Criminal Minds Duo Shoot Down Hotch/Prentiss Romance Buzz: 'It's a Hard Line to Ride'

Write about CBS’ Criminal Minds (airing Wednesdays at 9/8c) — any story about it, really — and a small sect of fans is sure to surface throwing their weight behind a someday romance between BAU agents Hotch (played by Thomas Gibson) and Prentiss (Paget Brewster).

“They have good chemistry and look great together, and she could bring out a less serious side to him,” one TVLine reader recently commented. “I want to see my Hotch have some fun.”

Another reader chimed in, “The writers could get a lot of creative, intriguing material from a Hotch/Prentiss coupling,” while a third was a bit more extreme with her investment in the would-be coupling, declaring, “If the writers don’t put Hotch and Prentiss together in Season 7 it will be a travesty. They deserve to be together.”

Perhaps more than ever, given how Hotch was one of only two people entrusted with the secret of Emily’s faked death.

Casting News: Criminal Minds Eyes Heroes Favorite

Yet at least two factors might keep the Criminal Minds coworkers from ever broaching a workplace romance. For one, Hotch’s ex-wife was killed by a serial killer not two calendar years ago. There’s also the matter of while it’s one thing to have a lunch date with Lenny, the guy who drives the delivery van at your flower shop, it’s another to mix pleasure with a business that is so not conducive to canoodling.

“I’ve read [about some fans' want for a romance] and I don’t know how to respond to it,” Paget Brewster recently shared with TVLine. “I understand it on the one hand, because in the real FBI, people work so closely and are only around each other, so chances are that sooner or later they date each other. In some ways, it’s human nature.”

But on the other hand — and this is a valid point — “The idea that Hotch and I might be fooling around in a roundtable room when children are dying somewhere is really not appealing,” Brewster notes. “It’s a really hard line to ride, so I don’t know if they’ll ever write that. I really don’t.”

Criminal Minds Season 7 Gets Personal, Bringing Back JJ’s Baby Daddy and More

Thomas Gibson was similarly bearish on the idea when we ran it by him moments later, responding, “No, no, no…. Not unless it was one of those drunken evenings between Hotch and Prentiss.” (Yeah, one of those evenings. As if!)

Besides, Hotch is not the sort “to get involved with anybody he works with,” he contends. “Come on, he can’t do that!”

“That being said…,” Gibson added, “we’ll see.”

No. Criminal Minds doesn’t need an office romance. The reason JJ/Baby Daddy and Garcia/Kevin work is because we barely see it. You pretty much forget about it until one of the other halves is needed for something.

    • Ele says:

Absolutely right. A relationship between any of the team members would be really weird and would disrupt the good working friendly relation they share….no romance between them…but they sure can have Hotch get a life outside the office!

    • tvgeek says:

Completely agree. We already have too many shows that focus more on the romance than on the procedural stuff, no need for yet another one. Plus, I see more chemistry between Prentiss and Morgan than between her and Hotch.

      • Iris says:

Please, Morgan is into Prentiss but he’s not even on her radar.
Despite the fact that lots of couples are shipped, they aren’t all equally sensible. Garcia has a legit crush on Morgan, but Morgan is actually likes Prentiss, while she pays more attention to Hotch (and vice versa).
Even though people say they don’t want romance on this show, it’s been reported Hotch will get a love interest later on. I for one don’t want to see him with some nobody (I didn’t at all care for that woman Morgan was maybe/kinda seeing last season). So I’d be perturbed at another outsider taking up screentime.
There’s been lots of subtext between Hotch and Prentiss, so they should just continue that without going full romance.

        • Cindy says:

I agree, although I dont really want a full blown affair shown, a lttle bit of bomding, glimples of interactions would be nice. I like the way they have done it so far, so you could see that Hotch and Prentiss perhaps pay a little bit more attention to each other. Remmember how Hotch reacted when Emily gor beated up and all they can do were listened? Things like that is enough and if they want full romance do it at the end of the series.

    • Jenny says:

AMEN! If they write these two into a romance I will tune out!

    • L says:

I absolutely agree. I watch this show BECAUSE it doesn’t have all the stupid drama and the whole “will-they-won’t-they” that every other show is trying to pitch and becomes annoying sooner or later. Criminal Minds is about the cases, the murders, not lovey-dovey crap.

