Idol Leaderboard: Ranking the Top 5!

The American Idol Top 5 will tackle two songs apiece tonight — one from the ’60s and one “current” hit — during tonight’s 90-minute “Now & Then”-themed telecast. (Click here to check out my dream setlist for the evening.) I’ve taken the liberty of ranking the remaining quintet of contestants, so check out my countdown, then head to our poll to vote for your favorite, and hit the comments to justify your pick. And for all my Idol news and commentary, follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV.

5. Jacob Lusk (Last Week No. 6) | Yep, he’s managed to go further in the competition than any of the following former contestants: Jennifer Hudson, Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, Katelyn Epperly, Aloha Mischeaux, Pia Toscano, Nadia Turner, Kellie Pickler, Mandisa, Ju’Not Joyner, Alexis Grace, Ricky Braddy, Kendra Chantelle, Robbie Rosen, Nikko Smith, and Lilly Scott. So what the hell do I know?

4. Lauren Alaina (Last Week No. 4) | Now starring in the Disney original picture From Lauren to Lauren, about an insecure girl with a powerful voice whose loyal Uncles Nigel and Jimmy give her the confidence she needs to make her dreams come true. Frankly, we’d rather just see her pick a good song and sing the bejeezus out of it.

3. Haley Reinhart (Last Week No. 3) | Suffered earpiece and sound-mix issues but still delivered a soulful, emotionally connected “Beautiful.” This, of course, prompted Randy to fling his negative dung, and Jimmy to follow up on results night with a pointed criticism and a prediction of possible elimination. They’ve already run her over with the bus, but now they’re backing it up to make sure she’s truly dead!

2. Scotty McCreery (Last Week No. 1) | Followed uninspired “Swingin'” with a tender, textured “You’ve Got a Friend” — his best live performance to date. Naturally, Jimmy responded by questioning the power of subtlety. Here’s hoping Scotty wasn’t listening.

1. James Durbin (Last Week No. 2) | Never hit bottom three, and had his “Idol Moment” during Carole King Week. Consistent, and consistently entertaining. Momentum is on his side.

Okay, TVLine readers, it’s your turn. Vote for your favorite in our Idol Leaderboard poll, then sound off in the comments on how you’d rank the whole Top 5. Ready, set, prognosticate!

  1. Ryan says:

Was I one of the first 14 to vote? No votes for Lauren or Jacob?

    • bottom says:

Those two are going to be the bottom two this week. And this time Ryan better say who the bottom is!

      • Stacey says:

Don’t be too sure about that since Hayley has been in the bottom 3 the most… She got saved (although Ryan never officially said who was in the bottom) last week because of performing last. I happen to think she was in the bottom but it wouldn’t have been that drama filled if Casey, Hayley and Jacob were in the bottom. So they put Scotty in to scare him to not play safe. And see how his fans would respond this week.

But this week hasn’t played out yet, so who knows what will happen. With two songs each. They have an additional chance to save themselves or sabotage themselves. I happen to think Lauren is doing better that many people think. She has a large fanbase on twitter… I am sure country likes her voice…

        • Jason S says:

I disagree I think LAuren was bottom two last week and the producers thought it would destroy her confidence yet again if she found out. Lauren is probably the biggest disappointment of early hype since Lil Rounds and Andrew Garcia. If only Simon had been around to point that out she would have been gone before Pia and Casey. I really don’t know what they see in her. Do they think she’s the next Taylor Swift? Sorry Taylor is popular cause she’s beautiful not because she can sing and LAuren doen’t have that. Do they think she’s the next Miley Cyrus? Miley is a one in a million who had a sitcom to get popular. LAuren is not as likeable as Miley.

          • Stacey says:

We’ll never know about last week’s results. I do think she’s a lot more popular than her DialIdol or other fans think. Yeah I think she could cater to the Taylor Swift country genre with Scotty taking more of the traditional country route. But, Lauren will have the fact she can sing almost anything. She does have a powerful voice. She just needs a little more confidence.

The beginning of the competition really knocked her for a loop. All the expectations and the brutal opinions on the internet, backlash. She came out strong with the Reba song but she sorta retreated.

Also now that they have two phone lines, and two songs, it’s hard to know how any of them did last week. And given the storms last week, probably why they didn’t reveal any results because the storms could have thrown all the results for a loop.

  2. Fracas says:

James Durbin #1? This isn’t karaoke at the local bar.

