Breaking: ABC Cancels Brothers & Sisters, V, Mr. Sunshine, Four Others

Get More: Cancellations, News, Scoop

Friday the 13th turned out to be doomsday for Brothers & Sisters and V: ABC has axed both shows. The Alphabet net also pulled the plug on rookie series No Ordinary Family, Off the Map, Better With YouDetroit 1-8-7 and Mr. Sunshine.

Though, as Deadline reported, the network was trying to find a way to bring back B&S for an abridged final season, in the end, the suits elected to free up their post-Desperate Housewives time slot for a new show. As a result, last Sunday’s B&S season finale is now, retroactively, the series’ finale.

V, meanwhile, was on the upswing. Its ratings remained so-so, but after a shaky start, it returned for a second season on solid ground creatively. Heck, it even added to the cast the delectable Jane “Diana” Badler from the ’80s version.

So, are you surprised that the Walkers have popped their last cork? That the aliens are no longer a threat? And which dearly-departed ABC series will you miss the most?

  • I wish the networks will do a special movie or show to wrap up cancel shows that leave you hanging

from now on i will not waste my time watching shows in the future and wait till the season is over and then watch them. this way i will know if it is worth investing all my valuable time into a show.

because you wasted all that time and no conclusion.

this way you can screw them rather than you because they don’t get your eyeballs for the ads during prime time run and the money associated with it

  • yes i so agree, if your going to make a show seasons you got to leave it finsihed !!! isnt that the whole idea of seasons. END the season if you are not shaw on making a new one. I loved V and thats what my topic is about, you strung this out to long, in the old V 1980s, total viewing was 7 to 8 hours, ridiculous making all those episodes and basing any future episodes and previous season. its pure GREED !!! MONEY MONEY MONEY !!! they dont make these shows for us they make it for themselvs.
The Event has captured me from start till now, very clever writing, you should have used these writers for V, seems to me the writers for V was writing it forthemselves. im so disapointed that V has been cancelled. leaving a cliff hanger like that. Bad writing.

  • Bottom Line: ABC doesn’t give a crap about it audience. They have no loyalty. They want shows to win their time slot or they are history. They have done this constantly in the last few years. And the fact they wouldn’t do an abridged final to tie up loose ends is contempt for their viewers. I watch very few ABC shows because you can’t trust those greedy B******s! If it’s not DWTS, it ain’t worth putting on, at least to them. They even killed 2 of their Soaps. I hope, like you know what, it bites them big time.

  • Poor ABC — they just lost me on Sunday nights. The only reason I watch DH is because of B&S

It is really sad when the networks drop interesting shows, and you have to go to cable and Netflix to find decent series…

  • V was a bad-ass remake amoungst all this re-make sputum garbage bile and lack of ideas society has become and accepted (G.D. psych drugs) And its cheap to make with all the CGI. Hot women, cool gadgets, action, blood and guts it had it all. FIddlesticks!

  • Along with the cancellation of “All My Children,” ABC has now put the last nail in the coffin for me. Brothers and Sisters and DHW were the only nighttime ABC shows I watched, and now the powers that be have taken off B&S. I will continue to watch DHW, but will wait for the reruns on Lifetime now. Adios ABC. I HOPE SOME OTHER CHANNEL PICKS UP BROTHERS AND SISTERS. PLEASE!

  • It is so sad to see Brothers and Sisters not there anymore. I love the cast. They will be missed. Bit by bit I not looking at television anymore as the good shows are being cut due to budgetary reason. I will also miss No ordinary Family and Off the map. I loved those shows and had my friends look at them. I am left with one show to look at Modern Family. If that is cut…it will be good bye ABC!!!

  • V was my favorite, but I also liked watch brothers and sisters and off the map, I think V was doomed from the beginning, most people don’t like a show like that, it wasn’t the right fit for ABC.

Brothers and sister was getting old, it was great, the actor, everything but it was the same old same old, off the map was so so.