      • Cheery says:

Most people who support a Hotch/Prentiss “romance” have clarified that they don’t even want a full-blown relationship, just the deepening friendship exhibited in earlier seasons.
For a while now there have been practically no scenes of them together, which is understandably upsetting to people who are invested in them. Suddenly Hotch and Prentiss barely say a word to each other, hardly even look at each other–at this point it’d be a miracle if they even stood together in the same shot.
It’s a shame that after seasons of crafting such a nuanced and special relationship with them the writers have decided to throw it all away. Instead, now we get Morgan running his game on Prentiss. Last ep I wanted to gag when he went all creeper on her and was soliciting a back rub. Save the pervy comments for Garcia; do we really need Morgan talking to Prentiss like that as well??
Just give viewers the old Hotch and Prentiss relationship back and everything will be good.

    • Judy G. says:

An obvious “attraction” would be very scintillating to the audience, sort of like Muldar and Sculley in “The X Files”, but just the hint of love is as far as it should go. If it goes farther, you start to lose the anticipation and thus the viewers.

    • NeverHP says:

Exactly @B. I don’t want to see hp on the show. Ever. The hp fans are not numerous as they contend trying to justify the thought of hp on the show, it’s just that a few are so LOUD about their incessant never-ending desire for hp intercourse on the show that an article like this would even be needed. They need to realize that most CM viewers are NOT hp fans. Fanfic about it all you want I could care less, but stop bothering the producers to make something happen that is so far from the actual point of this show that it’s laughable. Go watch a soap opera for romance – CM is not about that.

  2. temopo says:

NO way!Prentiss and Morgan are the best…Watch the episode tonight!

    • Sally says:

Criminal Minds is probably the only show where I can ship everyone with everyone. Morgan/Garcia? Yup. Morgan/Prentiss? Yup. Morgan/Reid? Yup. Too lazy to name them all, but yeah. lol

    • Sally says:

The thing that really sets CM apart from other shows is that there’s no big relationship going on… That being said, if there were to be any romance within the team going on, then my vote for Prentiss and Morgan. Always has been and always will be =)

    • NeverHP says:

Morgan and Prentiss are hot but it won’t happen cuz it’s not inline with the show’s formula – it takes all 44 minutes to find these impossible unsubs – there is no room for romance in such a serious show, but the witty banter between team members keeps things
      light(er).

And even tho Paget and Thomas basically just said hp’s not gonna happen you know hp fans will somehow read into it as some kind of reverse logic that means to them that hp will happen, ugh(*tired and disgusted sigh from dealing w hp bs*).

  3. Alicia says:

F-CK YES! Praise their light, all hail the OTP, TV Gods make is so!! :D

    • Alicia says:

Ahem, anyway :D … people wouldn’t ship Hotch and Prentiss if the show hadn’t already laid so much groundwork for them.
      Examples:
      – Prentiss arrives at the BAU with suspicious transfer papers but Hotch gives her a chance/lets her on the team after an intense convo in his office in the dark.
      – After Strauss fires Prentiss for refusing to sell out Hotch, he comes by her place to ask her to go on one more case, “I want you on that plane with me.”
      – Hotch’s ruptured eardrum (from the SUV explosion) was being aggravated by the noise from a crane lifting a coffin, and Prentiss went to comfort him while he was holding his head in pain.
      – When Hotch is attacked by Foyet in his apartment and fails to show up to work, Prentiss is super-paranoid about why he’s missing and goes to his place where she discovers the pool of blood.
      – Prentiss is the one to track Hotch down to the hospital and learns he’s been stabbed by Foyet. She sits in the room with him the whole time while he’s unconscious, while the rest of the team works a case.
      – All the facial expressions she has while Hotch is passed out; dread, axiety, worry, sadness and the happiness when he wakes up.
      – The first case post Hotch’s hospitalization, Prentiss takes him home afterward to make sure he’s alright and they have a cryptic conversation about “not feeling alone” and “having someone.”
I could go on, especially now that Hotch was responsible for keeping Prentiss’ secret from the rest of the team…

      • Hey says:

I don’t see how any of any of this is more than the actions of a concerned friend and coworker.

        • Yup says:

True, but the keyword was “groundwork”, not “subtext”.

        • NeverHP says:

Exactly – the above hp fan just commented on all six scenes w hp, considering there are six seasons behind us six scenes between them is miniscule. hp fans are into wishful thinking.(nice way of saying delusional, haha)

          • Mandy says:

Oh there’s tons more of those scenes!

