grey’s Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries, & The Big Bang Theory (all of which have couples that I want to see get together), but I just don’t get that “I want them to be together!” vibe with any of the potential pairings of the main cast.

I’d be okay with subtext and inference of a relationship, as some people have mentioned, but I don’t want (or need) to see it on screen every week.

Criminal Minds is one of the only (maybe THE only?) shows on my weekly rotation that I don’t feel like a relationship is needed. Those characters depend on each other in a life-or-death kind of way that, for me, fulfills the need for the sexual and/or romantic relationship that I usually find myself wanting for main characters. The team is important to one another in a way that doesn’t require anything else. At least between the main group.

Every relationship on the show so far (Hotch & Haley, Garcia & Kevin, JJ & Will) has been handled so well. Sort of like background noise. It’s there, we’re aware of it, but it doesn’t have to be the main focus. I love that.

  2. CM says:

    I’m done with Criminal Minds!

  3. Gaby says:

They don’t need to actually show a romance. Its all in the subtext. If they make it like that its still interesting TV without making it a soap opera! I forever will love the Hotch/Prentiss interactions no matter if they ever get together on screen.

  4. Kate says:

Please, no. When ‘relationships’ become the focus of the show, the show tends to lose its zing. Sexual or romantic chemistry is great (Niles and Daphne!) but once they get together, it is the beginning of the end (Niles and Daphne!)

In case you don’t know Niles and Daphne, they were from ‘Frasier’. The minute they acted on their feelings, the show went down the tubes. There are a zillion other examples as well. Besides, romance would not leave as much time for tracking down the insane serial killers!

    • Melissa says:

So true – look at Moonlighting, the X-Files and other shows that have gone that route. Totally destroyed to fulfill some stupid fantasy that all leads need to be romantically involved. The don’t. You want romance? Go watch Lifetime or Oxygen

  5. Ashley says:

No, thanks – no relationship between Hotch and Prentiss OR any team member with any team member, for that matter. I appreciate JJ’s relationship with Will and Garcia’s relationship with Kevin, but I wouldn’t want to see two regular characters hooking up. It would totally throw off the balance of the show (not to mention how unbelievable it would be for by-the-book Hotch to get involved with a subordinate who answers directly to him).

  6. D says:

I’m a HUGE Hotly (Hotch and Emily) shipper. Even if they never get together I’ll go to my grave shipping them, hell, I’ll even ship them from my afterlife. I’m not saying the writers should put them kissing at every second of every episode, but in seasons 4 and 5 they when they had them spend a lot of time together, they should’ve realised that people would start to wonder about the nature of their relationship, there were huge amounts of subtext between them then. Since episode 10 of season 5 they started to grow apart but still talked or were paired up with each other, but in the entire 6th season they barely ever looked at each other or talked to each other not even about work, and were only paired up together twice, and season 7 is going in the same direction. It’s as if the writers forgot that they work together, that they’re a part of the same team, that they were once friends with each other. I don’t get it, and I’m not enjoying Criminal Minds as much as I used to.

    • Romina says:

      I so agree with you!!!
There’s been lots of subtext between Hotch and Prentiss, so they should just continue that without going full romance.
I’m a hard shipper of Hotch/Prentiss but I hate to see the show turn into a soap opera. I want the writters keep that road open as in a subtext no more, but something present. If the series will be over in the future, or one of the actors leave, yes I WANT to see them as a couple, but no screw ths team dynamics before any of that happen.

      • Twyla Thorpe says:

WHAT is this subtext everyone sees??? O_O Hotch and Emily have been nothing but professional around each other. Showing her concern for him after he’d been stabbed by Foyet is not signs of a romance brewing between them. They’ve never even had a personal moment together.

I see more chemistry between Morgan and Prentiss than Hotch and Prentiss. Just look at how badly her death affected him. He spent 7 months trying to track down her killer. He’s still having trouble adjusting to having her back even though he’s totally happy that she is. Heck, even Reid has more chemistry with Prentiss than Hotch does.

