Emmys 2011: Who Deserves the Supporting Actor In a Comedy Trophy? Take Our Poll!

If you thought the men of Modern Family had a strong grip on Emmy’s Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy category back in 2010, then this year it’s nothing short of a stranglehold. Four of the six actors in the 2011 race — Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, and last year’s winner Eric Stonestreet — hail from ABC’s uproarious Wednesday-night sitcom. Only 2009 Emmy winner Jon Cryer (nominated for the sixth straight year for Two and a Half Men) and 2011 Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer (up for the second straight year for Glee) keep this category from being redubbed Best Supporting Actor from the Pritchett-Dunphy Clan.

What would you do if you had the power to send one of these fine gentlemen to the podium when the Emmys are handed out Sept.18? Take our poll below to vote for your favorite — TVLine voting closes Sept. 10, so act now! — then hit the comments to justify your pick!

Every day for the next month, we’ll launch another “Who Should Win” Emmy poll, so come back to TVLine.com every day to weigh in on who’s most worthy of TV’s biggest honor, and to stay up to speed on all our races, follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

    Eric Stonestreet all the way.

  2. Jim says:

If they gave out awards for singers who hide their teeth while singing, Chris would win hands down. What the heck is with that?!

  3. S. Tayler says:

I’m saying Chris Colfer for many reasons:
    1) He is truly hilarious and he plays a really amazing character. His character is very sassy and is very funny, though he has his moments of course. Like every character should you know?
    2) He’s an amazing actor…amazing…flawless actor. There is nothing wrong with his acting.
    3) He saved my life. Saved my life, yes I said that. I have really BAD(You could say suicidal) thoughts and just thinking of Chris Colfer makes me happy and it makes me smile. If it wasn’t for this fearless man I wouldn’t be here. His acting, his voice, his humor, his laugh…I mean come ON. This man has been through so much and he’s where he’s always wanted to be…and he’s really young too. I call that an accomplishment. He’s my idol for that and so many more reasons.
    4) I mean just look at him…Need I say MORE?
Please just say your opinions without being dickheads guys. Seriously keep your bad comments to yourself. The world would be a happier place.

    • Justin says:

When I mentioned that Chris Colfer shouldn’t be on this list and that Neil Patrick Harris should, I was told, by multiple glee fangirls, that I was being homophobic. I don’t think I’ve ever facepalmed so hard in my life, but it’s actually a true testament to NPH’s acting skills. How is he not on this list?

    • Jane says:

Please don’t run yourself down. Colfer didn’t save your life – YOU did, when you chose to focus on the positive things rather than those that make you miserable.

  4. Zahra says:

Uhm. Did you read my post?
Thanks for telling me all about Chris’ life, and telling me things I already knew about him. It was a great update. I haven’t seen any interview with him. Was he bullied? I didn’t know that, because I didn’t see his Piers Morgan interview, or his two interviews on Ellen, or his It gets Better video. Didn’t see those at all.
And he’s a great comedic writer? Oh no, didn’t know that either! He is writing two children’s books, are you kidding me? And you can pre-order them? I did so not know that.

Seriously read a person’s post before attacking them. I know all what you said about him. I am a very big fan and supporter of Chris. Thank you very much.

  5. mahsa says:

when was Jon Cryer funny ?
As much as I love Modern Family and they’re all great but Chris is an amaaaazing actor and the material he had wasn’t very comedy this season but even in the smallest of scenes he had a great presence and amazing wit .

  6. Dan says:

I like Glee and Modern Family but that being said the Emmy HAS to go to Ty there is no one funnier on TV right now I feel, and I feel it really should go for a comedic performance since this is a comedy award, Glee should be in the drama category anyways so much angst! Is Chris a good actor yes, but for me he is not the most important actor on that show in the sense in if Kurt was gone I would still watch, so many other characters I feel are more important. Yes he has saved lives but that not what the Emmy is for.

  7. Ru perera says:

Chris colfer totally deserves the emmy. his brave performance as kurt hummel in glee is something that an upcoming actor usually avoides if he thinks about an acting career without “lables”. leave alone openly being gay! his wit in his outstading performance and how comfortably he reflects the misery anxiety, loneliness and surpressed desires of an “outcast” character, (esp. his first kiss) is truly, amazingly outstanding!

Dont be stupid because each actor submit one episode, and that the episode that the academy will take in mind, not because there are more Modern Family actor they will get more chance.