          • AlwaysHP says:

I think NeverHP just knows it’s an amazing ship or ships some weird ass crap and doesn’t want them together xD They’ve done nothing but bash HOTCHNISS and it’s fans…lol.

        • Mandy says:

Ok well how about “Demonology”. There was a ton of H/P subtext in that episode. Why they did a lot of what they did. The tone of voice and the looks.
Why wouldn’t Emily just call Hotch about Matthew and a maybe case, instead of going back to the office? And as for Hotch, he calls her Emily, which made her stop in her tracks when she was about to leave. Hotch’s face experession changed when Emily leaves. The actors make these characters what they are. If the writers did not want them to use those expressions, they would say so. The script tells the actors alot of the physical and emotional expressions that they want them to use. Therefore the H/P shipping only exist because it’s there…in the script. Watch seasons 3,4 & 5 especially. That is where it starts. The dance in the finale was not just for the shippers only. Hotch and Prentiss had gotten closer. Two people don’t fall in love in one night suddenly after years. Erica Messer said they would have something together if he wasnt her boss. This is why they allowed the two of them to dance like that and Emily to say “It’s a date”. He’s no longer her boss. Btw Paget is coming back for a least one episode in season 8. Maybe more. Just info.

      • Birdie says:

Another example is “Minimal Loss” as Hotch, Rossi and Morgan are listening to Prentiss get beaten by Cyrus. Rossi and Morgan, yep, you see what you expected from concerned colleagues and friends, anger, pain, frustration, etc. But Hotch’s reactions, including being the FIRST to say, “We need to go in” (not Morgan who tends to be the more impulsive one), and then his subsequent reactions where he looks like he’s simply dying sitting there listening, seems to go beyond what Rossi and Morgan were feeling, at least.

        • NeverHP says:

Hotch is the boss – he should show more concern for a subordinate who is getting beaten up, they are his responsibility. Duh. And I’ll tell you if hotch, rossi and morgan ran in it would be morgan that got down and dirty the most stopping the unsub from hurting emily, rossi next, lastly hotch. Duh, again.

          • jennrae says:

Um, yeah, right before yet another baddie got the drop on Morgan, once again! Every time he tries to play the hero he gets conked over the head. He’s the most incompetent muscle in the history of television.

          • Mandy says:

Yeah but that same boss doesn’t have to have tears in his eyes though. They were visible. He wasn’t as upset about Reid been abused in “Revelations” as he was Emily. He was upset but not like that. It doesn’t matter how much people get tired of H/P, it won’t just stop. It’s hard to when it’s in the show itself :)

      • Jojo says:

U r absolutely spot-on about the groundwork that has been laid and it is time that the producers acknowledge it. There are more:

        1) In 7.01, when Morgan told Hotch who was in Pakistan about having found Doyle and Declan, Morgan said, “And if it is him?”, Hotch replied,”then you take the shot.” This cuts to the next scene with JJ quizzing Morgan, “that’s all he said, “take the shot”?” – Hotch is acting out of character here as his first course will be to take the unsub to justice instead of ordering his subordinates to kill. Even JJ is surprised at Hotch’s command to Morgan. To me, it simply shows Hotch can go out of the way for someone he cares about and in this case, Emily. I thought Morgan will be the one to either shoot Doyle or beat him up badly but no, he brought him to justice instead, as what he told senator Cramer.

        2) what I said above is related to S6.18 “Lauren” when Hotch was interviewing the British agent. Hotch said “if anything happens to her, I will destroy you, you can count on that” The only person he destroyed with such force was Foyet, who killed Haley. When the agent asked him if he would break his FBI oath to kill Doyle, as there’s “no catching that man…if you want to stop that man, you have to put a bullet between his eyes yourself, can you do it, can you break your oath.” Hotch replied no but that the team will save her. So Hotch broke his oath by giving command to Morgan in 7.01 to shoot Doyle! Isn’t this out of character for Hotch?

        3) Subtle glances and outright stares at each other from both characters throughout S3-6. For example, look at how Paget played out the scene in 5.06 “The Eyes Have It.” with her subtle smile at Hotch’s dig at Morgan.

        • NeverHP says:

Come on – Hotch would tell any unsubs that threatened either emily, jj, or garcia that he would ‘destroy’ them, that line was not an indication of his ‘love’ for emily. in fact he probably would say it if any of the male team members were threatened as well. he is just being a determined boss.

