Ratings: America's Got Talent Surges, Plus the Latest On True Blood, Falling Skies

America’s Got Talent — all three hours of it — dominated this Tuesday’s ratings, leading NBC to a resounding all-around win.

AGT‘s audition extras followed by two Vegas rounds averaged 14.4 million total viewers, while scoring a 4.2 demo rating — delivering surges of 20 and 31 percent versus last week.

Elsewhere on the night, Fox’s MasterChef (4.8 mil/2.1) served up double-digit gains in both measures, while both ABC newbs 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show (4.85 mil/1.9) and Combat Hospital (4.34 mil/1.1) saw slight demo increases.

In the 10 pm hour, CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery special centered on the Casey Anthony verdict placed second, with 5.53 million viewers and a 1.3 rating.

In other ratings news, True Blood dropped 47 percent from its boffo season opener, delivering 2.9 million total viewers and a 1.5 demo rating, TVByTheNumbers reports. But was the holiday weekend/local Sunday night fireworks to blame, or the fact that HBO GO subscribers had access to Episode 2 the entire week prior?

TBTN also notes that TNT’s Falling Skies this Sunday barely slipped, down just 3 percent in viewers (to 4.07 mil) and 7 percent in the demo (to a 1.4 rating). Lead-in Leverage (2.5 mil/0.7), however, tumbled 30 percent in the demo.

I tried to like falling Skies and gave it 4 hours of my life, but I’ve decided four hours is enough. Stupid characters making stupid decisions. Example: week before last, we’ve got to bring back the children… and they do get one, but we want them all they said. This week, “kill the skitter controlling the children,” which they did, and then left all those kids and their automatic weapons. I was ready to turn it off right then. Stupid, just plain stupid.

  2. Captain says:

I think the fact that this season of True Blood SUCKS is what’s mostly to blame. Seriously, now they’re just being weird for the sake of it.

    • Tarc says:

True Blood is fantastic – too bad some people suck. Oh, and a lot of people either caught the second episode on HBOgo or downloaded it during the week prior. I’m pretty impressed that they retained 53% of the opener – nobody shows new episodes of anything on the weekend of the Fourth because the ratings are pitiful because most people have better things to do (our fireworks were amazing!).

  3. Mikaylah says:

I like Falling Skies enough to keep watching it, but I’m bummed that Leverage lost so much of its demo. :(

  4. Chrissy says:

I’m betting a decent number of people watched True Blood early on HBO Go. I know I did. Episode 2 was definitely better than the season premiere, and it appears to be setting up what could be the best season yet!

    • SAM says:

I did the same thing, Chrissy, and agree that the 2nd episode was stronger than the first. After watching it, I was wishing that I could follow up immediately with the next epi.

  5. Monique says:

I think both the holiday weekend and releasing episode 2 early are both to blame for this weeks sucky rating for True Blood. But episode 2 was way better than the premiere.

  6. bethany says:

Not only was the second episode of True Blood on HBO Go all week, it was On Demand the Monday after the premier. As someone who has Time Warner which is not in on the HBO Go deal, it was a pleasant surprise!
This season is going to be amazing!

    • Amber says:

It was On Demand on uVerse too, so I suspect most of us were able to watch it early in some form or another.

  7. BrianR says:

I watched episode 2 of TB on HBO GO and OnDemand last week so I didn’t watch it Sunday.

  8. jessica says:

Does the numbers for the ratings include those who DVR or Tivo it? I recored True Blood but usually end up watching while it’s recording. This week though I watched it the next day.

  9. samantha says:

I’m sure most people took advantage of the 2nd episode being on demand/HBO GO. Maybe this is why they allowed the 2nd episode on that because of the holiday? It was a great episode and I’m sure ratings will be up again come this Sunday.

  10. Shy says:

Yeah, I’m giving up on this too. Ep. 4 went by and let’s face it – it will not get better. Why is it so hard to create a Character? I was watching True Blood. And there she is – this new witch, old lady Marnie in few scenes outplayed the whole cast of Falling Skies. I care about her and she is Interesting to watch. In Falling Skies I don’t care about anyone. They are so plain and boring. In last episode when Noah Wyle’s son remembered his blond girlfriend that was taken away in Ep 3 – and it took me minutes to remember who she was. I totally forgot that she existed and was taken away.

  11. leni says:

I watched second episode on HBO Go. It was great. I am sure the ratings will go up for next episode.

  12. bhm1304 says:

When I realized that “Falling Skies” was just an extremely lame version of “Starship Troopers” and a poor man’s “Battlestar Galactica” without any of the acting talent I gave up on it. Its just a piece of crap with wasted potential. Get rid of the family melodrama garbage and all the lousy child actors and you may have something.

“True Blood” has to get better, the second episode was fantastic and almost made me forget about the garbage premiere episode but the aweful premiere shows in the numbers. With the awesome quality of “Game of Thrones” and “Treme” you would have thought HBO would have made Ball and Co. step their game up.

  13. Waw there are some real Falling Skies haters out there. I can’t think of another show that brought such love and hate at the same time.