    • Karen says:

    • Corey says:

ya i know! he can pull of “the scream” occasionally, but soon it just gets annoying. and, when he tries to be soft and take a melody, he has trouble keeping the tune up and in key. good singer? sure. BEST IN AMERICA? no.

    • Suzanne says:

Scotty has been winning the vote since the finals. No way that James is ahead. It’s like Clay Aiken all over again–I wonder if everyone voting for anyone but Scotty will vote for his opponent in the final?

  3. SpyKi says:

  4. Inge says:

They can try to run her over as much as they like but Haley pulled out the secret weapon during the Q&A ……. She has big support on her side.

    • Milly says:

If you think all the Glamberts are going to change their opinions about who they like now, you don’t know them very well at all.

      • Valerie says:

Yes, we know them. They will vote for Haley, and tell Adam by Twitter and Facebook. It will make each of them, Adam’s favorite fan.

        • @galaga6846 says:

Valerie said “Yes, we know them. They will vote for Haley, and tell Adam by Twitter and Facebook. It will make each of them, Adam’s favorite fan.”
HAHAHAHAHA!!! Totally, 100% right on. But, seriously, Haley was awesome tonight. A Haley/James finale would make for some STELLAR TV. Talk about entertaining!!!

      • Natalie says:

And who exactly do you think most Glamberts like, his fourth-rate tribute act? Wake up and smell the rip-off.

        • Milly says:

Actually, most of the Glamberts I know (and I know quite a few, being one myself) like James the most. I know in the beginning they didn’t b/c of his perceived self-comparison, but he’s just closer to what they’re used to and like. Mostly, I’m just saying that Glambert are overall very stubborn and won’t change their minds, especially the Idol watching Glamberts, just b/c Adam likes a contestant. If that was the case, Pia would still be here as he was raving about her in the beginning multiple times on twitter.

          • Candy says:

He mentioned Pia once and also mentioned Jacob at around the same time (but I’m not surprised that his admiration for Jacob waned pretty quickly and it was nothing to do with his singing) but in no way did he speak about Pia or any of them as he has about Haley.

Most of Adam’s fans don’t like James for the very reason you say those you know like – he’s simply not very good at what he is trying to do. He has neither the range (we can all scream a high note, that doesn’t make it singing), power (his high register and wails are reed thin) or control (even his middle register is hit and miss) to pull off rock.

I think you’re a James fan who is thinking wishfully.

          • Lauren says:

@Candy Lol you should go back and read my comments throughout tv line, I am most certainly not a James fan. I just think of the ones left, he at least puts on a show and makes for good tv, even if he’s not the best singer left. And tbh, this show isn’t about singing anymore as the most important thing or the past couple of winner wouldn’t be doing so poorly. I think James is decent, entertaining, and will fit in with the last two winners as fails coming off Idol.

And the Pia comments were about as much as his Haley ones at the time, at least on twitter. His comments only got more in depth when he was asked in a red carpet interview to discuss his favorites and the show in general in more detail. If that question had been asked when Pia was still on, he would have no doubt said similarly complimentary things about her. My main point still stands, Adam swayed no one to vote for her then when people didn’t care as much, and now that people have their favorites picked out, they’re not likely to change. Most of the Glambert I know certainly aren’t, and they’re almost all voting James.

          • Shannon says:

I actually never understood any of the backlash against James from the Glamberts to begin with. Yes, James did say that he screamed “like Adam Lambert”, but he also said he did so because he thought that’s what the judges wanted. The show had pegged him as Glammy 2.0 and he knew it. Ryan’s narration even blatantly stated that they went to San Francisco purposely looking for another Adam like there was a colony of Glambots just hanging around, waiting to scream and strut for America or something.
So, what I think James meant is that he went for a rock scream because he knew that the Idol producers had a raging case of season 8 nostalgia. I don’t think he considers himself an Adam clone, nor was he ever trying to be one. He just knew how he had to play the game to stay in the game. He’s made it quite clear, though, that he is a fan of Adam’s and that Lambert’s Idol stint paved the way for him. There was never any reason for the Glamberts to form such a wrath. If anything, they should’ve been angry with the producers.

  5. Lauren says:

While I agree that last week was James’s best performance to date, it was by no means a moment. Or rather, it’s certainly not like a Heartless or Alone or Summertime or Jealous Guy. It’s a little disappointing that the supposed moment of the season pales so much in comparisons to previous seasons, even if I think overall season 10 has had some of the best singers and most consistently good performances. I hope a real moment happens, with James especially or with anyone at this point.