  4. isabel says:

NO! I completely agree with the first comment.

  5. Birdie says:

I can see the arguments against it, but quite frankly I’m for Hotch and Emily being together. Simply because it seems like a good evolutionary step, IMO, for their characters and the actors work really well together. BUT, I think what could happen is that it’s teased for a few seasons. Flirting and a close friendship, but not crossing that line just yet. Thomas Gibson and Paget Brewster have fabulous chemistry and look good together, and no I’m not the reader quoted in the article, but “Criminal Minds” can take it a long way with just some flirting, deep conversations and a close friendship. Then maybe a few seasons down the line, something more.

  6. sandee says:

I like AJ and Hotch together.

  7. Mcat says:

On the one hand, I’m starting to fall for Prentiss and Morgan. On the other hand, I don’t want any romance between the main characters on this show. Either way, NO to Prentiss and Hotch.

    • kendall says:

I hate to think of Hotch and Prentiss together. Morgan and Prentiss is a much more logical choice. I have a feeling that is where they are going this season. Morgan’s reaction to Emily’s return, his vengeance against Doyle and they could really work with the recertification storyline since he’s the one recertifiying her. I really hope they put them together!

      • Christine says:

I completely agree that Morgan and Prentiss seem like a much better, more logical choice. They have crazy chemistry, so I would LOVE for them to get together! Especially after how Morgan reacted to Prentiss’ return (and how he reacted when she “died”). Although if the writers were going to go down that road with Morgan/Prentiss, I would think that, for this show, it would be best to have it more drawn-out, with hints dropped here and there, otherwise it would be straying too far from the nature of the show.

  8. Birdie says:

I would also like to say that I’m glad SOMEONE is finally interviewing Paget in some way. I thought it was weird that since the premiere episode was about her character’s return, we had so few comments/interviews from her. Thanks for doing that!

  9. Cheery says:

While crossing the professional line and ACTUALLY dating might be inadvisable, there’s no harm in a little flirting between Hotch and Prentiss. Morgan and Garcia practically have phone sex and no one has a problem with that.

    • NeverHP says:

There is no chemistry between hotch and prentiss so any flirting would be awkward and, imo, gross. hotch doesnt seem like the ‘flirting’ type anyway.

  10. hello says:

People who only cares about who screws each other makes me sick

  11. Lena says:

Well, the writers have sworn multiple times not to go down the office romance route. So I never really had hopes that anything in that dept was ever going to happen.

The friendship line that we saw in 5×01 and 5×02, however, was quite sweet and I think they could do with more of that without it being inappropriate.

  12. WattaKitty says:

I’d love for *everyone* to get a little loving this season, but no intra-team romance! It would change forever and ever the chemistry of the Team we have all grown to know and love so fiercely. Some might be pleased but a huge chunk of the fandom would be outraged no matter how it was played. Success is all about numbers, and CM cannot afford to tick off a large sector of the viewing public. *digging my toes in, ready to fight*

    • NeverHP says:

I hear you – no fn hp, or any intra team romance – shows that give in to that are desperate for ratings. to do it to cm would be an injustice, cm is a very serious show about chasing sick criminals – there is no time for romance. altho, the jj/will and garcia/kevin were tastefully done and didnt take over, they just added to the plots and they were not intra-team.

Yes, most fans dont beg for romance on such a serious show, and there really are very few hp fans worldwide, the fact that they are just so loudly obsessed with their little ship is the only reason it gets any attention such as this article.

  13. Tanya says:

Oh, tough one. Not to sound indecisive but agree with both sides. I don’t think Criminal Mind needs an office romance but I wouldn’t mind knowing that the characters have not only a life outside their jobs, but a romantic life as well. It doesn’t even need to be overtly shown – just a comment or two between characters.

I agree with Paget that it would be a little jarring to have Hotch and Prentiss all kissy kissy while they’re tracking rapists and serial killers.

Then again (remember indecisive!) Criminal Minds is overall so well-written and acted that they could pull off a mature romance that not stupid and nonsensical (you know – driving your car into your ex-girlfriend’s home).

  14. Johanna says:

ABSOLUTELY YES! THEY DEFINITELY SHOULD GO ON A RELATIONSHIP, THEY ARE SO MEANT FOR EACHOTHERS!!!! :) <3

  15. Delta says:

I certainly DON’T want to see a romance between Hotch and Prentiss.
I don’t see anything romantic between them, the scenes they share together are not different from the scenes Hotch shares with his other team mates.

