Emmys 2011: Who Deserves the Supporting Actor In a Comedy Trophy? Take Our Poll!

Get More: Awards, Emmys, Glee, Polls

If you thought the men of Modern Family had a strong grip on Emmy’s Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy category back in 2010, then this year it’s nothing short of a stranglehold. Four of the six actors in the 2011 race — Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, and last year’s winner Eric Stonestreet — hail from ABC’s uproarious Wednesday-night sitcom. Only 2009 Emmy winner Jon Cryer (nominated for the sixth straight year for Two and a Half Men) and 2011 Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer (up for the second straight year for Glee) keep this category from being redubbed Best Supporting Actor from the Pritchett-Dunphy Clan.

What would you do if you had the power to send one of these fine gentlemen to the podium when the Emmys are handed out Sept.18? Take our poll below to vote for your favorite — TVLine voting closes Sept. 10, so act now! — then hit the comments to justify your pick!

Every day for the next month, we’ll launch another “Who Should Win” Emmy poll, so come back to TVLine.com every day to weigh in on who’s most worthy of TV’s biggest honor, and to stay up to speed on all our races, follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV!

  • I’d like it to be Chris Colfer who has done such a good job during the past season of Glee, but I love MF too and out of the Modern Family lot my vote would go to Jesse.

Ty, really? The characters all have their moments but he’d probably be my 3rd MF choice, after Eric.

  • If Nick Offerman can’t get it, then it has to be Ty Burrell! He is the funniest thing on Modern Family. I have watched the episode where he is the task master to Haley and Alex a dozen times: “Sweet and Sour Chicken!”and “Your poked the bear, girls!”

  • I love Glee and I love Chris Colfer.

    I dont think he’ll win.

I dont watch Parks and Rec so I can’t say Nick Offerman should have been nominated/winning the emmy.

I do watch TBBT, HIMYM and I think the supporting guys there should have been nominated, not necessarily winning the emmy but you, at least being recognised.

But thats just me based on the shows I watch

  • As much as I love Glee I just don’t really think it deserves any awards this season. I preferred the first season to this year’s season. It had it’s moments, but they were mostly for dramatic story lines. Modern Family is consistently hilarious, every cast member deserves an award, it’s so hard to choose between the four acors!

  • I am upset with the Modern Family crew for all putting themselves in for supporting and taking over the catergory, so in some ways, I want none of them to win to teach them a lesson. That being said, I don’t think Chris Colfer and I REALLY don’t think Jon Cryer deserve it either.
I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson too much not to vote for him. But I really feel a nomination and the win should have went to Nick Offerman from Parks and Rec. The five-second scene when he is drunk on the Snake Juice and is dancing with the hat on should have been enough to garner a win!

  • I just have to say Chris Colfer has to win. He has talent beyond any young actor today and outshines even a couple of his co-stars. He is witty and funny in the show and out. He is already a huge success and he only just turned 21. He is also an amazing actor he was so brilliant in the dramatic scenes as well as his comedic scenes. Did I mention his other successes? I know it probably has not contribution but he has written a book, a movie which he starred in himself, a pilot for Disney and a screen play. He also won a Golden Globe. He has done so many things that other people have taken years to accomplish and he’s ONLY 21. I think he deserves this the most.

  • Ed O’Neil is long overdue for an Emmy! He plays the character of “Jay” so perfectly. The real talent is when you don’t know that someone is acting, you believe them at face value.

Glee is overrated, I don’t understand the hype.

  • I can’t believe Neil Patrick Harris hasn’t been nominated this year. Of course, every year, I scream at the television when he gets snubbed. So really, I don’t care, although I love Chris Colfer on Glee and totally fell in love with JTF when he was a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance.

Come on, Emmys, give Barney Stinson some love!

  • They need to have more of a variety! I love Modern Family, but there are plenty of other comedies that have great supporting actors. Parks and Recreation, for example.

  • Is this actually a question? Who DESERVES it? In my opinion any actor who works for hours upon hours on a show and pours their heart into it DESERVES it. So they all deserve it. They are all hardworking, funny, and dedicated to their show and performances. But I think that speaking realistically it will go to one of the Modern Family guys because their show is so popular, funny, and it appeals to a wider crowd than Glee. Though I want Chris to win…the odds really aren’t in his favor.

  • I thought the nomination was for best supporting actor in a comedy and on that basis they don’t have to be funny, but just be a brilliant actor and so on that basis I would vote for Chris Colfer. He’s a unique, special talent.

  • Seriously, what is wrong with you people? Must you make homophobic slurs? It really doesn’t matter which of these actors are straight and who aren’t. I agree that Chris Colfer should win, not just because I’m a Gleek, but because he is immensely talented and there would be no Glee if it weren’t for his character. You must think of his portrayal of Kurt from the WHOLE season, not just one or two episodes. Colfer’s role as Kurt is extraordinary. As far as being derogatory toward his singing and speaking voice, you have no respect for him. That is just the way he talks, get over it. Do you make fun of the way someone talks because they have a speech impediment? How is this different? I only watch Glee and I believe that Chris Colfer deserves to win, but if any of these other actors win, so be it.

  • I vote for Chris Colfer, and to justify this easy choice, I’d simply remind that he is young and has already accomplished so much ! He isn’t only part of the Glee Show, he IS the best representation of the ideas and values that this communicates to the kids and teenagers. He is genuine and talented, a very good actor, he really deserves it. Go forth, Chris !

