Emmys 2011: Who Should Win Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series? Take Our Poll!

Get More: Awards, Emmys, Glee, Polls

Will Jane Lynch have to take a break from Emmy hosting duties to give an acceptance speech as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series? Only time will tell. But it’s interesting to note that in three of the last four years, the statuette has been taken home by a scene-stealing funny lady from a lower-profile series: My Name Is Earl‘s Jaime Pressly, Samantha Who?‘s Jean Smart, and Pushing Daisies‘ Kristin Chenoweth. And that might bode well for five-time Emmy winner Betty White, nominated for TVLand’s Hot in Cleveland.

Lynch and White will face stiff competition from a pair of Modern Family mamas, a versatile SNL comedienne, and a loopy 30 Rock star — all of whom have been nominated in this category at least once before, without a single win to their credit.

What would you do if you had the power to send one of these fine actresses to the podium when the Emmys are handed out Sept.18? Take our poll below to vote for your favorite — TVLine voting closes Sept. 10, so act now! — then hit the comments to justify your pick!

Every day for the next month, we’ll launch another “Who Should Win” Emmy poll, so come back to TVLine.com every day to weigh in on who’s most worthy of TV’s biggest honor, and to stay up to speed on all our races, follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV!

    • Sofia Vergara needs to win, just for that Halloween episode alone. I really hope that’s the one she submitted.

      • I also love both, but I voted for Sofia. She makes me laugh out loud without even speaking sometimes. Love her.

  • The most boring category of them all. Almost as boring as Betty White.

My vote goes to Sofia. But I’d like to see Julie win as well. Just please spare us another Jane Lynch win.

      • As good as Jane Lynch is, her character was totally annoying this year. She’s good! She’s bad! She’s gone! She’s insane! Whatever. The other Jane is the most underrated person on 30 Rock, and without her that show wouldn’t work. Give it to her for sparing us even more minutes of Tracy Morgan.

  • Ugh! I don’t want to vote for anyone is this catergory. I guess, if my hand was forced, I would go with Julie Bowen.
Jane Lynch had a bad year on Glee. She just wasn’t given good material.
Jane Krakowski didn’t stand out at all this season.
Sofia Vergara is beyond irritating on MF. She is the worst part of the show for me. All the laugh involving her are at her expense and have nothing to do with any “talent” she might have.
Betty White? Come on! Does anyone even watch that show?
Kristen Wiig is great in movies, but I don’t love most of her work on SNL and it hasn’t been that great lately.
This catergory was so thin this year. I wish that the ladies from Community, particularily Allison Brie had got noms.

    • I agree on Sofia. She and Manny are my least favorite part because they are so one dimensional. Out of Julie and Sofia, Julie definitely deserves to win. She and Ty are fantastic together.

I have seen Hot in Cleveland, but it seems like Betty’s whole purpose on the show is to be old lady who says dirty things.

Comment by Kate – August 18, 2011 09:40 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I was really impressed with Jane Krakowski during the live episode. I’d be happy if she or Julie Bowen won.

I love Betty White, but all of the attention lately seems to be stemming from the recent “I love Betty White” resurgence.

Kristen’s great, but she won’t win.

I hate Sue Sylvester. For anyone who hates Jane Lynch and thinks she is a one-trick pony, I suggest you watch Party Down.

Comment by Molly – August 18, 2011 12:03 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I dunno, Sofia was pretty funny in the “Manny Get Your Gun” episode. But I will agree that Julie Bowen is more talented, and to make twitchy, neurotic, perfectionist Claire not only funny but sympathetic is quite a feat.

Comment by davey – August 18, 2011 01:41 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Yeah. Most of the Emmy categories had a few randoms and a few criminal oversights, but this is one in which I don’t think any one of the contenders really deserves to be there. Give me Allison Brie, Busy Phillips, Aubrey Plaza and Mayim Bialik – the other five can fight over the last slot.

  • Mandy… a lot of us watch that show for one BIG reason. Betty! She is so funny. Those of us who watched GG growing up love to see her still have the chops. I hope she wins!

Comment by Jon – August 18, 2011 09:28 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I agree with you entirely, Jon. I grew up with Betty. Some people talk about her “hype”… well it has lasted the last 30-some-odd-years for a reason. She still can make me pee my pants laughing! Estelle Getty was actually my favorite golden girl, but Betty was a close second.

Comment by Kim – August 18, 2011 12:05 PM PDT  Reply To This Post

  • i’m rooting for jane lynch. the submited the funeral episode and she was outstanding on that one, but it’s true that she wasn’t given good material this season
if lynch doesn’t win, i want julie bowen, she’s much better than sofia vergara in my opinion. sofia this season was too much, a little bit over the top
busy philips should have made the list, that was a big snub

Comment by lau – August 18, 2011 09:30 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Look, I love Jane Lynch as much as the next gay lady, but if she wins best supporting actress in a COMEDY on the COMEDIC merit of the FUNERAL episode, I’m going to laugh.
      I mean cry.
      I mean… laugh?
      Wait, what’s the difference anymore?

Comment by Grace – August 18, 2011 10:36 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Even though the Glee backlash is still in full effect I’d pick Jane Lynch to win (since no Busy Philipps nomination). Kristen submitted the SNL with Jane Lynch as host as that will probably help Jane win who submitted the dramatic “Funeral” episode. Would be nice to see a Modern Family lady take it but Sofia submitted poorly-that episode where all she does is ride a bike. But have a feeling Emmy can’t resist seeing Betty White on stage one more time.

  • I hope that Julie Bowen wins it. Along with Ed O’Neill are the absolute glue behind the entire show.
Sofia Vergara is also very good, but Bowen should get the nod. Without her (JB), the show would not be nearly as good.

