Exclusive: Chelsea Handler's New NBC Sitcom Cuts Three Castmembers in Overhaul

The cast of Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea — Chelsea Handler’s new semi-autobiographical NBC sitcom — could probably use a stiff drink right about now.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that nearly half of the show’s ensemble — including White Collar alum Natalie Morales, onetime ER nurse Angel Laketa Moore and Chelsea Lately staple Jo Koy — have been let go.

A spokesperson for the show confirmed that the trio would not be moving forward with the series for creative reasons. Their characters are currently being reconceived.

Slated to premiere at midseason, Vodka is inspired by Handler’s best-selling comic memoir; That ’70s Show‘s Laura Prepon is staying put in the title role. Morales was set to play Chelsea’s best friend, while Moore and Koy co-starred as her sports bar coworkers.

You can see the three of them in action in the show’s original trailer below.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

Typical NBC interference in the pre-production phase – complete panic after reading a lame script or seeing a bad run-thru – knee jerk freak outs – let’s re-cast! That way if it fails we can blame casting!!! Cant NBC sink SO LOW that they will just get rid of the suits and let creative people do the show they ENVISION – yes, it might fail as well but at least it will be that creator’s taste and take that failed – not twenty people arguing over what a joke is.

I look forward to watching this show but I am surprised that it isn’t on a network where it could get away with more adult language and themes. I am also very disappointed to read that Jo Koy was cut from the show. I find him very funny.

  3. Amanda says:

The lead character needs to be replaced… she just is NOT funny in this role

  4. crissy snow says:

That wig Chelsea has on is awful. they needed to get rid of that awful cast.

I watch Chelsea Lately on the regular, while I’m happy there’s a female host for late night in a male dominated area- it’s the round table comedians who draw me in rather than her.
This show looks horrendous, forced, and dated. I will gladly skip this- the best part of this teaser was Dot-Marie Jones.

    Racially motivated.

I wanna see more gay aborigine theme shows.

WOW, just when you thought network television couldn’t get anymore ridiculous and sad here comes this…I don’t even know what to call it? I love Chelsea Lately but it really doesn’t translate.

  9. Amaury says:

I love what I saw. I don’t like jo koy or whatever his name is. I think he was kicked out because of a comment he made about chelsea at the roud table recently. Loni love made a jokr about some people who got tv shows by sleeping with old men or something and koy said Loni was refering to chelsea. I wonder if Loni will ever be back on Chelsea Lately for that remark too. We’ll see. I love chelsea. She has alot of fans ouy here in Puerto Rico

    Chelsea,

I have watched all your shows (back when you did comedy routine for E! – when you were trying to choose an assitance). You did not have Chelsea Lately. My husband and I are die hard fans. I’ve read every one of your books. I love your honesty, your humility, your dry wit, and think you are the comedian of our time.I love how you protect your friends, aren’t afraid to call out celebrities or famous people for ridiculous behavior.

I caught your short on-line promo and thought it was great. I understand it is going through some changes. But I am not sure why. It was laugh out loud funny. But hey, I have a degree in BS in Journalism and PR, that I didn’t use much. I was a pharmaceutical rep for most of my career.

I’d am substitute teacher now. My husband fortunately makes enough money that I don’t have to work at this time. I would love to intern at your office this summer or anytime. I am on LinkedIn under Gayle Atwell. You can see my picture and credentials. I love to laugh, work, exercise, look younger than I am, etc. But I don’t drink any longer because of migraines – so I am the perfect driver. Also, I don’t feel the celebrities should not have privacy.

In any event, please develop this show. I think you will have a hit. Also, your work ethic is amazing. And I don’t think you went to college but your vernacular is awesome. And you don’t look older than you are and your body is great. (and no I’m not Gay- I just work out like crazy to look good and be healthy.

Chelsea Handler really sucks at acting. Iwill give the show a chance because Laura Prepon looks like shell be hilarous in this role. But like all things Chelsea H. this shows humor will probably kill itself. No offence to any fans, I do think Chelsea is funny in small doses, but not for a sitcom. I guess we will see!

  12. jillian says:

all NBC sitcoms end up with poor ratings/viewers of 3 to 4.5 million compared to 10,12 million on other networks. so, this sitcom looks lame as HELL. I give it less than 12 episodes before it’s cancelled. Looks lame.

  13. chuckie cheese says:

um, yeah, in the trailer, the jailcell guard is an actual porn actor

  14. Jim says:

Chelsea has a new show eh, well I liked her better the 1st time, when she played “Drunk Girl” on SNL. Pretty sure it was the same person, yep.