I´m from Buenos Aires and there are some chapters we haven´t watch here yet, because of the different stations between the two countries, etc, so I though it was a missunderstanding when somebody told me today!!couldn´t belive these will be the last Brothers and Sisters´ wednesday for me!
It was my favorite show, please uncanceled!! Here in the South will miss you too!

  • How do you cancel B&S without giving us a SERIES FINALE! This show has been on for 5 years and I think it is just wrong of ABC to just cancel it without giving us 1 final year to shore everything up!
Stunts like this makes me never want to watch television shows again…oh wait, there really is nothing good to watch because everyone seems to like this Reality TV CRAP!!!!!

  • I for one can not believe that ABC cancelled V, i am sorry but i refuse to watch any other ABC programming from now on. How can you just leave a show on a cliffhanger and keep people wondering forever what could have been?. I know it’s only a tv show but i am so disgusted with this it’s not even funny. Despite what the morons at ABC thought, V was an excellent show. I would hope that another network could maybe pick up the show, maybe just for a few more episodes, just to finish off the series PROPERLY. Who knows though maybe some network will cast pity on this show and pick it up (*caugh* nbc, fox, cbs) but it does not look good :(. Screw you ABC, you are forever listed as my least favorite network.

  • Go to hell, ABC. You took away LOST and now V? You didn’t even allow them to tie up the loose ends for their viewers! What the f*ck is wrong with you? This is why I now refuse to watch ABC ever again. V was the only show that kept me tied to that station after LOST ended, and now there is no reason for me to endorse a station that has proved they care more about making money for themselves than doing what their viewers want. I hope CBS picks up V, that is a station that continuously gives viewers what they want (NCIS). Long live V, and f*ck you, ABC.

  • so it seems that all that people wanna watch these days are a thousand versions of the SAME cop show, and crappy reality TV? So that means we simply cannot keep amazing different, well written shows like B&S, Off the Map and V? talk about underestimating your audience! Every network these days is only interested in making easily digestible television with instantly high ratings, quality is just not part of the equation anymore now is it?

Sick to death of watching your programs for you to decide to pull them part way through.
And you wonder why ratings get hit, people don’t watch knowing you won’t finish them.

Why did it have to get cut. When there are so many crap tv shows out

Does anyone else think that may be a lot of the shows are getting crap ratings cause people are watching the tv programes on the net?

I am so sad that brothers and sisters have gone. Really hope they bring it back one day. Sigh!

  • Off the Map was a show I loved to watch with my tweenies. We bonded and discussed a great many things. Though a bit “sexy” at times, it gave us good opportunity to relate as “girls”, speak medical translation (I work for a radiologist), and ethics in general. Plus “Keaton” was a nice “Saywer” substitute. My daughter had her heart set on themeing her upcoming birthday party, but she is afraid no one will will “get it” since its no longer a show. Thanks ABC! Maybe you can make more shows like Modern Family that reinforce narcissistic subcultures instead of learning about other cultures in places like South America (yes I know it wasn’t filmed there).

  • I’m so disappointed of ABC for the cancellation of V, that was my favorite show in years. V was one of the few shows that like me. I’m a fan of Sci-Fi and shows like this aren’t seen in years. The X-Files was the last GOOD program of this kind. And with such good ratings, how is it possible cancel it. Is a shame.

  • Yet again, ABC has proven that all of its taste is in its …! First of all, they couldn’t hang on to a good fantasy/sci-fi program if it were handed to them on a silver platter. Case in point: V, Defying Gravity, Life on Mars. Need I say more? Secondly, ABC holds onto old series that have had their time to shine and don’t exactly contain stellar acting and dialogue over newer series with brilliant actors, quick and insightful dialogue, and interesting characters. Case in point: Detroit 187. Really ABC? Your executives are about as imaginative and creative as a bag of turnips. You maintain a death grip on programs such as The Bachelor/Bachelorette yet you dump a show that could be as gritty and interesting as NYPD Blue. Anyone who would consider cutting Michael Imperioli loose should have their head examined. I think I’ll be sticking to cable TV from now on.