Also, you do realize that Scotty hasn’t hit the bottom 3 yet either, correct? Last week the final was random.

    • Candy says:

LOL, you mention Heartless as a moment when another contestant that year had at least 15 moments. James hasn’t been great but he’s been better than the Who the Hell’s Harry who won two years ago.

      • Lauren says:

Oh, believe me I know Adam had a ton of moments too, but I was thinking of ones that came later in the season (and arguably his biggest moments, like Track of My Tears and Mad Wolrd, were much closer to the front). Technically, Kris was far more consistent when it comes to being in pitch than James. I really enjoy James’s effort to always give a good show, but his vocals more often than not suffer as a result (unlike Adam who could put on a show and keep his vocals immaculate). Say what you will about Kris’s not having the biggest or best voice or whatever has happened to him since, he knew how to use his voice well and was consistently creative. That cannot be said for anyone this season, even James or Haley, both of whom are my favorite.

        • Frankie says:

“I was thinking of ones that came later in the season” – Moments don’t have to come late in the series.

“arguably his biggest moments, like Track of My Tears and Mad Wolrd, were much closer to the front” – 1. So what?, 2. Debatable as for me and most others I know Whole Lotta Love was a bigger moment.

“Technically, Kris was far more consistent when it comes to being in pitch than James.” – Not debatable. My cat is more consistently on pitch than James.

“I really enjoy James’s effort to always give a good show” – Nah, it all looks too deliberate, as if James has been told “This is how you should stand there” and “This is how you should pace / strut / bend your knees / kneel / look into the camera ……” at every point. There’s nothing natural about it.

“but his vocals more often than not suffer as a result” – You think? My dog’s still howling since Uprising two weeks ago.

“he knew how to use his voice well and was consistently creative. That cannot be said for anyone this season, even James or Haley, both of whom are my favorite” – This year’s lot’s last combined creative cell died of loneliness. That said, I think Kris’ creativity was overrated. His supposedly original performances were known before the shows to be mostly the contributions of others but Kris didn’t have the good grace to thank people in front of the camera.

          • Lauren says:

Well, I was comparing latter moments b/c it’s very late in the competition on the current season. I was trying to compare the now scenario to the then scenario, if that makes sense. And I guess while I get where you are coming from that perhaps Kris wasn’t the sole mastermind behind all of his arrangements, the creativity in his performances was still there and much more so than any of the competitors this year. Adam and Cook both admitted as well to working with others and looking up arrangements on youtube, and they oozed creativity or musicality on stage. This years bunch seem to lack the initiative to do this, except perhaps Case. Even when we’ve seen them stand up to Jimmy, it hasn’t been to take creative risks, but to do a song they liked more in a manner than was barely above karaoke. What makes real moments now is that extra something that none of the contests have shown yet. It’s like they almost get it (opening of James’s performance), but then they suck it all away and don’t reach the mark of a real moment.

      • Ohreli says:

ATTENTION! We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to interject a completely irrelevant and unnecessary dig at Season-8 Idol Winner Kris Allen. Brought to you by the I-Am-a-Fan-of-Guess-Who Club, maker of the grapes so sour they will turn your fingernails black!

        • Sam says:

I’m not and Adam fan but I have to say yes, the fans of the gold, platinum and multi-platinum selling in several countries, international award winning and nominated, Grammy nominated, sell out world tour performing, runner-up have soooooooo much to be bitter about ………………. and absolutely no reason to say “I told you so”, have they?

          • already bored says:

The fact that you mentioned those things just made the whole comment inv… well… okay, I think everyone knows it so I am not going to say it. Can I just say I am just tired of people who has to hate someone they do not even know? I think the world as it is has enough uglies and enjoying your life and loving as much as possible is way to go(kinda sound hippies but whatever) I just don’t understand. Then again, I don’t understand whole Republican vs. Democrat thing either. Maybe I am the crazy one.

        • kriskrazy says:

          Ohreli!! Freakin’ funny! You go!!

      • Snickers says:

Nice pseudonym, “Candy.” We know thats really you there, Simon Cowell!

(You havent been able to bring yourself to actually mention Kris Allen’s name aloud in these past 2 years, have you, Simon!)

        • Frankie says:

I don’t think many other people have mentioned the name Kris Allen in the past two years either.

          • Georgia says:

I have an iPod full of songs and artists of several genres spanning 70 years (No, I’m not 70). I don’t constantly discuss discuss them in online forums. However, count me as a devoted Kris Allen fan who follows his career and awaits his next album with excitement and anticipation.