Comment by J. Norman – August 18, 2011 09:39 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Add on;

Although I think that Julie Bowen is most deserving, I suspect that Jane Lynch has a better than 50-50 shot at winning.

Betty White is (still) riding the “Betty White Mania” wave”

Jane Krakowski – I doubt it

      Kristin Wiig – No chance

  • Betty White is hilarious on Hot In Cleveland, though admittedly, I have a soft spot for Jane Krakowski.

Comment by Kristen – August 18, 2011 09:39 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • The thing that annoys me is that Betty White will get a nomination because she’s Betty White, not because she was particularly great, and it will shut out another deserving actress. I love Betty but the hype and the worship needs to tone it down and get a grip on reality.

Comment by Jim – August 18, 2011 09:41 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Krakowski is way overdue, and had a brilliant season with two black swans, the Carvel short grift, and the Connecticut torture porn, all while being filmed from the shoulders up because of her pregnancy.

  • Love Betty White bit Sofia has more than earned this award!

Comment by chris – August 18, 2011 09:57 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Jane Krakowski deserved this award the past two years, but she was such a non-presence on 30 Rock this season that I have trouble saying she deserves it this time.

As surprising as it might sound, I think Kristen Wiig’s the most deserving of the women assembled here. Lynch had a terrible season, White’s show/character are so one-note and old-fashioned, and I think both Modern Family women are giving limited performances, though I’d certainly take Vergara over Bowen/Lynch/Whtie. Yep, Wiig for me. That would be so fantastic for her, if she were the first SNLer to get an acting Emmy for SNL.

Of course, the rightful winner is Alison Brie. Her one-two punch of her great work in “Mixology Certification” and then the two-part season finale was such an epic year for her.

Comment by Soso – August 18, 2011 10:20 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I thought Jane Lynch totally deserved her Emmy last year, but this year she was given far inferior stuff to work with, and you could tell she knew it. Wiig is the funniest person on a non-funny season of SNL, Betty White is an icon who was nominated because of who she is, not because of her work this season. Vergara is overrated… but Julie Bowen has always been chronically underrated in everything she’s done, and she deserves this one.

Comment by KMG – August 18, 2011 11:11 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • She doesn’t stand a chance, but Jane Krakowski really deserves this award. She’s consistently been the funniest part of 30 Rock.

That being said, in my mind I already gave it to Busy Phillips.

Comment by Tyler – August 18, 2011 11:13 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I’m a big gleek but I don’t want to see Jane Lynch with another Emmy, she barely appeared on Glee this season and besides she is the host.
I really want to see Modern Family as the big winner this time. I think the show will win (again) for Best Comedy Series. The show absolutely deserves it. But my vote is for Sofia Vergara. It’s great that the whole cast is nominated but is a shame they all compete with each other.

Comment by Ceci – August 18, 2011 11:27 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Like you I’m a BIG Gleek, but I found Sue Sylvester the worst part of the show this past season. I love Jane Lynch, but she definately doesn’t deserve the Emmy this year.

  • Since the Community ladies weren’t nominated, nor was Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Rec, my vote would go to Jane Krakowski (long overdue) or Kristin Wiig. Jane Lynch had a one-note year on Glee, Modern Family is just not funny, and I’ve certainly had enough of Betty White.

  • Im still peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeved that Busy Phillips (Cougar Town) was snubbed, after winning the Critics Choice Award as well!! What will it take for EMMY’s to recognise that show!

Comment by Raheem Fathe – August 21, 2011 04:38 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I voted for Julie just for her meltdowns as Claire.

I would be quite happy for Sofia also just for the malaprops and killing rats with a shovel and leaving the heads behind as a scare tactic for the other rats (?!) before church in her white dress. If only I could do that.

Love Jane Krakowski but I don’t see her winning.

Please no more Jane Lynch and Kristin Wiig with all due respect.

Love Betty but seriously she does not need any more Emmys.

  • They are all amazing! Jane Lynch is very good as Sue, Jane Krakowski is very good as Jenna, Julie Bowen is very good as Claire, Betty White is very good as Elka, Sofia Vergara is very good as Gloria and Kristen Wiig is very good as…alot of people!! I think this is the hardest category this year to pick a winner…I mean you got Jane, who won last year and also the host, also very funny mom’s Julie and Sofia, quirky and funny Jane K., hilarious Kristen and the one and only Betty White!! I would not want to be in the Academy’s shoes for this category…
I think…Sofia Vergara should win, runner-ups (in order): Jane Lynch, Betty White, Julie Bowen, Jane Krakowski and Kristen Wiig

  • Julie Bowen! She’s so underrated. She’s funny and sexy! I’ve loved her ever since I saw her in Boston Legal. I really hope she wins. She definitely gets my vote here!

Comment by Stephen S. – September 8, 2011 02:48 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I don’t really mind who wins the Emmy, they are all hilarious. But, I believe that Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara have more options to win than the rest. First of all, Lynch won last year and she’s the host. If Betty White wins wouldn’t be surprising at all, but “Hot in Cleveland” isn’t a blockbuster (if she wins is just because she’s BETTY WHITE!!). Both Wiig and Krakowski aren’t winning, all pols are clear about that.

In my opinion, it’s Vergara’s year (Modern Family, The Smurfs, New Year’ Eve). She’s really having a blast!. But, Bowen definitely is a TV veteran and she’s outstanding in the 2nd season. I have a hunch that Julie will win this year.

  • Duh – Julie Bowen is the breakout star here! And with what i believe to be her Emmy win, my hope is that the writers of Modern Family will give her the kind of opportunities that make her outstanding talent as obvious to television watchers as it is to me. Julie Bowen!!!!