If anyone’s gonna hook up it will be Morgan and Garcia! Those two have been flirting like crazy since day one. They may as well just get it over with! LOL

  7. Anna says:

Emily and Reid. I love them together. I may be the only one though

    • Jaime says:

You’re SO not the only one! I’m totally with you on that… Morgan is too much of a player for Prentiss to tolerate. I think Reid/Prentiss would be awesome together… come on, how many other people can go see movies in russian with them?

  8. kathleen says:

Seriously? If any romance is going to happen with Prentiss, it’ll be with Morgan, right?? Hotch and Prentiss don’t have that much chemistry. Morgan has WAY more chemistry with Prentiss.

  9. JotchProssi says:

I think if they do have interoffice relationships, they should put JJ and Hotch together and Rossi and Prentiss together!

  10. Emm says:

No way!!! I want to see Derek and Emily together, I think they’d make an excellent couple but if that never happens I don’t wanna see them dating other BAU members!!

  11. sophie says:

yeah, yeah, yeah. Keep talking Morgan/Prentiss shippers, we H/P shippers may not get our couple together, but you won’t either. Before season 7 started Shemar said that Morgan would never have a girlfriend and that includes Emily, so, NO H/P and NO M/P. Everyone stays happy.

  12. Tress says:

If there’s an interBAUoffice relationship, I would like to see it as Prentiss and JJ. I know it’s not the most popular pairing but the subtext and the way that JJ looks at her….COME ON!!! Sigh, wishful thinking! =( I’m quite convinced that Prentiss is gay or at least bisexual.

  13. Twyla Thorpe says:

Hotch and Prentiss don’t make any sense. He’s never shown any affinity for her or that she’s even his type. All the women that they’ve shown him being interested in are blonde — his wife and that British lady who died in the car bomb in season 4 (I think).

I think he respects Emily a great deal and would go to great lengths to protect her (hence, faking her death and getting JJ to help him). But I’m sure he would do that for ANYONE on his team.

If anyone is more likely to get together, it would be Hotch and JJ. They’ve known each other for years and the writers have given them a lot of scenes where they seem to care for each other as more than just friends.

Obviously, they can’t get together now, but maybe after she dumps that slimy boyfriend of hers once and for all. HAHA!

    • bklyngirl says:

Twyla, I so agree. JJ and Hotch have this elemental connection between them. The writers already said their bond is that of a kindred spirit. Hotch nearly broke down when she left the BAU. Emily was near death, and Hotch’s reaction was unseen, but who was there in her near death scene, Morgan! And Reid showed emotional grief over Emily! Emily shows she can let her guard down some with Morgan or Reid, with Hotch she is closed up. When Hotch, who mainly is silent about himself, confides to a female it is JJ. There it is.

  14. Monique says:

I’ve never seen any chemistry between Hotch and Prentiss. Not even a friendly closeness except for when Aaron got stabbed and Haley died. I much rather see a romantic relationship happen between Morgan and Prentiss. Hell the writers even wrote a scene where Morgan discusses it with Reid on the plane and they decided to include it in deleted scenes. I’m in the middle about Criminal Minds doing a inter-office romance. If they do I would like it infered and could just live on fanfics for the rest.

  15. Foghorn says:

Wow. No disrespect intended but I think you’re reading WAY too much into those scenes.

Although i will admit that when you go back & watch there’s mini flashes of something but I think how people perceive them is entirely different.

  16. collen says:

Yes, Yes, one thousand times yes. Many people find their significant others in the workplace. Hotch & Prentiss are perfect for each other and can already relate on so many level. CM would be un-watchable for me if the writers put either one with other people.

    • Melissa says:

How about letting the show concentrate on, you know, being a drama and police procedural and not a soap opera. It’s Criminal Minds, not a frakin’ romance

  17. Courtney says:

God no. Leave the romantic relationships between team members in the realm of fan fiction where it can’t do any damage to the show.