          • Robin says:

LOL…by the way, given that Kelly Clarkson and several former idols (including Kris Allen) all prefer someone other than James, why are the james fans only angry with the Glamberts ? Since I’m not in the U.S. and can’t vote, thought I’d ask…

  6. Karen says:

Actually, we don’t know who the bottom 3 was last week according to Ryan, so we can neither confirm nor deny that James has never been in the bottom 3. I have the feeling neither he nor Scotty were in the bottom, and that Haley was. I think your 1 and 2 rankings should be switched because Scotty’s got the goods all around, and James has shown more weaknesses than him. Think Scotty’s moment last week should have kept him at #1.

  7. Fracas says:

Oh Michael …….. you said it in your first paragraph, “So what the hell do I know?” …… and proved exactly that in your last. It’s a good job Carole King’s not dead or she’d be turning in her grave after Durbin’s menacing massacre of her most achingly vulnerable song.

    • Ben says:

Actually, he proved the ‘what the hell do I know’ statement in that very paragraph, by suggesting that singers such as Aloha Micheaux, Ricky Braddy, Nadia Turner, Nikko Smith & Katelyn Epperly are better than Jacob Lusk.

Michael, you fall squarely into the category of ‘the singers I like best must be better.’ I’m not a big fan of Jacob, frustrated he outlasted Casey who I really enjoy, but really in that paragraph you openly reveal your tendency to write as though your own personal preferences are a factual account of who is a better singer. Not that getting to the top 5 is an indication you are any good (see: Aaron Kelly), but Jacob really actually can sing, whether you like him or not.

Despite this complete and utter bias, I love reading your column every week lol!

      • corey says:

thank you! ya michael, if you’re reading this, please stop insisting that
        1) james can not physically be TOO dramatic or TOO anything for that matter. he is. and it gets old.

        2) anything anyone does to try to help haley along is automatically a conspiracy against her

        3) that jacob has not talent. (he’s my least favorite left. casey should have outlasted him. but jacob IS a good singer. face it.

        among others.

you clearly hate jacob, and love james and haley, but seriously dude, enough presenting your opinions as fact!

and as ben said, i’m a fan of this column. i can only imagine what ppl who hate the column feel about any of this…

and while i’m here, just want to put it out there- honestly, this season looked so hopeful at the beginning. but with early frontrunners pia and casey (and others) now out, and with others (cough cough jacob) still in at top 5 week, i am thoroughly disappointed. and yes, i blame the judges primarily, for instilling in these kids the feeling that they can do no wrong and are all superstars. somewhere, simon cowell is weeping and weeping and weeping. or cursing. on the show. forcing FOX to bleep it out.(seriously, who keeps doing that?!) But ya these kids are like on an ego trip. they think they will all be stars. what they somehow have failed to realize is that there have been loads of ppl who placed in the top 5 or higher, and they are not sucecssful singers. (all the way from justin guarini to lee dewyze)

        • Frankie says:

So true. The judges this year are pointless. The only one who tried to criticise at any point this season appears to have pretty much given up on the idea after being repeatedly shouted down by Dumb and Dumber.

I mean, seriously, what is the point? What a waste of two whopping great big salaries.

They’re doing these kids no more favours than the now debunked before our very eyes line that this lot were the most talented ever. Give me strength!

  8. SmileIvan says:

Never would have guessed that Haley would end up being my favorite but she really has lately. I feel like the other 4 are all so affected, which is ironically a criticism I used to throw at Haley.

  9. Tom says:

I couldn’t have cared less about Haley and James before Top 13, but week by week they grew on me. Now, they’re my favorites. There will be [Randy and/or Jimmy] blood if La Reinhart goes home this week. I can feel my blood boiling already.

… I better knock on wood to make sure I’m not jinxing anything.

    • Francesca says:

My blood will be there too. “La Reinhart” as you called her (LOL), HAS TO STAY till the end. She’s the real deal. Period.

  10. tamara says:

So it’s pretty clear here. We all want Haley to win. The AI voting system is not right. But hey, like you say, what the hell do we know.

I started watching when they selected the top24, and my faves were James, Haley and Lauren. But now Lauren has long fallen from that category. SHe hasn’t grown at all. I think she should have done more pop-rock, or even classic rock songs. She showed so much promise, but I think they ruined her.

But I’m so glad that despite the lack of support she’s had, Haley is
still here!! and Top5!! that’s huge.
At this point it doesn’t matter if she gets further along, she’s already a winner. I can’t wait to hear her album. But she deserves to be in the final 2, with James.

