Today, you’ll have to make a tough call between two of the show’s greatest feathered friends: “Songbird” and “Blackbird,” and weigh in on a Madonna Vs. Gaga showdown (“I Love New York” vs. “Poker Face”). No, Gleeks, it won’t be easy whittling away our field of 64 down to 32, but alas that’s the first step toward settling the debate over which song-and-dance interlude ranks at No. 1 in the two-season history of Fox’s smash high-school dramedy.

So make sure the right choice is made by heading down to our polls to vote for your favorites (Round 1 voting will be open for 72 hours), and hit the comments to justify your picks.

And if you’re interested in the matchups we’ve got planned for the coming weeks, click here to check out the entire 64-player bracket (then click again for a zoomed-in view), and sign up to follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV.

  1. Paris says:

Even though I really don’t care for Brittany and Santana but when Santana sang Songbird that was so beautiful and emotional so I am going with her song for the win. Hold your hand of course will dominate, still bring tears to my eyes. Jump is just great, reminds me of the good glee times also the jumping on the beds were fun.

    • Stacie says:

Songbird was one of the most beautiful songs anyone on the show has sung to someone else. It doesn’t matter that it was 2 girls, the emotion and beautiful way that Naya Rivera delievered that song was in my opinion the best performance(in my opinion) in 2 seasons. Heather Morris’ real reaction to being sung that song were spot on as well. It deserves at least a win in this first round.

I know the Klaine fans are looking at Blackbird as the song that brought Kurt and Blaine together, so it should be an interesting round 1 fight.

      • laulau says:

agreed!! it was my favourite song in 2 seasons!! Naya and Heather were perfect in the scene, it’s the only song that has made me cry in the whole show. Naya’s singing, the looks on her face, everything was perfect, and Heather was also very very good!! Songbird for the win!

  2. Mark S says:

In my opinion, Poker Face VS New York Mash-up is easily the worst matchup of the first round. I wish they both would lose, but Poker Face probably will win due to the Gaga effect. Songbird VS Blackbird is a tough one, but I will give a slight edge to Blackbird. I am pulling for I want to hold your hand and Jump for the other ones. Bring on Round 2.

  3. Christine says:

I dislike 100% of the songs where Kurt is singing alone. A 1-2 line solo in a group song, I can handle that. But this past season’s obsession with him with Blackbird and that Gypsy song that wouldn’t end? Ugh.

    • Tovah says:

Agreed. That freakin Gypsy song brought me to tears in a bad way. Ugh.

      • Liz says:

“That Gypsy song” is one of the best songs in musical theatre history. It has been performed countless times by almost every Broadway great, and Chris not only did justice to it, he introduced the incredible beauty that is Rose’s Turn to the mainstream audience. You should be grateful, he only sang HALF of the original song on the show.

    • Sofii says:

How could you say that?! Kurt does a great job with all of his solos, especially Black Bird. I do admit that Gypsy song was ridiculously long, but he puts a lot of emotion into all of his songs and should be rewarded for it. But I do think Songbird was sung beautifully by Santana

    • Marcus says:

I must respectfully let you know that your taste in music sucks.

    • Jessica says:

I think that Kurt sounds great on his own, blackbird was quite a vocal performance for him, one of his best. My problem with his voice is when he is dueting with Blaine. Animal was awful and Candles was even worse.

      • F says:

Agreed. Kurt’s singing on Animal makes me want to cover my ears and dig a hole. Candles was tolerable only because I’ve never heard the original song, and I was intrigued by the melody of it, but I didn’t feel any chemistry in the way Darren and Chris sang it together.

    • Jenny says:

I agree with Christine. I really don’t care much for Kurt solos. I Wanna Hold Your Hand is one though I do actually like. I felt like he held back on it and that I like.

      • Sandy says:

Agreed. Most of his solos are just not to my liking. Songbird is so much more touching

      • F says:

Of his two Beatles solos, I prefer Blackbird to I Wanna Hold Your Hand, actually. I know that’s not the typical opinion, but he sounds so whiny on I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and his version takes all the fun out of a kind of cheesy song – I don’t think anyone could turn that song into a ballad, much less Chris.

    • Emily says:

I agree, I love Chris Colfer but I’m not a fan of his voice or the way he delivers his songs.

  4. ErixN says:

    Songbird should be winning!

  5. RK says:

I’ll vote Songbird hands down, that was really emotional and i strangely didn’t like Kurt’s Blackbird. I Wanna Hold Your Hand against Listen… well I think no one has doubts about that one, I Wanna Hold Your Hand was beautiful. Jump was pure energy so I’m voting that one. I’m actually not sure about the mash up and Poker Face, none of them was that good, I mean, I like both songs but they weren’t excellent…

  6. Saracen Riggins says:

I am the farthest thing from a Gaga fan, but Poker Face is my very favorite Glee song. I LOVE taking a pop song and breaking it down like that – love those amazing female voices taking each other on!