  16. Clara says:

No Hotch/prentiss. There isn’t that kind of relationship there

There are far more appealing pairings on the show. That being said the writers just need to stick to their guns of no inter office relationships

This will tear the fandom apart

  17. Hty says:

Morgan/prentiss makes far more sense.. Just look at their chemistry through out the years plus his reaction to her ‘death’

    Morgan/prentiss all the way

  18. Sil says:

    Hotch & Prentiss…yes!
The writers could do this. They don’t need to give the audience graphic details. Just subtle things here and there and I think it would work just fine.
They can’t waste the opportunity because Paget and Thomas are great actors and fantastic together.

  19. Milena says:

Why not? I know people who met the love of their lives at the Office. They don’t have to show us all the personal stuff of them, it is still a Drama show and not a soap opera. But really, those are also human beings with needs.. So, I can see it happen. They know each other well, how the job is….they have lots of similarities. I can see it happen, not yet but in the future, yes.

  20. Sus says:

I say yay as long as the romance is between Emily and JJ.

  21. Raven says:

OMG YES!!!!! I love Hotch/Prentiss and I think they would bring out the best in each other. For Hotch, the less serious side and for Emily, finally having someone who she can say she trusts. I know it’s a grim show, as Thomas always says, but I think a little romance could help lighten up certain aspects. I also believe the mix of crime drama and romance would spike up the ratings…And romance between Hotch/Prentiss is something I’d LOVE to see go down. Prentiss and Morgan? No. They’re better off being flirty friends. JJ and Hotch? Can you say adultery? Emily and Hotch make the most sense to me! The chemistry that’s there is undeniable!!!!

  22. Kelly says:

Paget and Thomas seem really uncomfortable with th HP thing. People need to leave them and the writers alone and let them so what they do best

They are clearly not ok with this

  23. Elle says:

I feel like Prentiss and Hotch are both focused enough so they could have a relationship and keep the work side out of it. But the two of them have wonderful personalities that mesh so well together. I definitely vote Em-Aaron.

  24. Raven says:

…AND, if Hotch/Prentiss don’t “hook up”, can we at least see a little more vulnerability with the two of them? They’ve never even brushed arms before! Little things like that, I can be happy with!

  25. Amy says:

    I don’t want a Hotch/Prentiss romance… only cause I do want a Morgan/Prentiss romance.

  26. Halley says:

The argument of Morgan/prentiss should just stay flirty friends really isn’t an argument.
All the ground work has been laid down for MP over the seasons and the lauren arc has really cemented it

  27. Mcgarrygirl78 says:

I’m a Hotch/Prentiss shipper and I say absolutely no to a blatant romance on the show. Still, in earlier seasons there was a lot more subtext between the two characters and now there’s none. Subtext is just fine, bring that back, keep up the thus far superior writing of season 7 to season 6 and I’m a happy fan. Because the quality of my favorite show matters more to me than ships.

  28. Raven says:

I believe Morgan truly cares about Emily…That’s a given. I just don’t see the same intensity in her care for Morgan. I think Morgan/Prentiss would screw w/ a bunch of things on the show. It’s a bad idea

  29. Elle says:

Hotch and Prentiss fit! There’s no way to deny that.

But if they give Prentiss a love interest outside the team, the shipper’s pressure will slow down because she’s the only female agent who remains single.

  30. Shmoo says:

The only romance I would love to see within the team would be Prentiss/JJ. :) When in reality I just want Prentiss to have a serious relationship with a woman(past or present).

    • Elle says:

They do have chemistry but neither JJ and Emily are lesbians. They prefer men.

      • Reese says:

Actually no character’s sexuality has been explicitly stated ever (just because you date women, doesn’t mean you don’t also like/open to men etc). Also the idea of Prentiss as a lesbian was actually considered by the writers, and she (and Morgan) have the most canon subtext for non-heterosexuality.

        • Templar says:

Please, we have a lesbian agent on White Collar. Add one to CM and it will start a trend and before you know it the perception will be that women in law enforcement are all lesbians.

      • Tress says:

Actually, one of the executive producers Ed Banero (or something to that effect) said “we don’t even know that Prentiss is straight” =)

  31. Kelly says:

HP would also screw with a load of things on the show

Just leave it as it is… Subtext is great

  32. Hey says:

Sure, people meet their spouses all the time at work, but this is a different type of work — the kind where your coworkers’ lives can be on the line. These agents need to be objective and a romance within the team would compromise that.