  18. Becky says:

First of all, since when are Hotch/Prentiss ‘shippers a SMALL sect!? It’s like watching some friggin mass delusion! I’m pretty sure that the people who say they have “chemistry” actually don’t have the slightest clue what it means. Hotch is a friggin ROBOT – he doesn’t have chemistry with ANYONE, least of all Emily! These ‘shippers actually make me like rage when they’re all like “OMG he kinda sorta smiled while she was in the same room as him that totally means they’re doing it and they’re in love forever and ever and ever!” No. Just, no.

And might I point out that in season two (before they got the Superbowl timeslot and moved episodes around to accommodate that), Morgan/Prentiss basically was slated to happen. See “Fear and Loathing” deleted scene. Because THAT, people, is called CHEMISTRY.

Just wait and see…we shall be vindicated for our long suffering in the shadow of the trainwreck that would be Hotch/Prentiss.

  19. Melissa says:

If they have a Hotch and Prentiss romance I will lose all respect for the show, the writers and the actors. Hasn’t anyone learned from Moonlighting, The X Files and other shows that have been absolutely destroyed by giving in to some romantic fantasy that leads in dramas should get married/have an affair? It is the most preposterous thing ever. I don’t watch police procedurals/dramas to see a romance – I watch it for the action, the adventure, the seriousness of the subject matter. Really, you people who are lobbying for this should go watch Lifetime and leave Criminal Minds alone.

    • Lizzy says:

Yep, of course the reason that people stopped liking and watching X Files wasn’t that David Duchovny left, “TXF: The Next Generation” with Doggett and Reyes started, or the fact that the stories became rather lame because Chris Carter & Co. just couldn’t seem to stop (same with Stargate, by the way). Nooo, it was *of course* the romance between Mulder and Scully that only began somewhere in the last two seasons and was never even hinted at before.
      …Excuse the sarcasm.
I got news for you. The “Moonlighting Curse” is complete nonsense. Like so many other things that were told the audience over the years. Take a show – ANY show – and try to think of it without even the slightest hint of shipping/flirting/romance between the main characters. And then tell me if the show would be as interesting. It wouldn’t work. It’s just like that. Not even MONK got away without it, even though I think Monk is one of the most romance-less TV shows of all time (I enjoyed watching it anyways, just so you know).
I don’t talk about them going on like rabbits. But you can’t avoid chemistry, (close) friendship, and that people who work together more or less 24/7 don’t take some interest in their colleagues, even if they don’t act on these feelings.

      • Chelsea says:

Thank you! I think that relationships with main characters are difficult to write, so the “Moonlighting Curse” is an excuse to just not write them. A show like Criminal Minds certainly would not have any characters humping on the round table, and I wish that was a given. At work, the BAU team are absolutely professional. the glimpses we get of their personal lives are just that–glimpses. What’s more, when you do see them outside of work, they’re screwing anyone’s brains out!
I would love Hotch and Prentiss together, but I feel very strongly that it would have to be low-key. They would stay professional. The most we would see would be something like them walking out of the FBI building together. I mean, would that be so horrible? Prime-time TV is not porn, and Criminal Minds is not Grey’s Anatomy. And I like it that way, but that doesn’t mean that a relationship couldn’t work in a different “CM” kind of way.

  20. fillymd says:

If they put Hotch or Prentiss with anyone other than each other, I’m done with this show. This is supposed to be the season for the fans according to Erica Messer. If it’s the intent to make H/P fans unhappy, I will no longer watch. I’d be gutted if they bring in another woman for Hotch, or some other man for Prentiss. I am way too invested in these two characters being with each other to be able to enjoy my favorite show after that.

I’d rather they not be with anyone, if they can’t be with each other. If this truly is a season for the fans, then Erica and the writers need to put Hotch and Prentiss together or leave well enough alone. Don’t drive H/P fans away.

    • Melissa says:

Please. Go watch Lifetime or Oxygen. This is a police procedural drama not Love Boat.

      Gawd I Hate Shippers.

      • Jojo says:

If you want purely procedural, go watch a documentary.

Most Hotch/Prentiss know that their relationship is special and therefore any romance of theirs will be different from other shows. They are not going to run around the table and chase each other. Paget is smart enough to know her Hotch/Prentiss fans much better than that. Any romance will be in the background and not be the focus. CM is a classy show and any Hotch/Prentiss fan worth their CM salt will know that.

