Fall TV Preview

Sarah Michelle Gellar's CBS Thriller Gets Green Light – But There's a Twist!

Get More: Fall TV Preview, News

Ringer, the very buzzy pilot in which Buffyverse queen Sarah Michelle Gellar plays dual roles, is sure to pack jaw-droppers, but here’s one twist nobody saw coming: Originally eyed by CBS for the fall, the series instead has found a home on The CW.

Exclusive: Nikita Boss Solves Finale Mysteries, Shares Scoop on (Probable) Season 2

As first reported by TVLine sister site Deadline.com, Ringer has received a green light, but to air on The CW (which is co-owned by CBS). It marks the first fall pickup OK’d by brand-new CW president Mark Pedowitz. And we think we like him lots already.

Tom Welling on Smallville Finale: ‘People Are Really Going to Like What We Did’

Ringer stars SMG as Bridget, a young woman on the run from the mob who thinks she’ll find safe harbor by posing as her wealthy twin, Siobhan. Thing is, sis has a bounty on her life as well!

The rest of the cast includes Kristoffer Polaha (Life Unexpected) as Henry, the out-of-work husband of Siobhan’s BFF who happens to be having an affair with Siobhan; Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) as Siobhan’s husband; and Nestor Carbonell (Lost) as the FBI agent in charge of keeping Bridget safe so she can testify against the mob.

    • Loving this new CW guy already. Now what is the best show to pair this with – Nikita me thinks!!! So we put Nikita and Ringer together The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle. We need a comic book type show like Smallville (RIP – you will be missed) to pair with Supernatural. Americas Next Top Model should be reserved for the off season in my opinion with some other reality show.) Thats 3 out of 5 days. I’m all in favor of dumping Gossip Girl, 90210 and One Tree Hill and I think its a done deal that Hellcats isn’t going to be renewed. Unfortunately Dawn whats her face screwed us by renewing them so we’re stuck with them for at least the first half of the season. After that fingers crossed!! In conclusion love the new guy -LOL!!!

    • I’d say its bad news for CW pilots and Hellcats. Nikita/One Tree Hill will most likely be picked up but any pilot that’s not the Secret Circle is probably sweating it out. I’d say that only one other pilot will be picked up besides Ringer and Secret Circle, possibly Awakening???

Comment by Kris – May 13, 2011 03:03 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Definitely not great news. Still I don’t see many CW shows getting picked up as none of them have buzz. Secret Circle might just to be a companion piece to Vampire Diaries and I could see Nikita becoming a companion piece to this show. Hellcats I would say is in the most danger. They can have ‘supernatural’ Thursday, ‘kickass chicks’ Wednesday. Actually this might help Nikita’s chances by just a tiny bit…just because I could see it going so well with this show.

      9 – Nikita

  • OMG! SMG IS BACK! YESSSSSSSSSSS!
i have mixed reactions to the CW thing. SMG is WAY too good and talented to be anywhere near the CW. the ratings for every show are very low and SMG deserves more viewers on her own big show. but on the other hand, CW numbers are so low that the show as better chances to survive there than brutal CBS.

  • This is definitely interesting in the competition it now creates for the CW’s bubble shows.

I really want Nikita back and I really want CW to pick up Secret Circle (though I’ll be *shocked* if they don’t with all the news it’s getting). But they don’t have *that* many empty slots right now. Mmmmh =/

Interesting to see SMG back at WB/CW. I wonder how she feels about that. I also wonder how many fans (like me) the CW still carries from the old Buffy days.

Comment by Fiona – May 13, 2011 02:41 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • The WB and UPN were where the show that made Sarah Michelle Gellar a star thrived, it’s only fair that the network that resulted from their merger should be home to her big return to TV.

The Secret Circle is considered a lock and is the only CW pilot I want to go to series anyway, so I don’t really mind that this means one less spot for another new show.

Looking forward to catching the show in the fall!

    • SMG will play both Bridget and Siobhan in flashbacks. In present day, Bridget believes Siobhan to be dead, but there are hints that Siobhan might actually be alive, so SMG will kinda be doing like Nina Dobrev on TVD with the dual roles of Elena/Katherine.

Comment by Harrison – May 13, 2011 03:00 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Awesome!! SMG needs to be back on our television screens. It’s probably better that the show will air on The CW, since they have much lower expectations as far as ratings go. It’s gotten so much tougher for new shows nowadays. Fewer of them are breakout hits. “Ringer” could be an excellent show that doesn’t attract enough viewers and then it would be pulled quickly from CBS’s schedule. This way, it’s much more likely to get a full season and a fair shot.

