Ashton Kutcher Confirms Two and a Half Men Gig, But Insists 'I Can't Replace Charlie Sheen'

Get More: Casting News, News, Scoop

CBS is officially confirming that Ashton Kutcher has finalized a deal to replace Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men — a suggestion that was first proposed on this site three months ago.

Sure he was one of a half-dozen names we floated, but we still deserve props, dammit!

The Kutcher news comes two days after Deadline.com reported that Hugh Grant rejected a lucrative offer to join CBS’ No. 1 sitcom.

“I can’t wait to get to work with this ridiculously talented 2.5 team and I believe we can fill the stage with laughter that will echo in viewers’ homes,” said Kutcher in a statement. “I can’t replace Charlie Sheen but I’m going to work my ass off to entertain the hell out of people!”

We are so lucky to have someone as talented, joyful and just plain remarkable as Ashton joining our family,” enthused Men creator Chuck Lorre. “Added to that is the deep sigh of relief knowing that our family stays together.  If I was any happier, it’d be illegal.”

This marks Kutcher’s first series gig since That ’70s Show went off the air in 2006. Details regarding his Men character have not been disclosed. Chances are CBS is holding that piece of news until upfront day on May 18.

What does Sheen have to say about all this? “Kutcher is a sweetheart and a brilliant comedic performer … Oh wait, so am I!”
he cracked to TMZ, before adding, “Enjoy the show America. Enjoy seeing a 2.0 in the demo every Monday, [Warner Bros.].”

Thoughts? Has Men traded up… or down?

  • Sorry but no thanks…

the only reason the show worked (for his very large fanbase) was because of the relationship between all the characters, the only way the change could work was if they just chaged the actor, but not the character

without the Charlie character, there´s no reason for the other ones to be the way they used to be (without his older brother, THE OWNER OF THE HOSE, Alan has no need to be the underdog, etc)

so, if they change one character, they will change all of them

  • This is hilarious. I might actually watch the show now.

  • My first thought was “yuck.” But I’ll at least watch a few episodes before I come to any conclusions. I don’t think Ashton is half the actor Sheen or Hugh Grant is, and I never would have cast him at all but it just might work.

  • I think ashton will do well on this show….I wasn’t a big fan before of men but i’m going to check it out now I think. I’m curios as to how they will fit him in the show.

  • This is AWESOME news!

First i thought “wtf, Hugh Grant??” then they flip it around and get freaking MICHAEL KELSO, now that’s WINNING.

    • I know. Brilliant! I can see him as a womanizer and yet be immature enough to interact with Jake to Alan’s dismay. Perfect.

  • I personally think its a big bonus ashton joining 2 and a half men,hes movies are good, and that 70s show was awesome. And all the talk of ashton unable carrying the show is ignorant, charlie sheen didnt carry the show,he was simply a part of the show, just like ashton will be.
The writers are what makes two and a half men funny, and with the talent of writers they have im sure ashton will do a awesome job.
I wasnt the biggest fan of the show but i did like it and i thought it was getting a bit dull,so, thumbs up for the introduction of ashton joining two and a half men, i can not wait.

  • I don’t watch the show, but I will say I’m more inclined to check it out with Kutcher on board. He was always hilarious as Kelso, and if he brings his charm to this new character it could be good. It’ll be hard to tell until it actually happens on screen.

  • Definitively a trade down.

Sure, it´s difficult to replace Charlie Sheen but Kutcher? His sitcom qualitfication various between 70 shows and jakeass!

I don´t know, did they ask Emilio Estevez as well? If he might be the best if you will go on with the same charme.

But the coice for Kutcher shows me that there going to start it up totally different. I won´t watch it.

  • Really? Ashton? REALLY????

I hope Mister Lorre has some tricks up his sleeve to make this work … cause I don’t see how this could and would work.

REALLY? ASHTON *bleeping* KUTCHER? To replace Charlie?

I predict an Epic Fail this autumn!

  • Charlie stays in England with Rose.(thus leaving a chance for him to return if this mess ever gets fixed.) He sells his house to Ashton’s character ( an enterprising young business man who created a facebook like website and sold it for billions) with the provision that Alan and Jake get to stay. As a cherry on the sunday, Evelyn sells the house for Charlie and doesn’t tell Alan, thus earning a huge commission and the hatred of her youngest son forever.