      • Tress says:

Wow, you need to relax. It’s a show. How about explaining your anti-Hotch/Prentiss views WITHOUT insulting other fans then be on your merry way. Everybody has a right to their opinion on the subject without the threat of being degraded.

  21. Syl says:

I don’t really care one way or the other if Prentiss/Hotch date. I would much rather see a Morgan/Garcia romance.

  22. Lizzy says:

Criminal Minds is one of the very few shows on TV that works without any romance for me.
Thus said, I also have to add that I’m a die-hard shipper; I think shipping is a part of TV, of fiction in general, hell, even of non-fiction/real life. Our lives are all about loving and being loved (in any way – not only sexually, of course). Shipping has become an important part of TV and film; the way shows were made 20 or 30 years ago wouldn’t work anymore today.
With CM, it’s like this for me: I love the show how it is. I love the team as a family, how they stand together, how they are there for each other. I love those rare moments when they laugh together, tease each other or even flirt (the latter means esp. Morgan and Garcia, of course). This show is in its seventh year and it’s still interesting, thrilling, compelling – something you can’t say about every long-running show out there.
Still, I have always liked the idea of Hotch/Prentiss. I agree with those people who named some of the moments indicating that there is a special bond between these two, despite their otherwise absolutely professional relationship. I don’t know if it’s the actors who harmonize so perfectly, or the authors writing now and then a little hint, or both. I only know that of all team members, those two would make the most fitting couple.
Yes, Hotch has lost his wife through the hands of a serial killer who was also his personal nemesis. Yes, he is the boss and Emily a team member, they are colleagues. Yes, a relationship between could be weird. That’s why I can’t really decide whether I want such a relationship – because it’s hard to imagine. I wouldn’t want to see two super happy lovebirds who kiss and giggle while trying to solve gruesome murders.
However, I’m pretty sure that’s not what we would get. Maybe one should not get the wrong idea here. “Romance” seems to make everyone think of teenies making out. But there’s so much more to it.
I can see them work together like they do now – but going home after work together, relax on the couch, content to have someone who understands their work and the horrors they see every day. At the moment, they are both alone; they come home to an empty house/apartment and there’s no one to talk to, to just hug them with quiet understanding. This is what they could be for each other. This is not about two teenagers who can’t control their hormones, but about two adults who’ve seen too much for one life already. Two adults who maybe need this feeling of being loved, deeply loved. And they deserve this little bit of happiness being, living together could give them.
Btw, I like it how PB and TG are not totally against the idea ;)
And a word on Morgan/Prentiss: For some reason, I never saw that. Best friends, yes. Siblings, “fighting” like brother and sister, yes (just like Prentiss and Reid). But nothing more.

    • Twyla Thorpe says:

What do you mean they’re “not totally against the idea.” Paget just said that the idea of them fooling around while kids are dying is NOT. APPEALING. Thomas said “no no no” unless they were drunk. And when the heck will that ever happen?? NEVER.

This show is based on the chemistry of the team as a whole, not its parts. If there’s any romantic subtext between any of the couples, it’s not between Hotch and Prentiss.

  23. Justin says:

I would have to say no to any team relationship. I think the show is just fine as it is, sans inter-office romance. If one happened, I wouldn’t be mad, but I can’t encourage one thinking it will ruin the great dynamic of this show. This procedural, which is the best on television to me, has survived for seven years without any hint of team romance. So why experiment now? If it aint’t broke, don’t fix it.

  24. Sammie says:

Hotch & Prentiss would be a great coupling if the CM writers were daring enough to go there. Hotch is not that kind of guy, exactly what does that mean. She’s his subordinate; so what; superiors connect with their subordinates all the time. I don’t thinks they should be in the board room making out when they’re on a case; but they certainly can be shown spending some quality time together as “special” friends. People who are “not supposed to be” together fall in love all the time.

