The TVLine-Up: TV Worth Watching This Week

Coming to your screen this week: Nine series premieres, six season openers, three finales, two major sporting events, and a pair of rewatch-worthy comedy repeats. As but a supplement to the awesome features and original reporting TVLine has coming your way, here are 30 programs to keep on your radar.

9 pm Single Ladies (VH1) |
Exec-produced by Queen Latifah, VH1’s first foray into scripted drama programming stars Stacey Dash (Clueless), LisaRaye McCoy (All Of Us) and Charity Shea (The Best Years) as a Carrie, Samantha and Miranda, Atlanta-style.
9 pm Law & Order: CI (NBC) | The “final” season kicks off.
10 pm Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (ABC) | Series premiere: “Move… that… butt!
10 pm Breakout Kings (A&E) | Season finale: When the queen of a drug cartel breaks free — and stays free — while being chaperoned to a funeral, the team comes to suspect there’s a mole amongst them.
10 pm Hard Times of R.J. Berger (MTV) | In back-to-back eps closing Season 2, R.J. tries to tell Amy how he feels, then vies with Max for a school honor.
10 pm Platinum Hit (Bravo) | Let’s call this one “Project Runway with songwriters.” Jewel and Kara “Reporters, Please Don’t Ask Me About Idol, It’s All In My Book” DioGuardi judge.

8 pm America’s Got Talent (NBC) | Host Nick Cannon and judges Sharon Osbourne, Piers Morgan and Howie Mandel all return for Season 6. Think Lee DeWyze will get asked on-stage for this one?
9 pm NBA Finals, Game 1 (ABC) | Can the Mavs take the Heat? If not, they should get out of the kitchen! I’m here all week.
9:30 Traffic Light (Fox) | In the series finale, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell — formerly of Brothers — shows up to tell this Fox comedy’s cast how it’s gonna be.
10 pm Love Handles: Couples In Crisis (Lifetime) | Series premiere: Overweight couples attempt to lick issues that are heavy both literally and emotionally.

8 pm NHL Stanley Cup Finals, Game 1 (NBC) | I don’t think the Lakers are winning this title either.
9 pm Franklin & Bash (TNT) |
Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Raising the Bar) and Breckin Meyer (Road Trip) are brash young lawyers who get recruited to join Malcolm McDowell’s tony firm. Yes, M-PG’s hair is better this time around.
9 pm Haunted Collector (Syfy) | Demonologist John Zaffis and his family of paranormal investigators track down haunted antiques, then stow them away for safe keeping — presumably next to the Ark of the Covenant?
9 pm Mythbusters (Discovery) | Adam and Jamie, perhaps having watched The Matrix one too many times, test to see if a human can dodge a bullet — by SHOOTING. AT. EACH. OTHER.
9 pm Modern Family (ABC) | Repeat reco No. 1: Phil is vexed by a nagging smoke detector, while Claire and Haley get wrapped up in a big misunderstanding.
9:30 pm Cougar Town (ABC) | Repeat reco No. 2: Jennifer Aniston guests as Jules’ hinky shrink.
10 pm Men of a Certain Age (TNT) | I’ve decided to check this series out this season, even at the risk of overidentifying with the subject matter. Won’t you join me?
10 pm The World According to Paris (Oxygen) | The celebutante assured me (photo proof!) that this show will give you “the real Paris Hilton” — unlike her previous TV ventures or that night-vision sex vid.

8:30 pm National Spelling Bee (ESPN) |
Don’t be, like, all Laodicean and blow this off. It’s good sport!
10 pm Love Bites (NBC) | A year plus two weeks to the day that NBC revealed this rom-com anthology series as part of their fall 2010 schedule… here it is. Hopefully, the Judge Ito jokes hold up. Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) stars.
Midnight Children’s Hospital (Adult Swim) | Who said Lisa Edelstein isn’t playing doctor anymore? Why, she’s right here, guest-starring on the Season 3 premiere!

8 pm Flashpoint (CBS) |
A delusional man takes a diner hostage.. but the Vincent and Jules show up with that glowy briefcase.
9 pm Whale Wars (Animal Planet) | Season premiere: Capt. Watson’s latest bid to thwart the Japanese whaling biz is stymied by a fuel leak and an injury to Bob Barker. Sorry, an injury aboard the Bob Barker.
9 pm | Wild Things (Cinemax) | Talk about a champagne room.

7 pm X-Men (FX) |
As the prequel X-Men: First Class hits theaters, see how Mystique evolved from Katniss to John Stamos’ ex-wife.

9 pm MTV Movie Awards |
Jason Sudeikis (SNL) hosts this tribute to rather silly categories scientifically engineered to elicit teenage catcalls.
9 pm Game of Thrones (HBO) | Coming off last night’s pivotal outing, Robb preps for war with Tywin Lannister; Jon clashes with drill instructor Thorne; and Tyrion finds an unlikely alliance.
10 pm The Real L Word (Showtime) | Season 2 premiere: Can a mostly new cast heavy breathe life into this reality series?
10 pm The Glades (A&E) | Season 2 premiere: Jim (Matt Passmore) must solve the murder of a Cuban gangster’s daughter, lest an all-out mob war erupt.
10 pm The Killing (AMC) | Sarah’s son Jack goes missing. But why, when he is so well attended to?!
11 pm Teen Wolf (MTV) | Tyler Posey takes the baton from Michael J. Fox, playing a lycanthrope lad named Scott who has a buddy named Stiles. And that, in today’s angsty, twisty Twilight Diaries age, is where the similarities end.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. JT says:

Is that a new episode of Flashpoint that will be airing ???