  • I think this is one of the biggest mistakes that CBS has ever made, I’m sure that the show will be cancelled with in one season of Ashton being on it. This is going to kill the show. CBS should be doing what they can to get Charlie back on the show, if they want to keep it as the number 1 sitcom they are going to have to. Ashton does not have enough talent to pull off acting on this show.

  • I think Ashton Kutcher will turn out to be Charlies son that he knew nothing about.(hes slept with 1000+ women and no accidental pregnancies?) It could happen…

  • Charlie was always the worst part of the show. As long as the supporting cast stays and writers, etc the show will still be funny. I think it will be a nice change.

  • I think that it’s a strategic move by Lorre et al because, if done well, it could refresh the show and take it in a new direction. I had liked the idea of Hugh Grant on the show as well.

  • They should of just canclled the show, i most likely will not watch it anymore.

I watch Two and a half men every weekend when i go see my dad, i even watch the ones i’ve seen a dozen times and the repeats just because it makes me laugh beyond belife.

    But now, well it’s dead.

Shame… wish Charlie Sheen would get his act together and come back.

  • Funny thing is, I remember years ago when people screamed about Charlie Sheen replacing Michael J. Fox on Spin City! Surprise, the show went an extra two seasons with the new guy. You never know how these things play out. Give Kutcher a chance.

Comment by RAGGEDT – May 13, 2011 09:43 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • When did people “scream” about Charlie replacing Michael J Fox? Everyone knew that Fox was leaving for health reasons and wanted the show to go on without him.

Comment by Lois – May 13, 2011 10:04 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Nobody screamed when Sheen replaced Fox. Michael J. Fox wanted the show to continue and suggested Charlie Sheen to replace him. They brought Sheen in when Fox was still on so they could have a smooth transition. Fox remained as a producer on the show.

  • Michael Ausiello, I wouldn’t brag about this. Ashton Kutcher is a horrible actor. Do you really want any credit for this when the show tanks with him as the lead?

  • I think Ashton is not a bad choice. I kind of figured the show was kapoot. And this is more interesting than kapoot. There are far worse shows on TV.

  • So…Ashton will be playing Jake’s younger brother…?

Comment by Don – May 13, 2011 10:51 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • As a comedy artist Charlie Sheen is unmatched,I don’t think there is any other actor who can bring in so much humour into a sitcom like 2.5 Men, as Charlie has done for 8 years. Ashton is one awesome dude and he has a great knack for comedy, but these two actors are way different in their approaches towards comedy. While Charlie uses his gifted million dollar facial expressions, Ashton mainly entertains using his funny body languages and his stereotypical tone.

I think the ninth season will be a hit, no matter what, merely coz of the hype already on. The way I see it, Chuck Lorre is definitely gonna kill ‘Charlie Harper’ and while Alan is hoping to inherit Charlie’s house and wealth, comes the illegitimate son of Charlie’s from an 80′s drunken night. He’ll live at the Malibu beach House ‘Charlie Style’ . If this is how Lorre plans it, there is immense scope for comedy.

  • Well, guess it came down to a last-minute “who’s available and willing to work with Chuck Lorre”. The “creative differences” with Hugh Grant probably all revolved around Mr. Lorre. Still not sure if it would have worked with him, either (Brits on American TV don’t fare too well – look at Hugh Laurie and his impersonation of an American).

  • It’s not really my cup of tea, so to speak, but I definitely think that the show has a better character with Ashton Kutcher as they did with Charlie Sheen, given his recent erratic behaviour. I think it will boost the show and draw even more viewers. I wish them all the best.

  • I have never watched the show, even though I love Jon Cryer, because Charlie Sheen has always given me the creeps. Big time. I liked Ashton Kutcher on “That 70s Show”, so maybe I’ll give it a chance now. I’m just soooooo glad they didn’t reward that egomaniac for his pathetic behavior.

  • I can’t imagine 2.5 men without Charlie Sheen! I like Kutcher as much as the next guy and I probably will check out the new episode(s)but Charlie (Harper) was the craziest and funniest character on the show next to Bertha. Alan is annoying as hell, Jake doesn’t really have much to do.
    We’ll see!

  • Ashton Kutcher… I actually plan on watching this show now. Ashton is actually funny, in a non train-wreck kind of way. I know that’ll be difficult for Sheen fans to grasp, laughing at the comedy in the show instead of the tragedy that is Charlie Sheen.
