Fall TV Preview

Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder on Damon's Big Surprise, Elena's Happiness and Twisty Bromance

With Ripper Stefan out on the rampage, Damon was left with quite the predicament in the season premiere of The CW’s The Vampire Diaries (Thursdays at 8/7c). Not only did his bro kill his girlfriend — RIP Andie Star — but Stefan also left behind his lady love with Damon. Will Damon take advantage of his new closeness with Elena? Or will he be too busy grieving his reporter pal?

TVLine spoke with Ian Somerhalder about what’s going on in Damon’s head and what Stefan’s ugly side will mean for Damon and Elena.

TVLINE | Will Andie’s death have any effect on Damon?
She was fun and beautiful and smart. He actually liked Andie a lot, regardless of the fact that he compelled her to do and say what he wanted her to do. She still had a mind of her own, which is awesome. So he’s upset, but really what Andie’s death is about is telegraphing to Damon the actual lengths to which Stefan will go. That surprises the hell out of Damon. It’s a setback for him. It’s quite the annoyance.

Vampire Diaries Hot Shots: Stefan Suits Up!

TVLINE | Elena is still hell-bent on going after Stefan. Where does that leave Damon?
Elena’s a very strong-willed young individual. Elena’s going to do whatever Elena wants to do. She’s very persuasive, and I mean that in the most positive of senses. He’s going to try and help her in any way he can. He truly wants to be able to help her. He wants her to be happy. There’s nothing Damon won’t do for Elena’s happiness.

TVLINE | Having seen how dark Stefan can get, does that make Elena see Damon differently?
It doesn’t hurt Damon. It has the ability to make Elena and Damon bond, and it allows Damon to have to really protect her, even from his own brother. So yes, it has to have a profound effect on the way she perceives Damon. Absolutely. It makes her more connected to him by the virtue of the fact that he’s actually become a sounding board. He’s very well-versed on this type of behavior. He has the ability to help her understand what’s going on. That comes in handy in a very big way.

TVLINE | They didn’t really address the kiss in the premiere. Does he even remember it?
No, he remembers. You find out later he remembers. What’s funny is that some were saying, “How was this passionate kiss?” and I was thinking, “I don’t know if anyone noticed, but Damon was pale and sweaty and coughing up blood.”

Vampire Diaries (Awesome) Season 3 Premiere: Five Most Shocking Moments!

TVLINE | It wasn’t the sexiest of situations.
Exactly! It wasn’t the sexiest of situations. I wouldn’t say it came from a place of passion. I would say it probably came from a place more of compassion.

TVLINE | Is there a part of Damon that feels like he’s being strung along by Elena?
I don’t think so at all. Elena’s intentions are nothing but pure. Elena’s intentions have nothing to do with Damon, really. She cares about Damon, but she’s not playing him in any way, shape or form. I can’t speak directly for [executive producers] Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec], but that’s not Elena’s nature.

TVLINE | What’s coming up for Damon and Alaric?
The bromance has some twists and turns. At the end of the day, Alaric is Damon’s bro. It’s gotta be difficult dealing with Damon.

Matt’s Inside Line: Scoop on Grey’s, Castle, House, Vampire Diaries, Good Wife and More

TVLINE | I hear he’s not too keen on the fact that Damon and Elena are growing so close.
He’s not too keen because he’s a smart man, and he feels a responsibility to protect her. He feels a responsibility to make sure she OK, and Damon doesn’t even pretend to make the best decisions in his life. He just does it. Alaric having that trepidation and concern for Elena’s well-being is very, very well-justified. I couldn’t argue with Ric, but Damon could until the cows come home.

TVLINE | How will Damon be letting out some of his frustration?
Damon’s way of letting out frustration and excess energy is not that different than anybody’s. [But] what’s different about it is that his is quite destructive at times, and it leads to someone getting hurt. Because of that, Elena won’t stand for it. She wants nothing to do with it. So that makes it difficult for him. He’s frustrated to no end on many levels, and now he can’t even go out and get his frustration out or express himself the way he’s used to. The blood is what makes it easier to cope with. So, it’s a tough time for Mr. Damon.

  2. Tanya says:

Love this! Love this show, love the characters, and love, love, love Ian. Can’t wait. This season is going to be awesome!

  3. Lauren says:

I’m glad he doesn’t thank that kiss was as passionate as everyone else. It made me think of Parks and Rec, when Andy kisses April when she’s sick and supposedly asleep, and then afterwards is all, ‘Oh my god, you’re all sweaty. That was really gross. Ugh.’

  4. Kiki says:

Thank God Damon is not chasing after Elena anymore, crying and trying to be the better man. Let him be himself and drink lots of bourbon with Alaric while chasing girls and occasionally snapping necks.

  5. iris says:

well, i think damon and elena should be together at some point, but i can barely expect that as soon as stefan’s out of the picture that elena will turn to the other brother. I know that deep down, she knows that she loves him, and that when she realized that, damon may have to keep a safe distance from his little brother.

    • Fan says:

I think last season’s was the “kiss of death” to be honest: bad if you do it, bad if you don’t. I think the worse thing the show could do is to pair up Damon with Elena but there’s really no other direction for them to go.

      • i wish says:

i agree, the sexual chemistry can remain but dont think elena and damon should ever be a couple. absolutly love the show and season 3 is even better.
well done to all thise involved.

  6. Guest says:

Now this interview sounds more like the Damon that I love.
Also, I love the fact that Alaric and Damon will continue to
    be good friends.

  7. Sue says:

Absolutely love this Interview! He understands his character perfectly! Love it XD

  8. Sherry says:

I love Damon. I really miss and love the old Damon. Remember him the tough badass that didn’t give a rats a-s about anyone. The guy who was scary yet really hot and sexy. The Damon who would kill someone just because he wanted and would sleept with beautiful women just because he wanted to. I want my old manwhore/badass Damon back. This whimpy babysitter has got to go he to hot for that crap.

  9. anna claxton says:

I love Damon and Elena, I am an older vampire diaries lover. They are the most awesome actors. I have never seen so much chemistry between two people. Damon is so cool with his since of humor, I like seeing he and Elena slowly getting closer and closer. I love the Delana relationship. Damon almost seems human, He plays his character well. Elena is the best too. I can’t wait for more.

  10. Anon says:

I think TVD is brilliant and can’t wait for S3 to start in UK. Ian Somerhalder is great as Damon (also incredibly hot) and looks like we may be getting the old Damon back just a bit.