    • Juan says:

It’s actually an acoustic version that Gaga did, it was even used in Kid Cudi’s song “Make Her Say.”
      Cherrytree Sessions.

I love Idina and Gaga, but I did not dig that song at all with Leah Michelle mucking it up. They really need to stop letting her do every single song.

      • Moron says:

It’s Michele with one L. And maybe when she stops consistently out-singing and out-acting her cast mates, that will happen.

        • Francoise says:

I wouldn’t say out-act. Just look at Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch, also Naya Rivera and Max Adler. All of them have brought a lot more to the table acting-wise than Lea.

And Lea just sometimes has to sing songs that don’t fit her voice – pop songs are not her forte, even though she is mindblowing on the musical numbers.

        • Dee says:

If by out-acting you mean cartoonishly overacting, we are in accord. And Francoise is correct that she outsings the other cast members in traditional musical numbers, but her voice simply isn’t suited for some of the songs she’s given, and it shows. Painfully.

          • F says:

Lea Michele/Rachel is my favourite one on the show, but there are a couple of songs where I agree, they are not suited to her voice. For instance, she sounds very odd on ‘Give You Hell’ – her voice is simply too strong for it.

          • F says:

Oh, the other song where she sounds very strange to me is ‘Baby One More Time’. Those two stand out as very awkward moments to me.

  7. Taylor says:

I can’t believe Songbird isn’t winning!!! It is one of Naya’s greatest vocals during the show, if not the best. I loved it.
I Want to Hold Your Hand is the only song on Glee that has caused me to cry (Pure Imagination came close), so it got my vote over Charice’s amazing rendition of Listen.
Wasn’t a huge fan of Poker Face, so I voted for the NY mash-up.
Kind of surprised Jump & Vogue are so close. Vogue was cool, but I love how they glee-ified Jump in the sound. Plus, the mattresses looked like a blast :)

    • Juan says:

I don’t think they can make Sue that awesome ever again in song without it feeling like they’re softening her. So I vote Vogue.
But I totally also loved the cheese of Jump.

  8. Cynthya says:

I tear up anytime I even think about Kurt singing I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Either that or Don’t Stop Believing should win the whole thing.

  9. Andi says:

If ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ doesn’t end up in the final four at the very least, there is something wrong with this. That was by far the most emotional song they had on the second season. I voted for Blackbird over Songbird because my cable lost that episode right before that number and I didn’t get to hear it. Sorry Naya…blame Time Warner Cable for that vote.

Jump was one of my favorites from season 1. That’s a no brainer. I hated the “I Love New York”/”New York, New York” mash-up so Poker Face won that by default.

  10. Vetle says:

I Wanna Hold Your Hand should win the whole thing. I seldom tear up, but it made me tear up. Also, I voted for Songbird, because Eva Cassidy is AMAZING. I love that song.

  11. Laure says:

I can’t believe that boring New York mash-up is beating Lea and Idina’s amazing version of Poker Face.

    • F says:

I disagree – I find the Poker Face arrangement boring and awkward. I’m not a Broadway buff, so all the fuss over Idina means nothing to me.
New York is a cheesy mashup, but a very fun performance to watch and has a lot of energy going for it.

  12. Rob J. says:

Songbird should win hands-down against Blackbird. Naya Rivera’s vocals on the former blow those of the song’s writer/original singer Christine McVie while Chris Colfer misses the point of the otherwise melancholy, ambivalent Blackbird by forgetting to punch the contrasting confident and defiant final line of chorus — “Into the light of the dark black night.” His Blackbird doesn’t hold a candle to his “I Want To Hold Your Hand.”

  13. Rob J. says:

One more thing: I wish I had checked out the full bracket map sooner, but where in the hell is “Bad Romance?!” The entire comopetition is invalid due to that fatal omission.

    • Amber says:

I forgot about that one, but you’re right, it should be in there, it was pretty awesome. I liked Poker Face but I would have liked to have seen that spot go to Bad Romance if only one could be chosen from that episode. It’s not entirely invalid to me though, because Like a Virgin is still definitely my favorite performance from the whole series. Just my opinion, no disrespect towards anyone else’s opinion.