I’m a Glee fan, and also a Modern Family fan, but I can see 3 MF actor above Chris with better chance to win.

and If one of the MF actor win, I’ll be back here and write, “I told you so”

Modern Family For best Series, Suporting actor and actress :D

    I LOVE Chris Colfer!!!!!!!! :) :)

  11. Nsnow says:

    Chis colfer rocks

  12. idgaf says:

Um why is everyone arguing about who wins? Personally I feel that Chris Colfer should win, but this is just a poll, we don’t decide who wins. There’s no need to talk badly about someone else. Jealousy is a bad thing and just because you’re not famous and successful doesn’t mean you need other people to feel bad about themselves. And besides, it’s not like it’s going to affect us as to whoever wins. Please get a life and do something productive…

  13. Lizzie says:

OOOOO SHUT UP PEOPLE! I will be nice andttle this little debacle for you:

CHRIS COLFER DESERVES TO WIN…AND HE WILL.

  14. BIOA says:

As with the majority of people posting to this poll, I really hope Chris wins. He’s phenomenal. Yes his storyline wasn’t super comedic this season – but like many people have said it’s best performance IN a comedy – not best Comedic performance. Chris, especially being as young as he is, is a master of subtly – Kurt can say more with one glance than most people (including myself haha) can with an entire soliloquy!

Chris gives nuance to a part that could easily be very two dimensional. Any fan of the show will be able to tell you that Chris has given input about the portrayal of Kurt has been so positive (such as changing the prom scene to make Kurt’s decision to return his own rather than Blaine’s idea). Kurt can also be wickedly funny when the opportunity arises. Furthermore, not only can he act but he is also an accomplished dancer and singer. (He also is good at about 1901282 other things but I’m only thinking about his role on Glee at the moment.) The other actors in the category are all great, they are – but in terms of the best performance, hands down the Emmy should go to Chris Colfer.

  15. Alanna Reed says:

To all of you who are saying Chris Colfer doesn’t deserve this… well guess what, your all a bunch of assholes. Quit hating on him, He’s only 21 and he has a golden globe, and he’s one of the 100 most influential people. I’d like to see all you haters do that. Anybody who watches glee knows that its about being who you are and not being afraid to show it. I bet half of you who are hating on him, just don’t like him because hes gay. Well you know kindly keep you opinions to yourself, normally I don’t care, but Chris Colfer is a huge inspiration to be. Respect him. He’s amazing, and if you knew anything about him, you would know hes like one of the most funny guys ever. Just quit Hating please, its not cool. Good Luck Chris! I hope you get it, you deserve it! <3

    • Mike says:

Just because you think he doesnt deserve this doesn’t mean you are hating? Does that seem like a mature response? I am a Glee fan and I think he is a good actor but for this award I think the Modern Family guys are much more deserving. Have you won a Golden globe or done what he has done? You can’t force people to like someone, thats just intolerant. Is he a good actor? Yes Funny? no

      • Alanna Reed says:

Well I’m sick and tired of people hating on him, like some of these comments are really rude. Personally I want Chris to win, but if one of the other guys win, I’m not gonna hate them and say they didn’t deserve it, cause they probably did. I don’t watch modern family, and I stopped watching 2 and half men after they got rid of Charlie Sheen, but if they were to win, thats awesome. I’m not trying to get them to like him, I just want the hate comments to stop. All the people in this category deserve it but they were nominated. Maybe Chris’ character isn’t funny, but Chris is. Believe me, its hilarious with some of his tweets I read. lol But they all deserve it

  16. Dani says:

Okay for all these people saying Chris Colfer doesn’t deserve to win, the way to break this down is easy. Yes, glee may be a mix of comedy and drama and yes chris may do a little more of the dramatics then he does comedy but that shoudln’t matter if that is how the emmy’s classified glee and that’s where they chose to place him for nomination. The second part of this is to take a second and think if any of those other nominees could pull of what chris colfer does. Chris is brillantly witty, hilarious, has the singing voice of an angel, can make me cry, and can pull off extreme dramatics and emotion. Also the fact that he plays a character that has changed people’s lives. I think being able to convey that all in one character makes you deserving of an emmy. Go Chris!

    • Jen says:

I’m not a fan of his voice, and yes the other nominees are just as talented if not more. Yes he has changed peoples lives but THAT DOES NOT MATTER FOR THE EMMY.

  17. Janita says:

Chris Colfer is amazing! He is not fake! He is so different from his character and he makes Kurt real! Its true, he has to cry in a lot of episodes, but he is so funny! He is my idol, my inspiration, he has changed my life! I love modern family, but they dont have so big effect on people! Chris is super talented, the man just wrote, directed and was the lead of a movie they filmed in 2 weeks! He deserves this more than anyone! All the actors r talented, but there is no question that Chris is the best! The man has made me cry and also made me laugh so hard! He is amazing!

  18. Bria says:

Chris Colfer gets the funniest lines in Glee and has priceless facial expressions. He deserves it.

  19. Jon says:

God Glee fans really attach to the characters don’t they I kind of want Chris to win now so they don’t all riot in the streets.

