Fall TV Preview

Law & Order: SVU Exclusive: Stabler's Exit to Be Dealt With Over 'Several Episodes'

Law & Order: SVU won’t be glossing over the disappearance of Chris Meloni’s Det. Stabler when the show returns this fall.

A week after NBC Robert Greenblatt ruled out the possibility of Stabler dying off screen, new showrunner Warren Leight tells TVLine exclusively that the character’s departure will be explained — and there will be fallout.

“The reasons for his absence,” says Leight, “and the effect it has on the squadroom — and Olivia (Mariska Hargitay)  — will be explored in the first several episodes.”

The show’s boss declined to elaborate, but it’s safe to say the events of last May’s finale — in which Stabler shot and killed a young girl — will figure into his exit.

Meloni’s 12-year SVU stint came to an end in May after the actor and NBC failed to come to terms on a new contract.

To help fill the void, SVU is introducing new detectives played by Danny Pino (Cold Case) and Kelli Giddish (The Good Wife).

Season 13 kicks off on Sept. 21 at 10/9c.

  • I go along with everyone else. I won’t be watching SVU with out Stabler. Let’s face it, stabler and Benson’s unique personality traits are what made the show work.

  • I just feel like something is missing without Christopher Meloni being on the show anymore. It’s always been Benson and Stabler! I hope that someday he will return to the show!

  • Like all of the Law and Order series, the recent departures over the last few years have not helped the series. Chris Meloni’s will surely be missed and his departure will definitely affect long time viewers.

  • The show isn’t the same without Eliot slamming guys into walls and being over aggressive with all the perps. I loved him! He and Olivia rock together. Smh.

  • I tried for a few episodes to accept he is gone… but I found myself doing other things like playing on the computer instead of watching. Without the Liv/El combo the show has lost appeal. Its like watching a cheap knock off of SVU instead of the real thing!!

  • Woohoo you go stabler(Christopher). He has the last laugh gets kicked out of SVU and gets an awesome part in man of steel did an awesome job. Was disappointed that it looks like they killed him off. But in the movie world things aren’t always the way they look. Bring him back in the sequel. By the way it was a great movie and Christopher did a great job.
