Sources confirm that Gibson signed on for two more years in a deal worth mid-to-high seven figures, plus a signing bonus. All told, the actor will more than double his previous salary.

YES! Now the show is back on to full strength. Hotch is the glue that holds the team together and Gibson deserves every penny he gets.

    • Linda says:

I so agree! Hotch IS Criminal Minds! Would not be the same without him!

    • Lucas says:

I have to disagree with you on that one. Hotch might be the Unit Chief and Admin Guy (a role that should have always been JJ’s cause it made the most since with how they originally and best wrote her), but he is not the glue

The glue is Reid. All the best relationship moments revolve around him. He’s the character that has developed the most as the writers have created a ‘hero’s journey’ with his maturity. Lose him and the team is gone. Not because of his computer brain (they can find a solution for that part) but because of the relationships.

      • lucy says:

You have got to be kidding (jaw dropped)! I totally disagree with you. Reid is NOT the glue, Hotch is “the glue”. I don’t have time to spell everything out for you but if you were a fan from the start you would understand (’nuff said)

  2. spidinator says:

    This is awesome news!!

  3. NickC says:

I think he’s great but part of me wanted him to move on.Then Morgan could take over the team.At least it would have given the show something new to do…then again they run this show so badly.

    • Maria says:

They already went there. Didn’t work. Morgan was completely out of his element and awkward as all hell, the team’s dynamic screwed up in a very bad way and worst for Moore, it showed that he’s not a strong enough actor to carry that role.

      • Annie says:

I agree with Maria – but I think it’s not about the actor, it’s about the character. Morgan is strong while he stays where he is on this team. He stands as the emotional warrior, he brings this pent-up heroism to the cases and exactly because of that, he’s not bound to lead those with whom he bonds deeply. When they tried to make him stoic and practical, his emotional balance was severely compromised. His relationship with some characters was harmed and team dynamics went down the hill. It just didn’t work. Hotch is a character designed for the leading role, where his emotional layers are balanced with the odds of being a leader. Tha’s why he is important. To make the character of Morgan a leader to this team they’d have to rebuild it altogether.

That said, YAY!!! for having Gibson back. We can all sleep now. ;)

      • Ashley says:

Maria’s right. The team dynamic – and thus the show’s balance – were completely off in those episodes where Morgan was the unit leader. I love Morgan and Shemar Moore, but it just wouldn’t feel right to have him as the team leader.

      • E says:

I disagree. I think he worked quite well as a *brand new* team lead. To expect someone to go from being a member of a team, to being the team lead, with no growing pains, is unfair.

        • sophie says:

The only thing Morgan can do is kick down doors, even when he has the key!

          • jennrae says:

Morgan operates best as The Muscle, but more often than not the Unsub gets the drop on him, so that’s not saying much for him. He is pretty, that is all. For some reason the writers seem to think the flirtation between him and Garcia is appealing, and a draw to the show, but I always found it condescending.

      • Jaye says:

Moore is more than capable. THe writers wrote Morgan that way and he played it perfectly. Morgan has never been one for the role of leader, he doesn’t want it. he wants to be the King’s Right Hand Man, not the King. He took the position because it was temporary and he was asked by his best friend to do it in order to keep the team together. But he was conflicted and uncomfortable and it showed just as it should have.

As for freshening things up, I think that Hotch should step down as Unit Chief. Calm down, I’m not saying he should leave the team. I’m just saying that he shouldn’t be the team administrator. He could still be there as a kind of Senior Profiler. But JJ was originally written as a kind of admin assistant, sorting cases, dealing with the media. It was not logical to have her saying she liked her role and then suddenly she’s a full gun toting field agent. It didn’t really work with her character.

So they have hinted that Strauss is going to have to take a leave and Hotch will take her position temporarily. I think that Rossi knows about this and perhaps what he talked to JJ about was stepping back into her old role AND overseeing that all the paperwork is properly filed etc. Basically being the non profiling side of Hotch. As well as doing the whole media thing. And when Hotch comes back, I could see him letting that stay as it is. Because it works. Sure he’d help, he’d never ask JJ to do his paperwork for him like he often did for the team. And she might come to him as the Senior for advice and he would happily give it (just as he might be doing as the Director position). A step toward a future where Hotch might permanently be in Strauss’s role with JJ as his successor if you will. And a female Unit Chief would be a real shake up in many ways.