    • Imugen says:

Lol. Well, at least most of us stay rational.
Don’t worry it’s a natural phenomenon that often follows haters parading in the streets.

  20. MJG says:

    CHRIS COLFER deserves this win!!

  21. MrsMonteith says:

For all of you who believe that Chris Colfer “doesn’t deserve” the trophy, you should probably watch Glee first. Colfer is an amazing actor, and singer. They wouldn’t put him on the show if he weren’t. Most of you probably don’t know that they made him his own role because he was just that wonderful. Of course he should win. Anyone who says otherwise is honestly ridiculous, stubborn, and thick-headed.

  22. Mary Rice says:

Definitely Chris Colfer, he is an amazing young man with so much talent!!!!

  23. autumnnnn says:

    Chris Colfer<33

  24. educator says:

I’m so tired of people criticizing Chris Colfer’s sexuality, looks, and voice, rather than his acting skills. He gives the most believable and complex performance on his show, and if you ever see him in an interview (such as Comic-Con 2010), you’ll see how very different he is from his character–in the way he speaks, how he holds himself, and in his personality. He is an incredible actor and I root for him with all my heart.

  25. Alicia says:

I am so sick and tired of people ranting about Chris.
Especially the CRAZY, SELF RIGHTEOUS FANS THAT SWARM THIS AREA.
Pick a fight with Chris, and clearly you’re picking a fight with all the fans. Which is so stupid.

    Considering

    A) If they showed this much conviction for say, um, something that actually mattered, maybe this world wouldn’t be so awful. I mean, come on– he’s an actor. Not your brother, or your bff. So stop being crazy.

    and

    B) That the entire board is chewing some poor people out because they have, oh my goodness, a different opinion, and maybe they should step up and say “It’s yours to have. Awesome.” This is a huge form of bullying and does not promote acceptance of any kind. Which is completley ironic considering that’s the exact thing these Chris supporters are trying to promote through his sexual standpoint. Weak.

    My opinion?

    They got it ALL wrong.

    Chevy Chase. Community.

That man, in my humble opinion, deserves it. For his many years of hysterical, cheesy acting and a drive that just never quits. It’s perfect.

    • Imugen says:

You start by not tolerating bullying.
In any form. Aimed at anyone.

You’re blind if your not seeing that it’s important to speak up for Colfer. This conviction is doing the world some good – believe me I witnessed it first hand.
I’ve not read any comment of those “self-righteous fans” being aimed towards someone who’s not downright insulting.

    • AveryBaby says:

I’m pretty sure the only fans that are “chewing some poor people out,” are the ones that are responding to the ones being hateful about Chris, like you.
Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But you shouldn’t bully someone just because you don’t like them. Those “poor people” could’ve just said “I think _____ deserves it.” And that’s it.
And the rants you brought up…
“I am so sick and tired of people ranting about Chris.”
Well I’m sorry, but those who support Chris have an OPINION too. Not just you, and the ones who don’t like him.
      Thanks for your time.

  26. AveryBaby says:

I think Chris Colfer does deserve this award.
First of all, for everyone who says he is not funny on the show obviously cannot read. It’s “Oustanding supporting actor in a comedy series.” And as I see it, he is a pretty OUTSTANDING ACTOR!
Second, Chris has a BIG role and Glee! He (in my opinion) is one of the best one on the show, considering first, his character he plays so well. Being the only open gay kid in his school, standing up for what he believes in, he is very inspirational. Next being he is a very good actor. He makes you feel for his character, and he really gets into it.
Chris is my rolemodel. Because he dedicates himself to his work, he doesn’t stop and that makes him better at it. He is also gay in real-life (offset, not in character) and he is open about it, he doesn’t care what people think.
Therefore Chris Colfer deserves this award. You can just sit down.

  27. Rindle says:

Glee is hilarious and Chris Colfer is one of the best actors I’ve ever seen. He and his character are very different, and I adore them both! He could win for the episode Sexy alone because I was laughing my butt off and the storyline was ridiculous, but he was still convincing. Anyone else would have just looked stupid playing a teenage baby penguin. Team Colfer!!

  28. M says:

So since Chris won this poll he wins the Emmy right?

  29. Maddie says:

Honsetly I think every one up there is amazing…but chris colfer will win and every one knows it. Hes really talented singer and actor, no matter what role he plays his character kurt on glee is both serious and comedic and he is a great role model. So all you chris colfer haters need to back off. He deserves this :)

  30. shdrew says:

I like Chris Colfer and think he’s the best thing about Glee. That being said, I don’t think he should be in this category because Glee is way more of a drama than it is a comedy. Although I love all the guys on Modern Family, I think the most unsung hero on that show is Jesse Tyler Ferguson. He is absolutely hysterical in what is arguably the least showy role on MF. Every week, he makes me laugh out loud. I so hope he wins.