  14. nass says:

I voted songbird cause Naya’s voice is HEAVEN !!!it was so amazing!! and the way heather and naya acted omg, i was crying so much… im telling you, this girl deserves all the award… Naya <3

    • laulau says:

couldn’t have said it better!! that song has to be one of the best from the whole show!!!! i cried like a baby…. hope at least one of them gets some recognition!

  15. Celia says:

Naya’s Songbird is good, but nothing great. If people were voting for the best performance Blackbird would be winning by a lot.

    • Paris says:

i wholeheartedly disagree with you. Blackbird was boring maybe because I kept on comparing that performance with his version of I wanna hold your hand. Naya’s songbird was great, it really connected with me emotionally.

      • Celia says:

I love Fleetwood Mac so I was very disappointed to hear such a weak cover of this classic song. I wish they would have had one of the better singers cover this song.

        • Captain says:

Naya is the best singer in the group besides Lea. Yes her voice is better suited for more soulful numbers but that doesn’t make her a weak singer.

          • Lucy says:

ahahAH!! What group are you talking about?

If it’s the whole group aren’t you forgetting Amber??

Naya is a decent singer compared to those two

          • F says:

Amber is talented, but I actually prefer Naya to Amber. Lea and Naya are my favourites because they have strong, UNIQUE voices. Amber’s voice is strong but sounds like any generic diva.

        • Gloria says:

You mean one of the other girls with the major label recording contract?

          Oh wait.

    • Joann says:

I agree. Songbird did absolutely nothing for me, and I was surprised about that. OTOH, I have always hated the song Blackbird, and was so surprised to like Chris’s version!

      • F says:

I find it odd that you would dislike Blackbird but like Chris’s version. The reason I prefer Chris’s Blackbird to Chris’s I Wanna Hold Your Hand is that Blackbird stays true to the original song, whereas I Wanna Hold Your Hand butchers the Beatles original. Blackbird feels almost identical to the Beatles version…

    • Mel says:

I don’t really see either one of them as a “performance.” It was just both of them standing there and singing, there wasn’t elaborate dance moves and they were actually pretty similar, in my opinion. I voted for Songbird because, one, I’m a giant Brittana fangirl and two, they used Blackbird to sing about a dead bird and that was just kind of weird to me. :/

  16. Jess says:

    Songbird should win hands down

  17. Marcus says:

Blackbird and Songbird were two of the best solos of the season. The way this bracket is laid out is absolutely stupid.

  18. Marisa says:

Songbird was the best solo performance of Season 2, in my humble opinion. The singing was wonderful, and the emotion conveyed very real and powerful. Go Songbird and Naya!!

  19. Sarah El says:

I Love New York/New York, New York versus Poker Face is a challenge… considering they were both so blegh.

  20. Cheryl says:

Songbird is also one of my all time favorites! I hated Jump tho, might be biased but I’ve always hated that song…

  21. Futebolkid2 says:

Can we please talk about the underwhelming justice for listen? Charice destroyed that song with arguable the beat vocals and most powerful singing of the season!

    • Paris says:

i disagree. Charice constant hand movement annoyed me to no end. It definitely took away the emotional impact of that song. While I wanna hold your hand was beautifully and simply done.

  22. Colleen says:

Blackbird is what officially started Klaine! How can it NOT be winning?!

    • lily says:

      because not everyone likes klaine

    • S says:

I LOVE Klaine and don’t care about Brittana but Songbird is one of my favorite songs of the season so I had to choose it over Blackbird.

    • Alex says:

I knew people would be voting on Blackbird solely because of Klaine. Don’t be so biased and pay attention to the actual song, please. As for me, I just prefer Songbird, but that’s just me.

      • Sally says:

Yes, but people are also voting for Songbird because of Brittana. lol. Truth be told, I voted for Blackbird because I lke that song better and not because of Klaine (most of the time I can’t stand Blaine anyway).

  23. pusspuss says:

Songbird. Hands down. It was so beautiful.

I Wanna Hold Your Hand was really good.

I was very disappointed with the Poker Face cover. And I was looking forward to it just because of Idina Menzel. But it was awful.

  24. JMA123 says:

Calling Poker Face %&*$ing terrible is an insult to %&*$ing terrible things everywhere.

  25. Evan says:

When Paul McCartney wrote Blackbird, it was referring to racial tensions in the USA, not as an ode to a parakeet. Songbird is better anyway, but the misinterpretation of the song by Ryan Murphy alone makes Songbird the better choice.

    • Francoise says:

You’re talking about the guy who used Losing My Religion for someone actually losing their faith.

  26. Captain says:

I know its not a popular opinion but I LOVE I Love New York/New York New York. It’s one of my most played Glee songs on my iPod. Wish it was winning by more.