    Haley FTW!

  11. PHILL says:

all im going to say is HALEY FOR THE WIN!

  12. Francesca says:

I’m with you guys! HALEY FOR THE WIN!!!!!!! But let’s ALL vote as much as we can because she needs all the help we can give her.

  13. Kirstin says:

Yup I am in it for Haley at this point.

    • Francesca says:

YEEES! At least we hear something GREAT when she opens her mouth…… and we can hear jazz, rock, pop, blues, r&b, country… u name it, she can perform it.

  14. Elina says:

” Never hit bottom three ” – How do you know that, Michael? Oh, yes, you don’t.

There was no bottom two or three declared last week, only the person eliminated, and for all we know the two declared safe straight away may have been the two with the second and third lowest votes ……. or do you seeeeeeriously believe Scotty was anywhere near polling the lowest?

  15. Mike says:

Great list of contestants who Jacob has unjustly and improbably outlasted. You can point fingers at Lythgoe, but since So You Think You Can Dance is so much better in this regard, I blame faulty judging. And I think honestly they’re too dumb to even know what they’re saying and how it affects the votes. That, or they’ve just been focusing their energy on trying to get rid of Haley, to no avail, leaving Jacob to wail to his heart’s content.

    • Karen Anderson says:

You forgot to mention Alex Lambert, one of the great lost contestants of last season, gone too soon.

  16. Sam says:

Haley or Scotty for me. The only two there with any chance of a big career after that.

  17. Tucker says:

    My Top 5:
    5) Jacob
    4) Haley
    3) Scotty
    2) Lauren
    1) James

And there is a huge gap between Lauren at 2 and James at 1.

    Realistic Top 5:
    5) Jacob
    4) Haley
    3) Lauren
    2) Scotty
    1) James

  18. DonDDD says:

Let’s all be honest here. Idol needs a winner who can sell, and who out of the 5 will be able to sell a lot? I think everyone could sell well in their own specific genres, like Crystal is, but the winner needs to be at least on par with say Cook or even Lamberts sells to for the show to be creditable again. I have no doubt that James could do current pop-rock, but would he want to? Could he ever be taken seriously in his heavier metal rock genre if he does? Will Jacob be able to do anything other than gospel R&B? Will Haley be able to go the Adele route and make soul funk pop albums? Scotty and Lauren are the only two who have super clearly defined genres that are proven to be high sellers: country and country/pop. It most likely needs to be Scotty or Lauren who wins.

    • Jason S says:

I don’t believe there has ever been a successful Heavy Metal solo artist. So James will have to form a band if he wants to do metal. And before you mention Ozzy and Dio, they were both in Black Sabbath first then went on their own and formed bands using their names. they were never true Solo artists. If James wins the competitition I doubt he will be successful. Metal heads will never take an Idol contestant seriously. The producers will write a bunch of lame popish songs for him and he will be a laughing stock. He would be better off finishing in fourth like Daughtry and forming a band like Daughtry did.

  19. nichole says:

i will be voting my fingers off for her tonight!

  20. Blingedup.susan says:

I’m all for Team Haley. After her, I’m rooting for Scotty. After him, I don’t give a rip.

  21. Mee says:

I am the first to admit that I am one of the people that didn’t really like Haley when this season started but right now I am rooting for her like crazy SAVE THE GROWLER!! LOL

  22. mgl says:

I’m rooting for James and Haley, final two. Don’t really care who wins, although I like James more.

  23. G says:

I know I am in the minority here…but I think Haley is horrible….when is growling singing??but then again this season is not that great anyway…don’t hate just my opinion…I like James…but no one really wows me

    • sara says:

dear jesus, not the growling crap again… Haley does SING. don’t be afraid of the occasional growl she throws in there.

  24. mad says:

Haley, can and does sing. Hands down – the most versatile. Go girl!

  25. Georgia says:

100% of my votes will go to Haley from here out. I really hope she’ll do something sultry and captivating, and not two “up tempo” songs. I’m still predicting James for the win, with Scotty second (?), and the third up for grabs between Lauren and Haley. I’d love to enjoy a couple of weeks without Jacob *or* Scotty. As to marketability, I don’t know. I guess we have had previous seasons go this long without an obvious front-runner, but wasn’t that with lackluster results?

  26. Dera says:

    LET’S DO IT!

  27. Laurie says:

How is Haley number one on the leaderboard poll? I loved her Bennie and the Jets cover but other than that, her performances have been pretty lackluster. She can sing but she isn’t bringing anything new at all.