Comment by Linda D'Adamo – July 21, 2011 01:22 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Starting and later cancelling so many series is a waste of money and a waste of fresh scripts, and also an insult to those people who watch the programs. Then try to serve those unfinished products to other channels across the planet, and sellig them in DVD is a scam.

Better if the producers end the making of tv shows as they cant get enought audience ratings, not as they want. Or much better if film makers sell by contract the last season before starting the first season.

  • To cancel V was a very poor move to have made by ABC.

We are talking about reviving an old classic TV series, watched my millions around the world, to have been brought into the 21st centuary with stunning video and graphic effects.

It was in 2008/09 I was thinking they should of made a remake after remembering the classic should of been broadcasted on UK TV station Sy-Fi, that same year the classic 80′s V was broadcasted.

Seing the graphics wasnt as hard hitting and stunning compared to modern day video editing I hoped for a remake to be made some time in the future

In March 2010 It was announced in the UK that V would be premiering on Sy-Fi, I was excited to want to see what stunning effects will come to the screen and what story lines.

Due to recession I was not able to keep my cable subscription up, however as tables have turned again, I have started to watch the series online.

At Episode 7 of series 2
It was exciting to see Jane Baddler (Diana) in the new series, fantastic storyline, visual effects and the beautiful Laura Vandervoort (Lisa) keeps me watching, shes the 21st Centuary Serah Michelle Gellar (Buffy)

It is a shame they cancelled it so soon and a big major dissapointment that ABC revived a classic to then end it soo soon.

    Like the saying goes…
“You shouldnt start what you cant finish”

Hopefully another network will take on the cast and classic and continue providing brilliant storylines

One flaw I have noticed however…
With Diana in this new series, the story makes refference to the past, (15yrs ago) a lot.

Because Jane Baddlers character is the same as within the original V series, it is confusing

Is this a continuation in the future from the 1980s version
(If so its not been 15yrs its been 27)
and if so why cant people on earth remember the massive ships in the sky etc

If its not a continuation I think ABC or the New network need to provide some clarity as to ABCs previous screwup

Other than that 1 flaw, the series is doing really well

  • I cannot believe that we, the viewers were hit with the fact that ABC has cancelled Brothers and Sisters. I have never missed an episode and am disgusted that we were not given a season to prepare and follow the characters knowing it would be the end. With Grey’s Anatomy going down the tube, Brothers and Sisters was one of my last links to ABC. Thanks ABC for making it that much easier to say good-bye, to you that is!!!!!!

  • I’m seriously getting sick and tired of the major networks coming out with a great sci-fi show (V) not realizing up front that it’s not going to get huge ratings. Their development models should be to in advance have a deal with another network (scy-fi channel for example) so that they can introduce the show to a larger audience on the major network and if it doesn’t take off or if the ratings start to dip, then start airing it on the cable network.
That way die hards like myself aren’t constantly disappointed when we don’t get stuck with a cliff hanger and no resolution.

ABC seems to be notorious for this.. anyone remember Flash Forward?

Oh and RE: Brother’s and Sisters… I only watched Desperate Housewives because it was on before Brother’s and Sisters. I”m sure I’m not alone. I’m curious what DH’s ratings will look like when people like myself stop watching in the fall

  • I’m very bummed by the news of the cancellation of V (kind of expected it), Brothers and Sisters (very unexpected), All My Children (what??!?), and One Life to Live (whoa!). I also got invested in No Ordinary Family (cancelled), The Gates (cancelled), and Happy Town (cancelled) – all cancelled after one season. What is going on with ABC? I am finished with ABC – can’t rely on them to stick with any series anymore. I can’t stand reality shows and now I expect Desperate Housewives and Castle to end this year. Why not? They are the last two ABC shows left that I watch. No more ABC. Sad thing is I don’t think they’ve learned their lesson yet.

Unlike other shows that only have bad actors, bad story lines, and an exaggerated use of sex, V captured my attention because it was not just an ordinary show, it had a different perspective. Not just “omg he cheated on me and now I’m going to cheat on him” or “i love him but he doesn’t love me”. It was original and creative. Please put V back on the air.