I agree that Hotch and Prentiss LOOK good together, but I fail to see this supposed “subtext” some of the Hotch/Prentiss fanatics do. I think they are coworkers and friends who care for each other, just like everyone else on the team.

Another argument I have heard is that Hotch and Prentiss should be together because no one else could understand the demands of their job. I don’t agree with that. Just because Haley couldn’t handle Hotch’s profession, it doesn’t mean that no one can.

So yeah, all the characters deserve a little love in their lives, I just think it should be from people outside their team.

  33. kelsey123 says:

I’m for Hotch/Prentiss…but only because I’d love to see Morgan/Garcia. Those two have sizzling chemistry-on & off screen. Nothing would change, either, since they already flirt like crazy with each other. It would be nice to see all the BAU team have real lives. That cooking moment@ Rossi’s was golden.

  34. Janet Carlile says:

No interest in any team relationships!!!

  35. Herms says:

I really hope nothing will happen between them ! I don’t see any chemistry or special feelings between Hotch and Prentiss.
    So, NO.
I love to see Hotch interacting with his whole team, he’s protective of all of them.
That said, I would personally love to see more scenes between Hotch and Reid.

    • Ann says:

I do NOT care to see anything between Hotch and Prentiss. It does not work for me. I agree it is much better to see Hotch interacting with the team, and in particular, with Reid. I really like the scene on the plane in Elephant’s Memory where Hotch confronts Reid about his behavior on the case. This is at the end of the episode. I would like to see another encounter like this between these characters regarding something. Hotch is Unit Chief and he should get to show more of that side–being the boss and calling people on things when necessary. Reid has things going on and might be in a position to get called on something whether it is being late too often or his behavior otherwise. I’d take scenes like this any day over “office romance.” I watch CM for the plots and the characters solving cases as well as their relationship as co-workers and friends. I do NOT care to see their love lives explored.

      • Herms says:

I did not mean scenes where Hotch would call Reid out on his behavior (and come one, the only time he was late was in ‘corazon'; ‘Elephant’s Memory’ doesn’t count as Reid being late because they were called in the middle of the night. He arrived a little later than the others because he was at his clean cops meeting, but he wasn’t “late for work”). And 99 % of the time, there’s nothing to say against Reid’s behavior, yes when he’s too stressed he might handle things with some difficulties, but given the kind of jobs they do, he’s still extremely behaved and doesn’t have a problem with authority.
No, I meant scenes like the one we saw during the first three seasons where we saw their friendship and connection. I’m thinking about : ‘The Popular Kids’ (when Hotch talked to Reid about his nightmares and tried to appease his fears), ‘LDSK’, ‘Tabula Rasa’, ‘Damaged’, ‘Elephant’s Memory’ (because we saw that Hotch understood Reid better than the others and cared – he squeezed his shoulder as a gesture of comfort after gently advising him to catch the end of his movie), ‘Damaged’, ‘Revelations’ and so on.

I want to see that kind of scenes back, the one where they are bonding/connecting.

  36. Just says:

…or the writers could stick to their ‘no inter-team romance’ thing and let the fandom just write fanfiction, draw fanart and do their own thing to their heart’s content without more fuel for people to say “you can’t imagine these characters together because I say so!”

  37. miss scarlet says:

I’m not opposed to it, so to speak, but I’ve never really seen that particular pair before. After last season and early this season, I thought maybe Prentiss and Morgan or even Prentiss and Reid. But I definitely didn’t see Hotch and Prentiss at all.
That said, couples aren’t something I’d do lightly on this show and if they don’t happen I’d never be upset about it. I like the idea of pairings a bit, but it’s a dark show and I like that aspect of it. Romance kind of takes away from that darkness.

  38. Carol says:

I’m not a shipper, but I think Hotch and Prentiss could work as long as is well written and doesn’t get in the way of the show. They don’t need to be kissing each other all the time, they could be working normally and professionally and leave the relationship at home. Just aknowledge that they are together and move on with the stories. I think it could work because I see them as being able to separate home from work. At least, that’s what I believe based on their personalities. As for Morgan/Prentiss, I love their friendship and their closeness and I want to see that explored but I don’t see romance for them.