  4. Nikki says:

Yes! I’ve been checking up on this for days on end, and I’m so glad I checked again when I did! Season 7 is going to rock without a doubt! *high fives everyone*

  5. Tiffany says:

Thank goodness! Hotch is the soul of this team, and it couldn’t have continued on without him.

  6. dhee says:

Woohoo! I’m so happy! Criminal Minds without Hotch is unthinkable!

  7. Ele says:

Extremely happy!!! Great way to start the week! Now all the team is complete, season seven will be awesome!

  8. Justin says:

GREAT NEWS! Glad Hotchner is back.

  9. I Heart Damon Salvatore says:

I think I speak for most people when I say, “PHEW!”

  10. Amanda says:

That is awesome!! Without Hotch it just wouldn’t be Criminal Minds. Glad I can continue watching my favorite show! :-)

  11. CJ says:

Very glad he’s staying – but hate seeing salary info like that. (And understand, I’m referring to TV salaries in general, not just Gibson.) I have to work all year, not just a few months, and it would still take 8-10 years to make what he’ll get for ONE episode. And, of course, to pay salaries like this, the networks jack up their advertising prices, which means the companies jack up their prices to offset the increase in advertising fees – and I wind up paying :-(

No problem with people being rewarded for doing something well, but it gets a little ridiculous.

    • Renee Harrington says:

      Exactly what I was thinking.

    • Jax says:

You may have to work all year but I bet you don’t have to work 14 to 16 hour days like he does. Not to mention all the promotional stuff he is required to do outside of taping the show. And no, Gibson getting a raise is not going to affect how much your groceries cost.

    • BT says:

It drives me nuts when people complain about how much TV and movie stars are paid:

      1. The work may not be year-round, but they have to work longer hours than most regular professionals, agree to allow others to make decisions about his appearance (no haircuts or facial hair without network/executive consent), continue to work “off the clock” promoting the show officially (press junkets and interviews) and unofficially (fan encounters), and basically deal with the public encroaching on his personal life.

      2. Cost of production is only one factor in advertising prices (and I doubt they would have gone down even if TG had taken a pay cut), and advertising prices is only one factor in the price of merchandise. Raises like this bear little-to-no blame for the cost of groceries or whatever going up.

      3. The show makes a certain amount of money. Stars ask for what they believe is their fair share of the total profit (I hate, hate hate the teachers-and-firefighters-don’t-make-as-much argument; it’s not like teachers and firefighters will be making more money if a TV or movie star makes less – the rest goes to the network and show executives!). If they didn’t believe he was worth the extra money, they wouldn’t have agreed to pay it to him.

    • @Jax and @BT says:

If you had read the tweets from the makeup artists and hairstylists of the show during season 6, you would have found out that none of the actors works or is on set 14 or 16 a day. Most of the days they’re not even there. There are very few days when they have to work that many hours and when that happens, they, almost always, have the morning or afternoon, or sometimes the entire next day off.
The only people who are on set all those hours are the people we never see, the ones who work behind the cameras.
But yes, Thomas’ pay raise is very well deserved. He was the only lead of a CBS TV show who was so “low” payed.

    • cheryl says:

I think TV stars age a lot faster than people who work 9-5 plus OTs. They change their biological clock often, sleep and wake up at odd hours, have meals at different times of the day, and what’s more higher salary does mean they pay a lot more taxes than the average person, you know.

  12. steve says:

This Is Awesome news!!!! without hotch it just wouldnt be the same

  13. mandy says:

OMG I have been waiting for this news! I was starting to get nervous ever since I heard filming started in a couple of weeks! This cast, with AJ Cook and Paget back is the most solid cast on television!

I can’t wait for this season!

  14. Chatty says:

I am very glad that he received the raise he wanted. His performance last season on that whole arc – especially the 100th episode – was an acting tour de force. He deserved to win an Emmy and wasn’t even nominated. He is just fantastic and we should now get our “old” show back. This is wonderful news.

  15. Laura says:

I actually said “woo hoo” out loud when I read this headline. CM will be great next year with everyone back! Can’t wait.