  2. Chad says:

Uhmm, game 1 of the Stanly Cup playoffs is Wednesday night, not Saturday.

  3. Fernando says:

Can’t wait to see Love Bites

    • John says:

Me too! After all the drama about the show, I’m looking forward to watching it and seeing what all this fuss has been about.

  4. Mary says:

Game 1 of NBA Finals is Tuesday not Thursday.

  5. nitemar says:

The Killing! Only 3 episodes left, and no word its going to be renewed yet. @0@

  6. Cora says:

    Lisa E. !!!

  7. Ashley says:

Franklin and Bash! I’ll give “Love Bites” a try too – hopefully if it’s good it’ll find a place in the fall line-up.

  8. From Vancouver says:

The NHL game #1 is actually on Wednesday June 1st. Go canucks go!

  9. Mel says:

    What Mary said.

You should move the NBA finals up to Tuesday.

  10. Michael says:

May I respectfully suggest you add ‘The Almost People’, the second half of a two part Doctor Who. It’s entertaining in it’s own right but the last 5 minutes….wow! A doozy of a twist and cliffhanger. You can thank me later. *wink*

  11. AG says:

What about the premier of Man V. Food Nation Wednesdy night on the Travel Channel?

  12. pat says:

how is Daryl “Chill” Mitchell not formally of “Ed”. C’mon Mitovich where’s the Ed love?

    • Matt Webb Mitovich, Editor-at-Large says:

Because then the BROTHERS/failed Fox comedy joke doesn’t work ;)

  13. JGM says:

I’m confused — I thought Law & Order: CI’s premier was a couple of weeks ago, the same night In Plain Sight came back. The premier of Season 10 is listed as having aired on 5/1/11.

    • Jim M. says:

I agree… Why is Law & Order: CI listed here?

    • Matt Webb Mitovich, Editor-at-Large says:

Read closely – this is its *NBC* premiere.

      • JGM says:

I did read carefully — my point was that the listing made it sound like a new episode, but the premier has actually already aired (it even shows as a repeat on the NBC summary). I believe it would have been better to say, “Final season kicks off over on NBC; season has already been airing on USA since May 1st” (or something along those lines). That’s all.

        • Bill Dauphin says:

For “rabbit ears” viewers, it *IS* a new episode, and a season premiere. I have to keep reminding myself that there are still people for whom TV means *broadcast* TV.

  14. Nicole says:

You forgot the mid-series finale of Doctor Who that iars June 4th at 9 on BBCA.

    • Nicole says:

my bad…the mid series finale of Doctor Who airs on the fourth of june in Britain…but there’s still a new episode on this week at nine for those Americans who aren’t internet-savvy

  15. Mel. says:

Glad to see The Glades will be back. I love that show!

    • Jean10brook says:

Me too! Been waiting since last fall for this show to come back on. Jim is hysterically funny and I can’t wait to see what happens with him and Calle when her husband gets out of prison and shows up at her doorstep. Love this show!

  16. Sarah El says:

    Repeats over SYTYCD? shaaame.

    • Rhama says:

      The best show on TV!

    • Cathy says:

I was just thinking that! That’s lame! SYTYCD is so freakin awesome and for people who tout american idol (which is kinda lame) and dancing with the stars, to not have SYTYCD is just wrong!!

  17. Ashton says:

Dang you know it’s summer time when the most interesting thing on that list is basketball, and I don’t even particularly care for the teams playing.

  18. Tahoe Mike says:

Y’all are missing out on TREME, the best show on TV(HBO). Why no love for it on this site??

  19. Ram510 says:

How is Men of a Certain Ahe not on the worth watching list?

    • Bill Dauphin says:

MoaCA *is* listed (maybe an update after your comment?), but it shocks me that Matt is only just now ready to “check out” what I consider the best scripted series on TV. It’s been a revelation to me: I knew, of course, that Andre Braugher was a great actor from his time on Homicide: Life on the Streets, but who knew Ray Romano and Scott Bakula could find such depth and texture?

  20. JohnDoe says:

NBA Finals for me. Can’t stand to watch Howie Mandel for more than 30 seconds at a time, so I probably won’t be watching AGT this year.

  21. Diane says:

I agree – Treme is the best show on TV as of now (oh, and Game of Thrones too!)

  22. Amy says:

    Looking forward to Love Bites.

  23. jghjufyh says:

Google in the input: = ==you can find many brand names, even more surprising is that he will sell you the unexpected o(∩_∩)o

  24. Intelliwoman says:

Law and Order CI is listed because its the network premiere. It premiered on USA Cable a few weeks ago

  25. Bob says:

Mythbusters has always followed the “Go Big or Go Home” philosophy, so shooting at each other is just the next logical progression.

  26. Ky says:

Good Lord, there is seriously nothing on TV this summer.

  27. solo1861 says:

So Game of Thrones, Doctor Who and….nothing else. It’s gonna be a long summer without Mad men.

  28. Teresa Conti says:

Can’t believe you skipped the Civil War programs on the History Channel this week. They are certainly worth recording for watching after your basketball and hockey.

  29. S says:

About time for Love Bites! Will be watching on Thursday!!