It would be great seeing Hotch struggling with the fact that the woman of his dreams may be working with him. And he and Haley had been divorced at least 2 or 3 years before she was killed; so technically they weren’t together for nearly 5 years. He needs to get on with his life. He’s not a monk. And he doesn’t need another woman, only Prentiss.

  25. Jojo says:

Hotch and Prentiss can work as the groundwork has been laid out since S3. When Haley was alive, Hotch loved her even when they divorced later. But as time went on after her death, Hotch has been feeling more and more empty and lonely. He probably has to face that someday and the time is probably now in S7.

I think Hotch has feelings for Emily and likewise for her too. Hotch/Prentiss will not be the archetypal grand romance that end up with them having sex and getting married. That’s fanfic.

The romance comes when they struggle privately with their feelings for each other. Is it love? Is it even ethical? They might end up acknowledging each other’s attraction but will not act on it as duty trumps all things. Rossi will be the one who will perceive this attraction, judging from his “inkling” in 7.02 that Emily was not dead. Rossi even hinted he knew in S6 “Hanley Waters”, when he asked about how Hotch is coping with the ‘loss’ of Emily plus loss of Haley all within a year. He noted that Hotch grieved privately. He later gave a toast to BOTH Haley and Emily and Hotch toasted too. Why lump Haley and Emily together?

  26. Julie says:

The only way CM should have an office romance is if they write me into the show and hook me up with Prentiss.

  27. Jojo says:

The often-quoted deleted scene between Prentiss and Morgan just shows Morgan staying true to his character : a great-looking guy who loves women and is flirty and fun to be with, and that’s about it. He flirts with Prentiss, yes, but he also flirts with Garcia, another agent who took over JJ for a while and dances with ladies while the team has a relaxing time at the bar.

Reid is a younger brother to Emily. She was acting all motherly towards him in 7.02, trying to convince him to join them for pasta party at Rossi’s. I always see her as very protective towards him.

  28. Moe says:

Forget Hotch and Emily—I’m pulling for Derek and Emily!

  29. Danielle says:

I think Emily has relatively good chemistry with most of her BAU team-mates. Honestly, I could see her with Hotch, Morgan or Reid, although I have a special fondness for Prentiss/Reid.

Yeah, she’s probably about 10 years his senior, but they’re both adults and I don’t see the issue (though I do understand why some people might!).

Regardless, I am just glad Paget is back on the show. She’s a wonderful actress and I think she is a vital part of the BAU team.

  30. christy` says:

No to Hotch and Prentiss although I do think that Hotch does need to have a woman come into his life. But she should not be a woman who works for the FBI or any where else. He needs a woman he can come home to who can help him forget about the job and the dark creatures that he meets. Prentiss is not that person. She needs a man that will support her and love her and treat her like a queen because she needs someone to take care of her. Hotch can’t do that. He is too intense for her in that respect.

  31. Jaime says:

I cant believe there hasnt been any love for the Reid/Prentiss pairing!! They’d be adorable together… Hotch is too serious, and Morgan is too much of a player for her. Reid has matured to the point where he could handle dating an older woman and they obviously have outside interests in common (he invited her to see Solaris in Russian)…

    • Danielle says:

I’m with you, Jaime – I think a Prentiss/Reid pairing could be interesting. I think an older, more worldly, but caring woman is exactly what Reid needs. Plus, as you mentioned, they do have things in common (she’s a self-confessed nerd, after all!). Come on, it’d be all kinds of adorable (and hot, since they’re both extremely attractive people)!

      • Jaime says:

Exactly… plus you gotta go back to Minimal Loss, Reid hardly shakes anyones hand, yet in the same episode he hugged her and held Prentiss’ hand? A) Too adorable, and B) an obvious show of his trust. Plus, she is the only one he told about his headaches. Prentiss is young enough to be enthusiastic about the things that he is, but old enough to be a bit of a grounding force for him. And its always a plus that I’m a fan of nerd- lovin. When his “science magic” trick hit her in the head, she was more upset over him not telling her what it was than the fact that it hit her in the head in the first place…

    • Diane says:

Morgan is too much of a player??? When was the last time he was portrayed as that? A long time ago….
Morgan/prentiss all the way… Especially after that last episode

      • Jaime says:

Too much flirting without any serious intent… same reason she rejected Mick Rawson, minus the British Accent. They’re two alphas, they’d fight over everything

  32. Diane says:

Gees… These last few episodes and the doyle arc have convinced Morgan is in love with Emily

    Morgan/prentiss all the way

  33. Sammie says:

With all that Hotch has been through, I find it hard to believe that he’s is inflexible is still guided by this hard line obligation to the job when true love and potential happiness is staring him in the face.

