The TVLine-Up: TV Worth Watching This Friday

With the Fall TV season and its shiny, new wares still rolling out, we’re continuing to go daily with The TVLine-Up. (For those who must plan ahead, here is our complete Fall TV premieres calendar, plus I summarize what’s coming up the next day.) But right now, here’s what’s happening on….

5 pm MLB Playoffs (TBS) | Post-season play kicks off with the AL wild card Tampa Bay Rays visiting the Texas Rangers, followed by the Detroit Tigers braving the Bronx to take on my Yankees.

8 pm Nikita (The CW) | Nikita and Michael’s search for the mastermind of a defunct Division program known as P9 finds them crossing paths with Owen (guest star Devon Sawa), and they realize they share the same target: a doctor who also created the Regimen.

8 pm A Gifted Man (CBS) | In Week 2 of this supernatural-tinged medical drama, Rhys Coiro (Entourage) and Gbenga Akinnagbe (Good Wife‘s Pastor Isaiah) guest star as doctors while Tony Award nominee Raul Esparza plays a former boyfriend of the late Anna’s.

9 pm Hugh Laurie: Let Them Talk – A Celebration of New Orleans Blues (PBS) | This Great Performances installment finds the multi-talented House star sharing a “very personal journey” into the heart and soul of the blues and jazz that grew out of New Orleans at the beginning of the last century. Laurie sings a selection of tunes, accompanying himself on piano or guitar and backed by legends such as Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and Sir Tom Jones.

9 pm Supernatural (The CW) | The broken wall in Sam’s head subjects him to hallucinations, Bobby worries that Dean will crumble from the stress of seeking Cas and keeping his eye on Sam, and Castiel struggles with the burdens of his new job. (Oh, cry me a River Styx.)

9 pm Fringe (Fox) | John Pyper-Ferguson (Brothers & Sisters) plays an expert on serial killers who is recruited by the Olivias (Olivi?) to track down his alt-self, who on the Other Side has been on quite the rampage. Peter, meanwhile, finds a new way to tap on Walter’s shoulder — for better or for worse.

9 pm CSI: NY (CBS) | The death of an awkward teen leads the CSIs to a sexy punk rocker (played by Hellcats hottie Aly Michalka and her abs).

9 pm Jessie (Disney) | Series premiere: Debby Ryan (The Suite Life on Deck) stars as a Texas lass who moves to NYC, where she becomes a nanny to a famous movie director and his ex-supermodel wife.

10 pm Haven (Syfy) | Season 2 finale: When the dead rise up, Audrey, Nathan and Duke are walloped with shocking revelations and face a battle that threatens to split the town forever. Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) guest stars.

10 pm Blue Bloods (CBS) | Danny is put on modified assignment and subject to an Internal Affairs investigation when he shoots a fellow cop who failed to identify himself quickly enough.

Coming up this weekend: Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly) hosts Saturday Night Live, and a new Doctor Who…. Showtime’s Homeland premieres, plus the returns of Dexter, Hung and How to Make It in America.

I’ll be watching Supernatural. Best show on television. End of story.

  3. Amy says:

I think the plural of ‘Olivia’ might be ‘Olivii’

  4. M says:

The Tampa Bay Rays lost the “Devil” in their name a few years ago, before they became a good team.

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

Ha, old habits die hard. I still refer to my alma mater the Orangemen, and probably always will.

    • ty says:

I am a Red Sox fan, but as a baseball fan loved the action that went on Wednesday night. The Sox losing with 2 outs in the 9th. The Rays coming back from 7 runs down to tie the game and then winning in extra innings. The Braves losing a heartbreaker in extra innings. I Can’t wait for the playoffs. I am pulling for a Rays – Cardinals World Series. How can you not love the fight these two teams showed in coming back from 8 and 9 games back to make the playoffs?

  5. King says:

That Blue Bloods episode sounds and looks (from promos) like an episode that happen to Danny(!) on CSI: NY 7 years ago.

  6. bethany says:

    FRINGE! That is all.

  7. Sara says:

Oooohhh… Hugh Laurie singing? This is the first I’ve heard of this pbs special! How can I resist? … as much as i love Fringe, I might have to switch on pbs instead.

  12. Lisa says:

Supernatural will always be my first choice regardless of when it’s on or what it’s up against. I’m about to stop even PVRing Fringe unless they bring back Peter in a significant way.

    • davey says:

I just don’t get those people who bitch and complain about Peter being “erased” from Fringe (for the time being). We ALL know he is coming back in the next few episoeeds so just calm the frack down about Peter being gone! You actually think they would completely write one of the main characters off their show all together? Have faith in the Fringe Team peeps!

  13. anna says:

  18. Rebecca says:

I have been a Supernatural fan from the beginning and I can easily admit last season wasn’t its best (way too uneven), but I was happy with last week’s premiere and the direction they appear to be going this season. I was worried that last season’s meh storylines were going to continue this year. And for the record, I love Fringe too, but I need Peter back ASAP.

  19. Elizabeth says:

    I love Haven!!
If Syfy doesn’t renew it I might have to break up with them.

Excited for finale & an added bonus of Tahmoh Penikett.

  26. Renee says:

Ok I have never seen Haven, but you might just have gotten me with “Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) guest stars.”

I think he’s the sexiest man alive.

  27. trackerem says:

matt, thanks for the pic(!) & crying a river…. how about sobbing a universe?! doesn’t really cover my emotions for the boys & castiel!

  34. V says:

Have you heard ANYTHING about renewing Haven? I love it!!

  35. Gerald says:
