Preview: Drop Dead Diva Returns With Old Loves, New Romances and... the Sex Talk

Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva returns this Sunday at 9/8c to deal with the aftermath of last season’s car accident — and as it turns out, the biggest victim of that mishap may be Jane and Grayson’s relationship. Series creator Josh Berman and leading lady Brooke Elliott shared with TVLine a preview of Season 3’s many romances, heartaches, guest stars and one really uncomfortable sex talk.

ARE YOU THERE, GRAYSON? IT’S ME, DEB | The Season 2 finale ended with Grayson (played by Jackson Hurst) looking up at Jane with a quiet, “Deb?” — but he’ll have trouble remembering that revelatory moment in Sunday’s premiere, thanks to the accident. Still, Berman tells TVLine that Grayson will get “extremely close to the truth [about Jane’s identity]” during this new batch of episodes, and in an unexpected manner. And by the end of the season, he says, Grayson will look at Jane “a whole other way.” Grayson won’t be the only one seeing people in a new light. Although Jane’s still carrying a torch for her former flame, she’ll spy a different side of him when a conflict puts them at odds for the first time and “makes them both think deeper about their feelings for each other.” Elaborates Elliott: “[Jane is] trying to figure out, ‘Are they still right for each other? Or have they changed too much and maybe their path is something else?’”

A SCANDALOUS AFFAIR | When Grayson moves up his wedding to Vanessa (Jaime Ray Newman) – and puts Jane in charge of the wedding plans, as his best man! – Jane will come to realize that maybe it’s time to move on. Cue the parade of new love interests! “She starts dating a neurosurgeon [played by Damages‘ Ben Shenkman],” reveals Elliott. But it’s the introduction of Jane’s own ex, a high profile D.A. (guest star Tony Goldwyn, Ghost), that’s got Berman really excited. “She finds out that in her old incarnation, she was having an affair with him,” he explains. “As new Jane, she’s got feelings for him too, so it really is complicated.” Despite all the new men in Jane’s life, Elliott thinks the lady lawyer’s “heart is still with Grayson, and still hoping and praying and wanting that to happen.”

Drop Dead Diva Exclusive First Look: Watch Jane Serenade a Comatose Grayson

(OTHER) WORKPLACE ROMANCES | Jane and Grayson aren’t the only complicated non-couple in the office. Kim (Kate Levering) will find herself back at the law firm eventually, but don’t take that to mean things are back to normal with ex-boyfriend/boss Parker (Josh Stamberg). “Kim and Parker have quite a dance that lasts all season,” says Berman. “Are they friends? Are they lovers? Who are they to each other?”

THE BIRDS AND THE BEES | New lovebirds Stacy (April Bowlby) and Fred (Ben Feldman) will hit a few bumps in their new relationship — including one in the bedroom. In Episode 2, we’ll find out Fred’s a virgin and needs some coaching from Jane to, ahem, please Stacy. Things don’t get any easier the following week, when Stacy grows suspicious about Fred’s refusal to talk about his past. “Fred has to literally create a mom,” teases Berman. To that end, he hires an actress (Jennifer Tilly, Bound) to play the part, with comically disastrous results. “Fred can’t hide from his true identity forever,” adds Berman. “So it’s going to haunt him in funny ways.”

WANTED: TWO DIVAS | Diva‘s long line of fun guest stars this season includes singer/sometime tabloid-magnet LeAnn Rimes (above), daytime talk host Wendy Williams (right), Paula Abdul, Nick Zano, Mario Lopez, Faith Prince, Sharon Lawrence, Clay Aiken, Lance Bass and Wanda Sykes. But there are still two performers Berman is dying to recruit: Bette Midler and Cher. “[To get them singing] would be amazing, right?!” he exclaims.

TERI’S YEAR | It’s a big season for Jane’s hardworking assistant, Teri (Margaret Cho). We’ll meet two of her boyfriends as well as her college nemesis (played by Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger). Teri has also got a P.I. license now, so look for her to help Jane out with investigative work. Berman also hints at a “hilarious” scene between Cho and guest star Kathy Griffin, “where they go at each other.”

DID YOU HEAR? | One character “is going away” forever in episode 4, Berman revealed to TVLine. Before you start worrying about the oft-disappearing Fred, take comfort in the fact that he’s “very earth-bound [this season],” assures Berman. “We feel like he’s not going anywhere. He’s here to be with Jane.”

  4. Imzadia says:

I absolutely LOVE this show! I’m looking forward to all the new ‘life’ challenges that the main characters will be facing in this new season, especially Jane and Greyson. What I see as the ‘Hook’ that pulled me in to watching this show is that it’s about How Deep is the Connection between Jane/Deb and Greyson REALLY, which ‘to me’ makes DROP DEAD DIVA a show that’s exploring More Than the surface presentation of Human Character;that which goes beneath our skin and touches upon what endures -possibly- beyond the ‘physical’. BUT… I’m hoping that ‘Greyson’ figures it out for himself about Why he feels a sense of ‘familiarity’ with Jane and Then Jane can validate his ‘theory’ by telling him what happened.

Of course, I’m also happy that Stacy and Fred Finally made a ‘connection’. Additionally, ‘Kim’, ‘Terri’, and ‘Parker’ are All very interesting characters who balance out the ‘personalities’ that surround Jane. It’s fun to watch it all gel into one of my Favorite TV shows Ever. I’m so excited for the new season to begin. I only wish that there were more episodes per season.

    I love this show…
And I know that everyone is rooting for Jane and Grayson, but I LOVED Tony and Jane!
Fred is adorable. Can’t wait to see more of him this season.

I don’t want Grayson to find out about Jane being Deb. I want Grayson to fall for Jane as Jane. If Grayson finds out about Deb it would ruin the intended premise of the show. Can someone who used to be a model make the same guy fall for her when she becomes someone who is clearly not a model. Sure if and when they finally reveal the truth to Grayson, he is going to fall in love with her because she is essentially the same person he fell in love with before, so its not a big deal, but I believe a much deeper lesson about love and stuff would result if they never revealed the truth to him.

  7. Tee says:

Personally I liked Jane and Tony, wish he would come back.