For CM to float this in the press because they are too cowardly to take the risk to see how the overall audience would respond is a disappointment to say the least. The writers are so afraid of the Hotch/Prentiss conversation that they won’t even write a decent conversation between the characters anymore. They spent all of season 6 ensuring that H/P fans were screwed and now it looks like they may do the same thing in season 7. They used to know how to write smart, sub-textual scenes between Hotch and Prentiss; but we don’t even get that anymore.

It will always be Hotch and Prentiss for me. Morgan is good with Garcia. But I’m getting tired of the skittishness of the writers and showrunnner. Like someone else said, Erica said Season 7 would be for the fans. Why choose to continue to screw H/P fans? I’m holding out hope that someone with CM or CBS will dare to take the risk to see what happens. H/P can be smartly written as a back story and not turned into a soap.

I know if some strange woman or man is introduced for either one, I’ll make Modern Family my new Wednesday habit.

  34. lea says:

Why is this even a story?

    • Danielle says:

Because it’s entertainment-related and, from the amount of comments, it’s clearly generated a lot of interest.

If you’re not interested, then move along. Easy. :)

  35. Sara says:

And I mean HECK NO!! If I want to see more romance on the show it would be either Penelope or Spencer.

  36. Rosie says:

i think that a romance between hotch and prentiss sounds like a great idea! They don’t have to have like a super serious romance, but at least a kiss between the two would be like super awsome!

  37. love_sil says:

So, it’s no ok for Hotch & Prentiss but is it ok for Morgan & Prentiss? Because I don’t see people complaining about M/P.

    • bklyngirl says:

love_sil, You need to read up above comments about Morgan too much of a player for Emily.
Morgan is not all about that. He shows he is a rock to rely on, and shows his vulnerability.

  38. Anne says:

I remember when the show was really good (seasons 1-4), before they fired the good authors and the show was actually about the cases without telling us, who the bad guy is right away and turning the show into a splatter movie. In season 1, episode 4, Gideon gave Reid baseball/football tickets for his birthday and told him to invite JJ to it. He did and the only thing we ever heard about it again was at the beginning of the next episode when Reid said he wasn’t going to talk about it. Back then, the producer (I think) said, they weren’t going to pursue it because it would mess with the show and he was RIGHT!!!

If I want sexual tension on a show, I watch Castle.

I always thought it was ridiculous when fans said they were done with a show if this or that were to happen, but on this matter I completely agree. This show has changed so much in just two seasons, it doesn’t even feel like the Criminal Minds I fell in love with 6 years ago. Every week I watch, hoping it will return to the great show it ones was, but it doesn’t. This is a show about profiling. I don’t mind seeing little snippets of the main characters personal life, but an inter-team relationship would throw the whole thing of balance.

Eww! No! I would never have considered this, but now that it is mentioned, I am disturbed.
While I would like to see more of their personal lives, as currently they only acknowledge JJ and Garcia as having current love interests, I don’t think any of these people are the type to date co-workers. Romance blooming over a murder case is too creepy.

  40. Maggie says:

If there is to be a romance on CM it has to be Morgan/Prentiss…
    They are AWESOME together.
    And Hotch is boring.

  41. Alex says:

One of the best ways CM is different from other cop shows is that, while the cast all has TREMENDOUS chemistry with each other- whether the men and women, men and men, or women and women- they never act on it. Keep it that way, and leave the romance stuff to us fanfiction writers!

