Fall TV Mystery: Who'll Be House's New Boss?

It’s a job we wouldn’t wish on anyone in the medical community: lording over the brilliant if bullheaded Dr. Gregory House. And yet it is a position that must be filled, given that Fox’s House is heading into its next season sans Lisa Edelstein as Princeton Plainsboro’s Dean of Medicine, Dr. Lisa Cuddy. What sort of superior should the show introduce to keep House in check? Female, male? Prickly, hunky? We have some ideas….

Matt’s Inside Line: Scoop on House, Grey’s Anatomy, Fringe and More

Series creator David Shore says the possibilities for picking Cuddy’s successor are “wide open…. Everything’s on the table” — promoting Wilson included. And yet we have the strong feeling that the writers won’t be able to resist the opportunity to shake things up with a brand-new boss person.

“It’s safe to say there’ll be new players next season. Some,” Shore told us. And with Edelstein gone and Olivia Wilde expected back only in measured doses (as Thirteen), “Yes, we would want to have a female presence, absolutely.”

So here are our picks, both femmes and fellas, to (try to) keep the House in order.

Stephen Fry | This Brit wit has before teamed with his BFF Hugh Laurie in the BBC’s A Bit of Fry & Laurie and ITV’s Jeeves and Wooster. He’s also familiar to Fox faithful from his intermittent gig as Dr. Gordon Wyatt on Bones. We could see Fry playing a Dean of Medicine with whom House strikes an instant connection — Wilson’s jealous, what? —  though Laurie might be tempted to slip out of his American accent now and again.

Janeane Garofalo | The sometime comedienne has been laboring to break into the TV drama biz, first on 24 and most recently on the short-lived Criminal Minds spin-off. On House, she could give as well as she gets, and probably with little to none of that palpable sexual tension viewers grew used to.

House Boss On Finale Fallout: House Wasn’t Trying To Kill Cuddy

Tim Roth | I’ll pretend for a second that I don’t know how these things work and propose that Roth’s Lie to Me character, the genius Dr. Cal Lightman, take the reins at PPTH, if only because he’ll be able to glean each and every time his world-class diagnostician is trying to dupe him.

Calista Flockhart | Now that Brothers & Sisters has retired to that wine cellar in the sky, she’s available. And we like the idea of her playing a Dean who on the surface comes across as Ally McBeal-style flighty — something that prompts House to dial down his game and let his guard down — when in actuality she’s playing him, being secretly as razor-sharp and cunning as the duplicitous doc.

Tom Welling | Another way to go in filling Cuddy’s shoes is by totally zagging and making House answer to some young whippersnapper. We see a scenario where the Smallville alum plays a suited-up, top-of-his-class Harvard grad who thinks he knows all there is to know about his primo new job, but is in for a rude awakening as to how things really work when one of your subordinates is a super… maniac.

Fall TV Mystery: Who Will Parks and Recreation Cast as Tammy No. 1?

Keri Russell | Think Welling’s character, only… even prettier. Already a de facto member of the Fox family from her turn on last season’s Running Wilde — and beloved since her days as Felicity — she could play a preternaturally brilliant administrator who knocks ladies man Chase off his game as much as she professionally perturbs House.

Allison Janney | This bit of dreamcasting perhaps gets us most excited, the idea of TV’s erstwhile C.J. Cregg boarding the Fox drama as a no-nonsense Dean of Medicine who perhaps condones House’s envelope-tearing therapies a smidgen more than Cuddy did, yet nonetheless takes an almost sadistic delight in making him fight for his way. Janney is lethal with well-crafted banter and zingers, so seeing this four-time Emmy winner crackle in scenes with Laurie, a four-time nominee, would certainly elevate our pulse.

Who would you like to see fill the void on House?

  1. Kozis says:

My prediction is that the new boss of house will be.. well, House. House gets a promotion

  2. Kim says:

    Mira Sorvino.

She guest starred in an episode where she was a doctor (psychiatrist) stationed in Antarctica. There was sexual tension between her and house, and in some ways, she seems to understand him. Would love to see this play out a bit more.