  31. bethreads says:

I adore Chris, but I’m not sure the writing on Glee has done him any favors this year. If he doesn’t win I’m hoping for Ty Burrell who I think is also pretty amazing. Frankly the kid from Men is a better actor than John Cryer, never mind several actors from Community, NPH, and Dule Hill (I don’t care, Psych is a comedy not a drama) who have done great work.

  32. bethreads says:

Also I think it’s hilarious that you all are taking this way harder than the actual people involved. Pretty much everyone in this category are friendly and say how talented the others are etc. etc.

  33. meme-pinkette says:

  34. angel73 says:

i hope chris colfer wins his amazing and talented and some that dont agree u have your opinions but seriouslly no need to be hateful about it just say who u want and thats the end i dont understand some people so childness somtimes

  35. Kelsey says:

CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER! CHRIS COLFER!
He has some very witty comebacks and hilarious one liners!
    CHRIS COLFER FOR THE WIN!!!

  36. phaus says:

I should say that I watch Glee and also Modern Family and the Emmy´s winner should be one of Modern Family, the Glee guy is not acting, in fact the show´s creator admitted that the part of Kurt was made for Colfer, so the acting is not big deal, but the other actors are incredible and they deserve it better.

  37. emmo says:

    CHRIS COLFER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. TRexesInF14s says:

I love everyone nominated(except Jon cryer but no one likes him lolo), but I think Eric Stonestreet should win. He’s a straight man, but his character is gayer than Kurt(barely), and convincingly so.

And while I love Burrell, Ed O’Niell, and Stonestreet(I don’t personally know why Ferguson was nominated), Danny Pudi and Nick Offerman really deserved at least a nomination.

  39. Yang says:

Chris Colfer is an amazing actor & has an unique vocal that should be on Broadway. Moreover, he takes his role very seriously. My vote is definitely for him.

  40. Chicago Charles says:

I do wish they’d stop calling Glee a comedy. It’s a dramedy at best, it may even deserve the “drama” label.

That said, Chris shouldn’t have been nominated. Since I’ve never seen the performances of the other nominees, I can’t make a comparative judgment. As has been pointed out previously, remember it’s for a PERFORMANCE IN a comedy (which Glee isn’t), not a comedic performance.

  41. GLEEK! says:

I am a total GLEEK but also am a total supporter of modern family! I might have to go with Chris Colfer from glee though. He is such am inspiration!

  42. CJ says:

    I don’t watch Modern Family
I don’t watch Two and a Half Men.
    I watch Glee.

    I don’t give a rat’s ass who wins.

  43. Hannah says:

I think you all need to stop bitching and complaining about Chris.
This is all I have to say:
Chris is an outstanding actor who brought me to tears and made me laugh and helped me come to terms with my own sexuality.
Chris/Kurt gave me the confidence to come out.
Chris/Kurt helped me understand that, no matter how much I get bullied, I will make it. I will make it out of high school. I will learn to walk past the homophobes. Does it hurt? Hell yes, but I will overcome it.
Kurt/Chris influenced me to join my Glee Club. Sure, maybe I get called “fag” or “dyke” more than usual because of it, but because Of Chris and the whole cast of Glee, I have learned that, in several years, those Neaderthals will be flipping my burgers.
Chris deserves this. He can act better than you guys who are trying to bring him down.

Every actor deserves it. That’s why they are all nominated, because they are all VERY talented. Now, let’s stop arguing.

Plus, from the votes, it seems like Chris is the fan’s favorite so far.

  44. debby says:

Go Chris, and take that award.
Iam happy for you from the Netherlands.
    Xxxxxxdebby

  45. Belieber says:

Oh god. I went through all the reviews on this site (I get so riled up by them!) and saw the same arguements over and over again. Chris Colfer shouldn’t win for his inspiring role or his amazing personality, he should win for his acting skills. As I watched ‘Grilled Cheesus’, I truely believed the whole plotline. And for the people saying Chris is really just playing himself (I’m going to pretend I didn’t notice the homophobia there, for other people have clearly taught those who said it a lesson), his dad has never been this close to death. Chris and Kurt are two completely different people, and if you believe that Chris is actually like that, then either your clueless or he must be very convinvcing on the show. I’m not bashing any of the other actors, for I’m not as expirenced with them as Colfer, but I do know that Chris is probably one of the greatest actors I know.

SO THERE!!!! (Sorry, couldn’t resist xP)

  46. moeko says:

    Chris Colfer DOSE deserve it

  47. chris says:

Glee fans are SO embarrassing. I hope none of you are over the age of 13.

  49. Ru perera says:

Chris colfer should win! Good luck 2 u chris! u are like an oasis in the desert among rest in this category. great actor ,great singer, great dancer! What more do u want when u are parched for talent in in what u watch? chris, it is! go chris go!