  42. Jocelyn says:

I agree that Thomas and Paget have great screen chemistry and that should be capitalised on. Although I am a die-hard Hotch/Prentiss shipper, I must say I think it would be more appropriate for the show if they were shown to have a deep friendship. That’s a good middle ground isn’t it? No romance, and yet keeps us Hotch/Prentiss fans living in hope! So I vote for more screen time together, in an appropriate manner and please, please, no random outside love interest for Hotch. I keep having visions of another woman that doesn’t get him. Which is one of the main reasons I think why so many people ship Prentiss and Hotch. Although if they do get together in like the FINAL few episodes of ths show, I will die a happy woman!

  43. Peter says:

I had to laugh at Paget’s valid point against romance. Why must it be during working hours? Certainly not! No one wants to see that. Why not outside of work? Generally I’m not against romance in shows – it brings more facets to the fictional characters like in real life. CM can show it or not – and I can live with their decision. But my dear authors, please stop avoiding to show us Hotch and Prentiss together on screen. It’s weird – always the same pairing during cases (for example Prentiss/Morgan). I like them as a team, but I feel as if I get an overdose. Bring more Hotch/Prentiss, Reid/Morgan, Prentiss/Reid, JJ/Rossi, Morgan/Garcia etc. Pls. mix the team in balance so every one can enjoy. Sidenote: And until S6, I thought there is something between Hotch / Emily at least a true friendship or even more… but since then I don’t know it’s nothing there anymore. How could it with no scenes together

  44. Susie says:

Put me in the camp of the NO WAY’S. I will quit watching and I have been a devoted fan since the first episode aired. I do not want office romances with these characters.
For a while I wanted Garcia and Morgan to get together but I totally love their “best friends who flirt” thing now so much I don’t want them together either.
I’m glad Paget and Thomas are against the idea. I think they and the writers/producers are right to keep romance out. Waiting for romance has ruined a former favorite show of mine, Bones. I hope that it doesn’t also ruin Castle because I really really like that show!!

    • Jojo says:

Thomas and Paget are not totally against the idea of Hotch and Prentiss pairing up. They are questioning on the “how’s” of it happening in the context of the whole canon of the show’s setting and premise.

      • bklyngirl says:

Well it sounds as they do. You need them to come to your door and tell you, so you can get the message. Good grief!

  45. Cece says:

I, personally, would much rather see a Reid-Prentiss OUT OF THE OFFICE romance. With maybe a few cute glances and smiles every once in a while. :)

  46. Jojo says:

Nah, Prentiss treats Reid like a younger brother. She’s protective of him and even motherly, check out 7.02 where she persuaded him to join the team at Rossi’s home for pasta party. In earlier season, Reid was actually more into JJ. He even wanted to date her. Remember, Reid has mommy issues.

  47. April N says:

Go for it Erica!Hotch & Prentiss yes all the way! They’re beautiful together. Haunted, Nameless Faceless, 52 Pickup, we haven’t had any good H/P in a very long time. If Hotch gets a romance, it had better be Emily!

  48. Meg says:

No thank you very much. I adore Criminal Minds precisely because it doesn’t have any office relationship/romance twaddle on it.

  49. MeganG says:

Yes! I’d love to see Hotch and Prentiss together; and Paget and Thomas didn’t completely rule it out.

At least more scenes together. We’ve got none really

  50. Beth says:

Thank god, I can’t see what all the Prentiss/Hotch shippers see. In the scenes they do have together they always seem like professionals.

I liked it when they had some conflict early on in season 2, I liked nerdy awkward Prentiss but I don’t get what chemistry other they have. Prentiss has chemistry with Morgan, Rossi and even Reid but with Hotch its always appeared boss/subordinate.

I don’t mind Garcia/Kevin but I don’t really want to see any other relationship on the show especially between the team members, (even though I love a good JJ/Hotch scene)

    • bklyngirl says:

Just because they’re the lead characters, these people think it’s an oath for them to be together. Hilarious. Hotch never shows even a slight tendency towards Prentiss, the way a man does to a woman when he is attracted to her. Prentiss shines with Morgan and Reid, who are responsive to her. It is what it is.