  • I am so happy that SMG will be back on TV. I understand the concerns about the network though, but maybe it’ll have a positive effect and allow the show time to catch on and amass a strong following. Don’t really care about what happens to Nikita, as long as Supernatural stays put and Ringer kicks butt, I’m good!

  • SMG should feel majorly double-crossed right now. And pull out of Ringer before the night’s over. She signed up for the pilot for the purpose of it airing on CBS. Not a NINO (Network in Name Only) like the See-Dub, who still willingly airs One Tree Hill 4 years after it stopped being relevant or good. Goodbye, Ringer drawing 10 million viewers on any consistent basis. Say hello to audiences 25% of that total, if that. This whole crap of ABC Studios pulling out of financing the series also reeks. Deadline.com saying it “cannot produce a series for the economics of the CW.” Wasn’t much of an issue for Mark Pedowitz, new CW president, when he was the former boss of ABC Studios, which produced Reaper under his watch with no problems for the “economics of the CW”.

Welcome back to TV, SMG. Taking it up the butt. Shame, CBS. Shame.

  • Hey, this could maybe help The CW become what it was when it was The WB? .. This is a good direction imo! Could The CW possibly be saying goodbye to all their teen drama’s? If the ‘Ringer’ went on CBS and didn’t do well it be canceled but if it at least gets 2 mil on The CW its safe. I’d say this is great news!

  • I’ll be glad to have SMG back on television, but that two line premise sounds incredibly silly.

    Here it is again:

“Ringer stars SMG as Bridget, a young woman on the run from the mob who thinks she’ll find safe harbor by posing as her wealthy twin, Siobhan. Thing is, sis has a bounty on her life as well!”

    Uhm… wow.

  • They should pair Ringer with Nikita, Hart of Dixie with One Tree Hill, The Secret Circle with Vampire Diaries, 90210 with Gossip Girl, Awakening with Supernatural. That’s 5 days of airing and put America’s next top model on on like saturday or something…

Comment by Jimmy – May 13, 2011 04:34 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I doubt they’ll move SPN off of Fridays and also doubt that they’ll put a pilot on a Friday night. They’re not gonna put their new baby TVD on Friday’s either, and I don’t really see them messing with the GG/90210 line up. So that pretty much leaves Nikita or OTH as a paring for SPN (with an outside chance of them moving ANTM, though a reprise seems much more likely if ANTM goes to the slot). I’m guessing Nikita (assuming it is renewed) joins SPN on Friday nights.

  • First off, I love Sarah Michelle Gellar. Second, the CW isn’t a bad network, it’s just aimed at teenagers, and that audience is much smaller than the adult audience. That may seem backwards, but it’s true. I really was hoping that Heavenly and Cooper and Stone would be picked up, along with Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie, though I can’t see that happening now. But I am very happy that SMG is returning to the small screen. I think it was a huge bonehead move when she decided to leave Buffy. If this show (Ringer) is a success, this would be her first major role in like eight years.

Comment by Walter – May 13, 2011 07:02 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • You’re so right, Walter, about the network, those shows, and SMG. I think it’s a good move on her part to return, after all, like most of us earthlings, she ain’t gettin’ any younger. And in showbiz, once you hit mid-30′s, it’s like dog years, man. She’s smart to grab that ring while she still can.

Comment by april-ann – May 13, 2011 07:27 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I guess SMG can’t escape the WB/UPN/CW draft!

But this pick-up seems scary since there’s so little spots left for The CW. And have you seen how Nikita’s been doing in the ratings? Such a critical darling with so little viewers! :(

Most of all, I absolutely love the fact that CBS passed on this show. I know they like to play it safe with procedurals, but really? Not even an exception this year?

  • In the direction the new CW president is going, I think he will keep Nikita on the air. It’ll fit in perfectly. I am all for less teen drama shows with the exception of TVD and GG. I’m hoping the new SMG show will bring in a lot of old Buffy fans. We need all the viewers we can get!

I would be excited to even see shows getting in the 4 million range again. I’m sick of seeing the 1 and 2 million.

AND PLEASE, NEW PRESIDENT, CHANGE THE PROMO SETUP AND JUST THE OVERALL LOOK OF THE CW. I WANT THAT WB FEELING BACK. :(