  39. Beate says:

I totally agree with Paget Brewster and Thomas Gibbson — a relationship between their characters would be inappropriate and very hard to write because it would mess up the chemistry of the complete team, and it would be SO wrong for Hotch to get involved with someone from his team, simply because he could no longer send that person into the field and stay objective if something went wrong. If the writers started to have both of them flirting all the time with each other, CM would probably turn into a second Bones in no time because you need to constantly fuel such “will they? won’t they” relationships and there is no way to bring such couples together without at least a little cliché. That was what destroyed Bones for me, and it very likely would do the same thing to Criminal Minds. If they are to get partners, bring in someone form outside the team. IN the case of Prentiss, they should her allow to get reaccustomed to her new old life first, and that takes time after all she went through.

  40. Angela says:

Thank you, Thomas Gibson (this is FLOODING with sarcasm) for giving people even a little bit of hope. Now, if Hotch and Prentiss show even the most basic human decency to each other that you’d show to a stranger, maybe even an enemy, some will see it as the show preparing the audience for a Hotch and Prentiss romance. Heaven forbid if they behave as friends.

But, a sincere thank you for pointing out that Hotch won’t get involved with someone he works with. I could come up with a bunch of reasons for why it shouldn’t happen. And, if they stay true to the characters, why it won’t happen. But, as far as I’m concerned, I don’t need to. I only need to give one reason. Hotch is the boss. I find it amazing that people say things like he doesn’t have chemistry with someone (usually in order to say he has chemistry with another team member). Or they say something like Paget Brewster said, that it doesn’t fit the show with all the terrible things that happen. Not that she doesn’t have a point. Or they’ll say it’ll mess up the dynamics of the team. And I agree with that. But, when people are speaking against the ship, rarely do they give the fact that Hotch is the boss of the team as a reason for why it should never happen. Why is that? I mean sure it happens, but I do believe there are bosses, leaders, supervisors, etc, who believe it’s a line you don’t cross. And, who practice that belief. Six seasons of this show and watching Hotch and how they’ve developed his character, makes me believe that he is one of those people. I personally haven’t seen any indication that either he or Prentiss have romantic feelings for each other. Or sexual feelings. To me, they don’t exist. But, even if they did, I don’t think Hotch would ever act on those feelings, because of the ethical line. I don’t believe Prentiss would either.

  41. zg says:

Hotch and Prentiss have no chemistry together. Their interaction specially during the Foyet arc is rather awkward.

  42. Jenny says:

In absolute agreement with! I am a Morgan and Prentiss shipper all the way!

  43. Mel says:

These two characters are so flawed and butchered up that they deserve each other and a chance at happiness!

It can be done in a tasteful way. No one is asking for full frontal sex scene. Save it for the last episode.

I’d rather see Hotch and Prentiss end up together than them (writers) bringing in some other character as a love interest for one of them.

    • Alissa says:

Following that logic, I should be able to break two mugs and mix up the shards, and get a shiny new mug, bigger and better than the one I had. And that’s simply not how it works. But if you find the right glue for each mug, they’ll resume a useful form.

And just because two characters are messed up doesn’t make them made for each other. Every character on the show have had some dints and rust added to their armor. That doesn’t mean that shoving any two of those characters together would work. You need ome chemistry. And with H/P there really isn’t any, not without seriously twisting canon facts or straight out ignoring them.

  44. Marie says:

Hell no!!!! That would be terrible for the show! And as Thomas said: Hotch Is not that type of guy!!

    • Mandy says:

He is still human. They do this all the time on jobs like that. The thing is, the people that work there and make that step, know to keep their mouths shut. Happens a lot! He’s still a lonely man and Emily is a lonely girl. Could easily happen in the real world.

  45. AT says:

I never understood the whole Hotch/Prentiss popularity. There’s frankly no evidence on the series to support it. It belongs in fan fiction. It’s one thing to like the idea of them personally (which is fine) and another to let fan fic trickle onto the show. Now Morgan and Garcia, that’s a different story. There’s always been something brewing between those two. As for Hotch and Prentiss? Absolutely nothing.

    • Birdie says:

Obviously there has to be something though because your own post points out their popularity. That indicates that a large segment sees something. You may not, but others definitely do.

      • Ash says:

Actually, all that does is point out that AT has come across fans that do support the pairing. It does nothing to indicate how large or small that section is. I’m pretty into the fandom, and I can’t say that the H/P fandomers are any more prevalent than any other group, though they are definitely the most vocal (with the possible exception of Morgan/Reid fans).

