Summer TV Snapshot: The Nine Lives of Chloe King Gives Teen Angst Some Claws

WHEN | Wednesdays 8:30/7:30c, premiering June 29

WHAT IT’S ABOUT | In real life, Raven-Symoné has been acting since she was a toddler, on series such as The Cosby Show and That’s So Raven. But in this new half-hour comedy, she’s just a gal trying to break into this business we call show. As Georgia, “an aspiring actress with a larger-than-life personality” she toils at a New York City department store with her socially awkward, science-geek best friend Jo (Roswell‘s Majandra Delfino). Georgia and Jo spritz perfume between attempts at foraging for acting gigs and trying to get into a top-tier university physics department, respectively.

GIRL POWER | Although there are sure to be romantic entanglements à la most every ABC Family series, Stage of Georgia is more about the mismatched gal pals and the title character’s over-the-top Aunt Honey (Grey’s Anatomy‘s Loretta Devine), with whom the girls stay in an extravagant two-story apartment. Devine describes Honey as a far cry from Alzheimer’s victim Adele on Grey’s, insteading dubbing her “a lady of leisure” prone to making grand entrances. “She’s a flamboyant broad, and not realistic at all.” But the role does bring Devine full circle in her career. Her first sitcom gig was A Different World, which was a spinoff of Raven-Symoné’s Cosby Show.

WATCH THIS IF YOU LIKE… | ABC Family’s other foray into comedy, Melissa & Joey, which also stars familiar-slash-retro faces and airs right before State of Georgia. Also watch if you want to see what Delfino looks like nine years after Roswell‘s end. (Spoiler alert: The girl has not aged!)

  1. Ashley says:

I’m excited for this. I grew up in my preteens and teens on both Roswell and That’s So Raven, so seeing Raven and Majandra (who was my favorite on Roswell) in a show will be fantastic. I’ve especially missed Majandra on my screen! She seriously has NOT aged.

And NINE years since Roswell ended? Thank you for officially making me feel older than I already do.

  2. MDEP says:

Seriously considering watching this becase of Majandra Delfino… Roswell is my all time favorite TV show. I spent hours on my computer, when dial up all there was, downloading every episode to rewatch. Roswell is the only TV show on DVD I own. I also spent way too much time online in discussion forums reading other peoples theories and discussing my own. So any TV show any of them do, I check out. I mean any – Shiri Applyby as Lilith, a wannabe hit woman, and a stepford wife? Watched them.

  3. Lauren says:

This looks absolutely terrible, but ditto with the above posters – I’ll watch it for Maria!! I LOVED her on Roswell, her and Michael were the best things about that show. Sigh. I think it’s time to dust off the DVDs and give it a rewatch.

  4. Jason says:

I will watch this! I grew up watching these two on t.v.! I’m only 20 and I’m so happy that I feel like my childhood is coming back!

  5. Jena says:

Can’t wait to see my 2 fav gals on a new show.

  6. Lorie says:

I like Raven and love Loretta Devine, so I’ll check out their new show.

  7. Brandie says:

The show is written and produced by author Jennifer Weiner, who has made a career out of creating witty and realistic female characters. I’ll give it a shot based on Weiner’s rep alone.