  3. John says:

None of the above. I think Anthony La Paglia of Without a Trace would fit well. Poor Wilson. 2 guys who can play a bit crazy and come out of it looking perfectly sane.

  4. erin says:

Hugh Laurie has been nominated five times for an Emmy, not four.
Stephen Fry or Alison Janney would be fantastic. But isn’t she on The Good Wife?

  5. Brian says:

I think Stephen Fry would be absolutely fantastic, they always had such a good working relationship in A Bit of Fry And Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster and not forgetting their times in Blackadder…i give a huge thumbs up for Stephen Fry

  6. Cameron says:

Given how the last season ended, I’m wondering how House can possibly have any job at all left, with or without a boss. Isn’t he going to have to begin Season 8 as a jobless fugitive from justice?

  7. jon cryer says:

How about Charlie Sheen? He is looking for work.

  8. Magnús says:

Tim Roth or Fry would be fantastic!!

  9. Sharon says:

Allison Janney all the way!!! She is hilarious and an exceptional actress.

    The Jackal, anyone?

  10. philip alfieri says:

They should bring back either Stacy

  11. =-( says:

ugh i feel like this is going to ruin my favorite show.. thanks for fuqing it up fox

  12. John says:

If they go with Jeneane Garafalo, I will never watch the show again. Like nails on a chalkboard!

  13. James says:

I would love to see Jay Mohr as House’s boss!

    • Lois says:

Jay Mohr was really brilliant on Law & Order:CI as the Charlie Sheen-like guy. I didn’t know he was that good an actor. I usually think of him as a comedy guy.

  14. william says:

Michelle Pfeiffer,Kim Basinger or Rene Russo

  15. Lauren says:

I think an old, grumpy, yet full of life woman would be pretty interesting and funny to be House’s boss. (Perhaps with a pretty daughter for House ;) )

I could see her setting tricks up for House just like Cuddy did, but it’d be even more funny since she’s well..you know..OLD.

  16. Lyle Anderson says:

I say bring back Cameron or Masters to the diagnosis team, and bring in a character to fill the job left from Cuddy’s departure.

  17. Margaret says:

    How about Charlie Sheen?

  18. philip says:

Jennifer Morrison wood be a good Bossfor House

  19. Kim says:

I would like either Heather Locklear, Susan Lucci, or Christy Brinkley. Just for hotness factor…the first two would be great actresses, the last one Christy would just make my hubby drool.

  20. Izzy says:

I think either Cameron should be House new boss because they have some what of a history and she is a good actress or Wilson should be House new boss, House and Wilson have been good friends and even though House is rebellious I believe Wilson can put House in his place until House does the opposite of what Wilson said.

  21. GdG says:

LISA FREAKING EDELSTEIN!!!! the one and only. I want that bitch back to where she belongs

  22. Harshad Warnekar says:

Stephen Fry, +1. Bring him as another genius who can challenge House’s diagnostics and make him go even more crazy.

  23. Yvette says:

Allison Janney or Calista Flockhart. Both very funny females that would do a great job.

  24. Roscoe says:

How about Judi Dench? She would be the perfect as the new Dean of Medicine and is a fellow Brit as well. Of course, they would likely have to pony up a little scratch to get her.

  25. Scott says:

TOM WELLING!!! That would be totally and nothing but AWESOME!

  26. j-doe says:

It’s a shame they killed off Amber. She’d probably be the only female other than Cuddy who could have dealt with House’s temper, tantrums and stunts. Personally I think the season is going to be about House’s downfall. He’ll lose his license or end up back in the rehab clinic he was in during season 6. He needs Wilson to be his friend and Cuddy to forgive him before they wrap it all up.

  27. Mmm Indy says:

Please let it be Tim Roth!

  28. lance mets says:

honestly besides tim roth which wouldnt happen, i dont see any of these people intimidating enough and witty enough to match house.