  46. Rhian says:

Dear God no!!! If they start writing romances into the show I’m switching off! Peripheral relationships with secondary characters (e.g. JJ) are fine but “romances” between lead characters would take this show on to a slippery slope. I’m happy with the Morgan/Garcia flirting, I definately do not need anything else!

  47. Ashley says:

The comment section for this article isn’t the wankfest that would have developed in some fandoms, and for that I give major kudos to everybody. No matter who you ship or don’t ship or if you ship at all, way to behave people! And nope, not a trace of sarcasm there.

That said, I myself am partial to Morgan/Prentiss though like many people I don’t have to see it on the show. I am more than happy to subside on subtext and inference. I’ve never really seen any chemistry between Hotch and Emily, and believe me I’ve looked, if only so I can understand the whole thing. Reid/Emily grosses me out but at least I can understand where their fans are coming from, and that’s just something I’ve never understood with H/P. Hell, if someone would care to explain it to me, I’d be much obliged.

    • NeverHP says:

      @Ashley, I don’t understand it either.

BTW what is a wankfest – nevermind i think i can figure it out, haha. Which fandoms have what you refer to as ‘wankfests’? I am curious to know, cuz i believe i have seen major wankfestness surrounding hp/nohp discussions elsewhere, soo…

  48. Kerry says:

I personally have never seen any chemistry with Hotch/Prentiss. I do like their professioanl relationship. There is no doubt respect there, but not the warmth or chemistry you see with other pairings.
I have to say Morgan/Prentiss has really grown on me lately, ever since the Doyle storyline and this season so far has been good for them, so if any pairing makes, sense t’s Morgan/Prentiss.
However, I hope the writers just keep with the subtle hints

    • Birdie says:

Actually, the Doyle storyline put me off of Morgan, a lot. I didn’t like that anger he showed last season towards Emily, not understanding why she did what she did. I can see Morgan and Emily in a sibling relationship, but that’s about it.

      • Alicia says:

ITA. He spent Prentiss’ whole “last” episode judging her for her actions with Doyle. I get that the writers were trying to make viewers “get over” Prentiss, but it just made Morgan look like a jerk.

      • hailey says:

If you watch properly, Morgan was hurt and upset which manifested itself as anger… you could see that by his reaction in her apartment when he was holding her passport… He was gutted she has gone and not told him the truth… Rossi hit the nail on the head as always….
People like classifying Morgan as angry.. it’s easy… but if you really watch the character, there are so many layers to him… he is passionate….
Plus look at his reaction to her coming back

        • Birdie says:

Sorry. I simply didn’t see that. All I saw was judgmental anger and it put me off the character. I understand Morgan’s anger, but it didn’t make me like him or think of him as anyone I could see paired romantically with Prentiss. As a friend? Yes, even a close one, but not as a best friend either.

          • hailey says:

You may not have seen it, but I totally did… Like said, it’s easy to put Morgan in the angry box…. Shemar plays him beautifully, and if you watch his facial reactions, you will see it… but I can see why people don’t want to see it.
His reaction to her when she was ‘dying’
His reaction in the counseling sessions
His dedicating his life to finding Doyle and protecting Declan
            His reaction to her return
All said so much about him and how he feels about her (whether as a friend or more)

  49. art says:

No inter-office romance please. This is not Grey’s Anatomy or Private Practice.

  50. Penny says:

Interesting that the subject is still worth writing an article about it. I was under the impression the whole Hotch/Prentiss thing is dead. I mean, when was the last time only the two of them had a scene together that wasn’t strictly work related? Season 5? IMO the writers avoided even the slightest scene that could lead the Hotch/Prentiss shippers to believe that they are and ever will be anything but co-workers. So not one friendship scene between Hotch and Pretiss in season 6 and so far in season 7, instead lots of Morgan/Prentiss scenes (so tiresome). The writers may have played around with the idea of a Hotch/Prentiss friendship in season 4 and 5, but gave it up to make Morgan Emilys BFF. So let’s see: TPTB are against it, Paget and Thomas are against it, the majority of the fans are against it- it’s never ever going to happen. That said I think Paget and Thomas have great chemistry and do look great together and it would be awsome if they had more screen time together (jut no inappropriate relationship). Thats why I vote for a deep appropriate relationship between Hotch and Prentiss.
