Kevin McKidd Says Grey's Anatomy 'Has Written Cristina Into a Box' - and He's Thrilled

There are a number of ways Cristina’s abortion dilemma could play out on Grey’s Anatomy this fall, but one thing appears fairly certain: If she terminates the pregnancy, her marriage to Owen is kaput.

“That’s a very good point,” reasons the baby daddy’s portrayer, Kevin McKidd. “Is it just a bump in the road, or is it a real block in their relationship? That’s addressed in the early part of the season.”

The very early part. As series creator Shonda Rhimes recently revealed to TVLine, the question of whether Cristina goes through with the abortion is answered by the end of the two-hour season opener, airing Sept. 22.

McKidd acknowledges that “the writers have written Cristina into a bit of a box,” but adds that that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “[T]he really good juicy stuff gets going when they go, ‘OK, we’re going to make this as difficult as we possibly can for this couple. They fought to get together, with the Teddy of it all in Season 6 and then the PTSD, and now it’s like slam, we’re going to give you the hardest problem of all.’

“It just gives us an opportunity to tell a better story and a more important story,” McKidd continues. “And it’s really tough. Network shows aren’t dealing with that topic of conversation about abortion. I think it’s cool that they’re not skirting around it, they’re going head on into it.”

You all realize this is just a TV show, right?

  2. Jessica says:

So you ladies think she should have an unnecessary surgery just in case her birth control, which is obviously working just fine, fails? She isn’t using abortion as a form of birth control, she’s saying it would be a last resort. Apparently we stuck th “pro-life” nerve here! Stop judging people and they’re decisions don’t affect you, so back off!

  3. eviltwit says:

Easy way out for this situation? Christina decides to have the baby, but obviously doesn’t really want it, then has a miscarriage. I could see them going this way in a heartbeat.

  4. Maddy says:

I think Christina will end up having a miscarriage so Christina essentially gets what she wanted which was not have a baby, but Owen will still love her because she didn’t lose the baby on purpose.

  5. Rachel says:

I think she should have the baby, give it up for adoption or give it to Owen and then leave him for being inflexible! Huh huh huh? Or not. Just a thought! LOL!
On a side note: Having had one ectopic pregnancy and losing that fallopian tube, she must be one fertile woman to have gotten pregnant again. Not to say that it couldn’t happen just that she’s 50% less likely to do so.

  6. ana says:

Wow lady… Your heart is pure stone! I just hope God will never test you on that issue… I pray that He can give you a merciful and loving heart. God bless you!

  7. Firas says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. Well said.

  8. Firas says:

That could actually happen. You see in an interview with Keven McKidd he said that you think the matter is put to rest, but it’s not. What you said could make sense. I actually think she’s going to tell him I’ll have the baby if you hire Meredith back (because if you saw the promo you’d know that she is going to be fired).

First, Ariziona didn’t want kids she was scared of the risk of losing a child due to her job seeing children die all the time…and losing her brother when she was young… a woman who cares so deeply for children as her character does she desires motherhood on some level but her fear kept her from exploring it as an option until her love for Kallie showed her she could do it… and the statement of her being selfish because of. The father wanting to be apart of it wasn’t to show her being selfish the point was lost if that was what you took from it… it was to show 2 things her natural human reaction of jealiously of having to share the relationship with another not just with the child but callie aswell… much as some adoptive and birth parents go through at the begining of an open adoption… 2nd it show her growing maternal motherhood for the child… not many new moms want to share time with their new baby… okay now Christina and Owen… the whole point of this story is to see where Christina is as a character… when she got pregnant in the 1 season she wasn’t married she was starting out in her career and had tons of reason to not want to go through with it…. and she was upset after the miscarriage so that show that apart of her was doubting the abortions… why I guess we might find out. Now she is married further in her career path… and if she truely doesn’t want to be a mother we will see why and experience it through her seeing different view maybe then our own… and if Owen truely loves her as Arizona did for Kallie he will find understanding for her but that doesn’t make him bad for the emotions he has expressed he know just as much as chrtina doesn’t want children he does… and it is just as hard for to let go of that desire as it would be for Christina to change her mind… all we have seen is the frist emotion reactions to the thought… Fear on both parts. I am exisited to see how this will play out… I love that this show goes where most won’t… the way they showed the differance of what a real marriage of true love even without legal papers is compared to want a legal marriage really is just a paper with rights attached to it because their really marriage started on a post it. I love this show and will love it even if she does or doesn’t go through with it… because either way she is showing a side of someones story and viewpoint…

No method of birth control is 100% effective, accidents do happen even to intelligent professionals. And keep things in perspective people; this is FICTION remember. There is no baby.

  11. jamie says:

I just want to see a redhead Korean baby………..

  12. Nina says:

I totally respect women who dont want children. I really do. Though I cannot identify with them. But I do respect them. But this case is different. She is pregnant AGAIN! If she was SOOOOO sure about not wanting kids, why in gods name didn’t she have her tubes tied??? You cant use abortion as birth control. Its not just about her any longer. This issue involves two other human beings: The father and the unborn child. You have to stand by your responsibility. And you don’t abort your husbands baby. Not in a healthy and stable marriage. And by the way: I DONT believe she does not want kids. She is just scared. Because of her ‘daddy issues, her crappy mother and because she is so ambitious. Why did the writers confront her with kids during the seasons? Bailey’s baby. The girl who’s mother died? Her own pregnancy and the way she felt after she had the miscarriage? Christina is good with kids. Not in a traditional way. But she would be a good mother. And she said: If I have a baby I’ll love it. And then Owen said: Thats the problem. that you’ll love it. She is scared of loving a child because of separation anxiety caused in her own childhood. I have watched Christina Yang from day one and she has changed. But she must learn to involve her partner into her decisions. Owen never said: YOU HAVE to have this baby. All he wanted was to discuss it as partnership. But she didn’t even care. Instead she came home and told him she made an appointment to terminate the pregnancy. What was he supposed to do? Be happy and party? He did right in kicking her out. You cannot treat your husband who loves you that way. I think she will have the abortion, because she is selfish and so scared. It will be hard for her to find her way back to him. But he will forgive her. It will take a long time. But he will. Because he loves her.Love does not end with an evening having a fight……

  13. Amber says:

I am so disappointed in this show. A married woman, with a supportive husband, and a good job should not have an abortion. If she doesn’t want to be a mom, place the baby for adoption. I am now done with GA, nobody on there has any moral character.

  14. shelby says:

yang tubes tied or IUD stat.