  • Chris Colfer should win, in my opinion. Each actor is talented, there’s no doubt about that. But Chris is just more deserving of it for this year’s performance in Glee. Although Glee is categorised as a comedy, Chris has been given A LOT of drama to play as Kurt in Season 2, and his acting is done so well, there isn’t one person I can think of to play his character better. Out of all the nominees, Chris should win. Oh and FYI, his smile isn’t fake. That’s his actual smile. And his voice is beautifully high, and he was bullied for having such a high pitched voice, along with other things, so don’t dare say it’s “shrill and annoying”, because his voice is incredibly good. Jealousy is a horrible thing…

  • Chris Colfer should have won last year, not this year. His character is too unlikeable in season 2 and he over-acts so much. The amount of fangirls that think he’s a great actor is laughable.

Comment by Patrica – August 18, 2011 11:21 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • First if all, whether you like or dislike his character on the show shouldn’t matter. Did I like Heath Ledger’s character “The Joker”, no. Do I think Heath Ledger was a great actor, yes I do.
It’s about acting, there are other awards for the writing of a show.

Second: Well, fangirls and boys, we don’t judge. If you don’t have any talent, you don’t get so much ‘fangirls’.
And the fact that he was nominated twice for an Emmy as well as for several other awards, and that he won a Golden Globe, proves that people who should know something about acting, also think that he’s a good actor.

Comment by Zahra – August 18, 2011 11:35 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • It says best supporting actor in a comedy series, Glee is a comedy series (marginally) but the nomination doesn’t have to be for comedy, it’s best supposrting actor overall in the series, the series being defined as comedic, Chris Colfer should have it hands down! And he’s funny in his own right anyway!

  • Chris Colfer deserves this emmy. His portrayal of Kurt has inspired so many people and is so refreshing to see on tv today. He’s had his own experiences which has also helped his portrayal of Kurt be so authentic. He’s just turned 21 has written and is starring in his OWN movie, has written two books and also a show for Disney. Commenting on personal aspects about him makes you no bigger than everyone else in the world. Modern Family is awesome but enough gluttony and give someone else a chance.

  • I hate Glee, really I HATE GLEE also Chris Colfer, he bothers me so bad, for real. But the guy KNOWS HOW TO ACT, he is very impressive, and as much as I hate him and his annoying singing show, my vote is for him. This is not for the best comedy perfomance, is for the best perfomance in a comedy.

Comment by Emma – August 18, 2011 11:35 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Seriously? All I read was: ‘I love Glee, really I LOVE GLEE also Chris Colfer, I want him so bad, for real.’ It’s obvious you’re a fan in (a horrible) disguise trying to play the devil’s advocate, because if you HATE GLEE, you wouldn’t watch it and therefore wouldn’t know anything about Chris and his acting skills. If I hate a show, I rarely have anything good to say bout anyone because I’m never watching it. If I hate an actor/character, I sure as hell wouldn’t vote for him to receive an Emmy. Nice try.

  • considering the category is not called Best Comedian, but Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy.. the award should go to Chris Colfer.

Comment by Corey – August 18, 2011 11:35 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I think Chris is a very talented actor. I love his character on glee. I am not a fan of his voice… but I also don’t really like high voices or showtunes so that isn’t to say he isn’t talented. My issue with voting for him is that I just can’t see glee as being a comedy. I absolutely LOVE the show… and I get that it is for performance IN a comedy… but glee… a comedy??? I usually find my eyes tearing up during every episode… I don’t think the question lies in whether he is deserving just whether this is the right category.

  • This list is seriously stupid. The only ones I can agree with right now are Ty Burrel and Jon Cryer. Where’s Danny Pudi? Donald Glover? Nick Offerman? NPH? Jane Lynch (though IMO, she was way funnier last season)?

Seriously, you gleeks need to chill the heck out. What is with all the Chris Colfer LOVE? I’ve watched Glee since it started, and was only impressed by his performance in the Rocky Horror Episode. Also, he may as well be the main character with how much they focused on him.

Also, glancing over the names, 95% of Chris’s supporters are female. Fangirls are FRIGHTENING in numbers.

Comment by Allen – August 18, 2011 11:40 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • You do know Jane Lynch is female, right? Why would she be nominated with the Best Supporting ACTORS?

Comment by Moxie – August 18, 2011 11:43 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Sorry, I sometimes lose track of that fact given the character she plays on Glee. KIDDING. My argument still stands, though, as witnessed by the fact that she was nominated as ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.’ The female side actually did things right minus Julie Bowen. She was OKAY.

Comment by Allen – August 18, 2011 11:52 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • It will be Chris Colfer or Jon Cryer. With 4 guys from Modern Family on the ballot they will split the vote, and none of them will be able to get a majority.

Comment by Moxie – August 18, 2011 11:42 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • They didn’t split it last year, they vote for actor not the show

Comment by Jon – August 18, 2011 12:02 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Um chris colfer is great! I do not think he should win another Emmy. His character has been given way too much hype. He wasn’t even that big of a character during the second season. He was at the beginning of the season but he kinda disappeared during the latter half behind Darren criss. I think he deserves this nom but Jessie has this years Emmy! They should’ve nominated glee’s newest rising star naya rivera for supporting actress. I love Chris Colfer but there are fourteen other supporting actors and actresses in glee. Give someone else a nominee.