  16. dee says:

Great news! That’s the entire cast re-signed, right, or so I hope. I think one or two still had time remaining on their contracts, I really hope we don’t have to go thru this again.

  17. Eva says:

Woot! Thomas Gibson is the reason I watch Criminal Minds! Glad to see the team back – if only they could have a Gideon guest appearance…

  18. mattie says:

AWESOME NEWS!!! PHEW! What a relief. So happy Thomas Gibson is coming back. As was said before, Gibson IS CRIMINAL MINDS. Without him, it would be a completely different show.

His salary is well-deserved and earned. Criminal Minds is the second highest drama to NCIS on CBS; Gibson deserved to be rewarded for that. He’s is so talented, with great range; now the writers need to give him the kind of material worthy of his talent. And we need to see much more Hotch than in Season 6; as a matter of fact, we need to forget season 6 ever happened.

So thrilled to have Thomas back; now I can enjoy my favorite team with all my favorite members; and can’t wait to watch Season 7 unfold with the unraveling of the Hotch/Prentiss/JJ secret. Boy! I’m loving this!!

  19. RvE says:

    A.J. Cook back – check.
    Paget Brewster back – check.
All the relevant cast members re-signed (or still on) for next season – check.
All the dumbass mistakes of the last season corrected – check.

  20. Tanjuska says:

Finally!!! It’s Great news.I have been waiting for this news every day.
Hotch character is great in Criminal minds! I would like so see him saving Prentiss from Doyel :)

  21. Lorie says:

Suh-weet!! All is well now at CM.

  22. Cathy says:

Between the Criminal Minds story, BBT and SVU, Ausiello has made my day. Thank you!

    • Esta says:

ITA, we are twins! But you do realize he doesnt write all of these stories, right? In fact I don’t think he has the byline on any of the ones u mentioned.

  23. Ashley says:

Oh, you just made my day! Thomas Gibson will be back, the casting mistakes of season 6 have been corrected, and I’ll get my favorite show back to the way it’s supposed to be in season 7! Thanks for the info, Nellie – you sure know how to cheer a girl up!

  24. Kevin says:

Has CBS lost their MINDS already. REALLY don’t know how long CRIMINAL MINDS going to last and I’m already giving up on this. Think CM showrunner completely lost their MINDS too.

    • Dav says:

How so? I’m not sure what your complaint is refering to. Did you not want Gibson to return?

    • Me says:

Lost their minds about what? Retaining the anchor of the the show? Making most fans happy after about a year of making alienating decisions? Besides, if you’ve already given up on the show, as you claim, why are you even bothering to read this article?

  25. nonabgo says:

This is indeed great news! I was afraid they would split the team again and we’ll have another seasons without a major character. Though I’d still have watched the show even without Gibson, it wouldn’t have been the same.

  26. Jessica Valure says:

i am so happy about Thomas Gibson signing another 2 years its gonna be awesome now we get all the main actors back and that’s the best can’t wait for season 7 of Criminal Minds

  27. Regina says:

    Fantastic news – thank you!

  28. Suncatcher says:

There’ll be dancin’ in the streets tonight! So super Gibson held out but in a very professional way.

So. CBS started this entire mess last June 15 2010 when they fired AJ Cook and cut back Paget Brewster. They then rehired the 2 and fired Rachel. They then PRAYED that Thomas Gibson would come back as the CM fans are in NO MOOD for any more stupidity by CBS about this top 10 series!

    Thomas – WELCOME BACK!

  29. Vicky Tan says:

What a relief! Been following up news on TG’s return. Love CM and love Hotch’s character. I hope CBS will give the handome TG a great story line is Season 7. Cannot wait to see the full team in action again.

  30. KMM says:

Criminal Minds would not be as great as it is without Thomas Gibson. I remain a fan with the news of his return. I too, would stop watching the show completely if Gibson was no longer on the show.
I am looking forward to season 7 and discovering what role JJ will have as she returns to the team. I absolutely loved the storyline of Emily’s past life and am happy to hear that she will be returning. Paget Brewster is a tremendous actress who carries her role so very well. The icing on the cake would be if they could have Mandy Patinkin on as a guest star on occasion. Just a thought!!

  31. rita says:

Ilove them all, Ieven miss Gidieon very much.I hope none of them leave, I would like to see a little romance some time Though .