  29. Jasmine says:

Anybody but Calista Flockhart please…Tom Welling, a young fresh face (and one that is not hard to look at) would be nice as long as there is some little romantic sparks in there somewhere. If this is the last season (say it isn’t so), let’s see him go out having met someone who makes him happy and please let that someone NOT be Sela Ward….too perfect.

  30. Tess says:

    Tim roth all the way

  31. Chris 11 says:

Rene Russo would be great. Think of her character from the Movie “Thomas Crowne Affair”. Tons of sexual tension and n ot afraid to use it to gain an edge!

  32. Maddie says:

I don’t see how House will be back at the hospital. Won’t he go to jail having done what he did to Cuddy?

    • maggie says:

Yes! Unless they make House driving his car into Cuddy’s house a drug-induced dream when he found she left her job and moved away, it seems like House should be in jail for a few years.

    • Lois says:

Maybe House can become the prison Doctor.

  33. Lyla says:

They should bring back Cameron as the boss! She could do the job well.. and it would be inresting to see her as a boss :D Bringig cameron back would kinda fix all that mess they made last season.

    • nikkifarfn says:

Dont u remember they already tried that?!?! and Cameron said she can not be House’s boss cuz she can never say no to him… Cameron was all drama .. i was so glad when she left.. but like i said..they tried that already!

  34. Heather says:

I say promote Wilson and then fill his position with a new female :-)

  35. Tina says:

Please bring Cameron back to the show! She and House would be awesome together.

  36. Raimundo Pérez de Arce C says:

I think that they are not going back to Princeton Plainsboro, they will leave behind the complete cast with the exception of House’s team and Wilson.

  37. James says:

If the producers really wanted to boost ratings they would introduce Dr. Charlie Harper…I mean Dr. Charlie Sheen… He is winning after all and it would give a chance to go against Aston Harper, lol…

  38. Nicole Baptiste says:

Luv the show as is but any one would be great.

  39. Skip says:

I loved both “Smallville” and “Brothers and Sisters” and I am going to miss them both……So I pick,………..Betty White for “House”. He deserves an Old Lady for a Mate. Lol!

  40. Drew says:

Janney would be good but more of the same. Fry or John Cleese would be ratings boosters for their own reasons.

  41. MsChris says:

I would love to see James Spader (late of Boston Legal) as the boss. He is just quirky enough to be a foil for House, yet he can be serious and intense enough to aggravate him. Plus I know 13 would find him attractive (aggravating House even more)!

  42. Angelica says:

Lisa Edelstein is irreplaceable…HOUSE MD can go to hell!

    • Kelly Jo. says:

Oh please she is the most Replaceable of all but thank for the laugh anyway. thank god shes gone and hope is forever :)

  43. nikkifarfn says:

omg i sooo hope they pick Allison Janney.. she is a great actress!! plus she kind of look like Sela Ward.. and imagine how much fun would that be!!! House having to listen to someone who look like the first women who broke his heart!!! and Allison looks like she can put house in his place.. better than LE ever did!!!

  44. viki says:

Bring Mira Sorvino back !! Or a girl of similar to House personality! This is how House will realize how he affects others and ultimately change. Plus, things stay interesting. And make her hot and happy. Not like Cuddy, she turned into a grandma in the final season

  45. jciccone says:

would love to see Tim Roth on there.

hes an amazing actor and needs to be hired somewhere.

to see him and house butt heads would destroy the world

  46. Kat says:

Oh, Stephen Fry PLEASE!!!!! Another teaming of Fry and Laurie would be PERFECT!!!!

  47. Jose Jimenez says:

What about Doogie Howser? He he

  48. Debi says:

I love the thought of janney playing the part! Loved her character on Mr. Sunshine. She would be a perfect match for house, outwitting him, with possibly having a secret crush on him?

  49. Rebecca says:

I would love to see Stephen Fry as the new boss. It would be lovely to see them hit it off instantly.

  50. Amanda says:

I love House but if they even think of putting Janeane Garofalo on the show, I will stop watching it. I can’t stand her!!