  27. Bree says:

Songbird because Naya Rivera delivered is so perfectly and I don’t cry very often at music but when she sang it I started to cry. She put emotion into it :)

  28. Layla says:

I really don’t give a f*ck about klaine but I loved Blackbird much more than Songbird.
I feel the two songs are similar however Blackbird is a much better song when comparing the original songs.

I love I love New York New York xD

  29. ash says:

songbird should win, hands down. she was singing it to her soulmate and it was so beautiful that it honestly made me cry. hemo’s reaction to naya singing that song was undoubtebly honest and real.

  30. Kate says:

Seriously Songbird made me cringe, I havent even watched all of that. And if its just winning because of Brittana then idk, polls have always sucked.

  31. Lin says:

Songbird was so emotional and beautiful. I love Santana and Brittany and can’t wait to see their relationship next season.

  32. Alê says:

Did people actually like that horrendous New York number? Come on!

(no to mention how the h*ll Sue’s ridiculously delicious Vogue is losing to… matresses)

  33. Stephanie says:

I love love love the Glee version of Poker Face!! I listen to it all the time, I really, really hope it wins!!

  34. Kelly says:

I Love New York/New York is one of my favorite mashups ever!! It’s fun, exciting, and it’s about New York City aka my favorite city!!!

  35. Sarah says:

Blackbird all the way kurts solo is amazing love Kurt so much xxx

  36. Jessy says:

Ok i voted songbird cause clearly this perfomance was so so SO beautiful!!! Naya is so flawless, she deserves all the awards
    Just saying !
I wasnt very fond of her character but now i can say that she’s by far with brittany and Rachel) my fav.

  37. Vivi says:

Naya FTW!!! Blackbird was so emotional, but I think that Naya sung her heart out on that song, that was so intense!

  38. Melissa says:

Why is Poker Face against New York New York? On the bracket it’s up against Born this Way.

    • Julie says:

I have noticed that other songs have not been arranged in voting like the overall bracket…Someone must not do these very often.

  39. scavanau says:

I am in angst about Songbird and Blackbird! They were both transcendent and tapped into an emotional dimension that is hard for artists to get to in a song. It is a dead tie for me. I wish I could root for one over another, but they were both just that good for me. I can’t decide!

  40. Elise says:

I can’t believe no one seems to like the New York mashup, its my 2nd favorite mashup Glee has ever done (following Thriller/ Heads Will Roll). I LOVE Kurt’s voice, he sings like an angel so I had to vote Blackbird. Jump is one of my favorite songs from last season, so that had my vote hands down. And Charice sings Listen beautifully, but lets face it, Don’t Stop Believing is a classic.

  41. roni says:

where is that jazz song kurt sang in “duets” i really liked it and the end… wow!

  42. Matt says:

How is Vogue not winning? Best moment EVA!

  43. katie says:

I LOOOOVE Glee. But HATED both New York New York ( horrible cheezy kingergarten lyrics) and Poker Face ( completely inappropriate song choice for the situation ). In another Glee songs bracket I voted in, the toughest decision was choosing between Loser Like Me and Born This Way, the top two of this season in my opinion.

  44. Robyn says:

Can’t believe Get It Right isn’t an option or the mash up of Stop In the Name of Love/Free your Mind. But most of all For Good is one of my favorite songs they’ve done in 2 years. As for this vote, Songbird and Poker Face.

  45. Stacy says:

I am dumbfounded that Blackbird is currently losing right now. Chris Colfer sang that song beautifully no matter the situation of the show. The birth of Klaine should have nothing to voting for Chris Colfer’s impeccable voice!!

  46. Jessica says:

I am so glad that Songbird has made a comeback. Now if only the same thing would happen to River Deep Mountain High on Round 2.

  47. Kayly says:

Songbird was a very touching song cause of brittany and Santanna, I absolutly loved it and those two.
I have never heard I wanna hold you hand and listen so I voted for I wanna hold your hand cause I have heard its very amazing( I havent seen all of season 2 :( I missed it when it came on my tv cause I didnt have the channel but then I got the channel when the last two episodes came on and I got the first 12 episodes of it from my friend so I missed some songs in between those episodes, lolz :/ )
“I Love New York”/”New York, New York” was sooooo good! I loved the whole performance and I cant really remember Poker face so i mustn’t been that amazing in my opinion, lolz
Jump was far better than vogue I absolutely loved it!

None of these songs I expect to see in the finals, I would be very shocked if they are, lolz

  48. Lilo says:

    Songbird ♥♥

  49. Gabi says:

Well, i like the both songs but the way she was singing to britney it was just so beautiful n romantic so i’m gonna vote 4 naya =D i love brittana n klaine!