    • betsy says:

hello!…the duet she did with Casey of the jazz song was absolutely superb and won me over to the Haley team.

      • Jason S. says:

Haley is not only the number one singer on the leaderboard but she is the best singer ever on Idol. She is probably the best singer on the planet. She can turn water to wine and heal the sick and dying with her voice. I believe she was instrumental in tracking down Osama Bin Laden (at the very least the Navy Seals were listening to her voice to pysch themselves up) Her Cd’s will single handlely take America out of the recession. She will most likely be the first female President and will cure cancer!!!! Her songs will unita all the nations and bring on world peace. Believe me it will happen!!! So people if you want to bring world peace to the planet please vote for Haley

        • Sharon says:

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, ever.

          • charlie says:

Jeez, Sharon…. this was satire! But, then again, it is true that voting for Haley and keeping her around through the finale of AI will make the world a better place… well, more entertaining anyway. GO HALEY AND PLEASE, HALEY LOVERS… BE POWER HALEY VOTERS LIKE ME!!!!

    • charlie says:

Do you still believe that after her performance of “House of the Rising Sun’? I went on youtube and listened to a number of renditions of that song by other well-known artists and IMO Haley’s was not only totally new, but so much more powerful and entertaining than any of them.

  28. Jason S says:

Will someone post Haley’s number tonight in Michael’s after show post! Again stuck at work and won’t get to see performance til after midnight. But I still want to vote for Haley!!!!

  29. Donna says:

As a Casey fan, I will be throwing my votes to Haley tonight. Speaking of Casey, he did a stripped-down version (with guitar) of “Harder to Breathe” on Access Hollywood that was stellar. I lament what could have been. Go Haley!

    • charlie says:

Wish someone would post that Access Hollywood performance on youtube. Casey was my fave from the hollywood round. I hope he has a strong post-Idol career like he deserves with his brilliant artistry.

  30. JayK* says:

Your blurb for Lauren made me laugh. Your blurb for Jacob made me cry. (Michael Johns! *sob*) After last week I have decided I am fully backing James. So GO JAMES!

  31. Kim R says:

If Randy says “in it to win it” one more time I’m going to poke my eyeballs out!!! Does he not know any other words??? :)

    • darcy's evil twin says:

I am playing the “drinking game” and watching the show on DVR so I’m a little behind. They are just starting Round Two and I’m already half drunk from the “in it to win its”.

I need to vote for Haley before I’m totally toasted!

  32. Dera says:

Numbers to vote for Haley: 1-866-IDOLS-05 OR 1-866-IDOLS-10 TEXT 5705

  33. Dera says:

Haley was incredible. She sang Gaga’s unreleased song and she was brilliant. Didn’t get pat in the back from the judges. Ugh!!!

Numbers to vote for Haley: 1-866-IDOLS-05 OR 1-866-IDOLS-10 TEXT 5705

Come on let’s vote for her.

  34. Nicole says:

I’m seething with rage right now. I can’t believe how manipulated AI is anymore. James was off key on both songs. Jacob made me want to put in earplugs he was so shrill. And Haley was obviously sabotaged by Jimmy. It’s actually insulting that they think they are fooling us. All three judges should be pushed off a cliff.

  35. davey says:

James sings a song off key, ruins a classic Nillson song, and gets praised for it. I hate this show. Why are we even watching anymore.

  36. Blair says:

“Love Hurts” by Nazareth has always been one of my favorite songs, but Jacob had to massacre it severely by mercilessly pummeling it to death with his shrill sharp as nails sharp tones! I’ll probably never want to listen to that song again. Thanks, Jacob.

    • Kim R says:

Like someone stepped on the cat. It was so bad. I can’t believe the judges throwing Haley under the bus after her first song and still praised Jacob. If he doesn’t go home tomorrow night I’m poking my eyeballs out. He seems so shocked everytime anyone mentions anything that isn’t outright praising of his self proclaimed gift. :(

  37. sue says:

VOTE FOR HALEY TONIGHT!!! Save Haley from all the discrimination she is getting from the producers. Do your part if you like her and vote vote vote!!!

  38. Kerri says:

    Dear God,

Why have thou forsaken us? Was it bad enough to send someone we love, James, out on stage to sing out of tune, cry, and generally lose it? Or when Lauren appeared as some sort of S&M prom queen and faked Carrie Underwood? Why have you cursed Nazareth so? Did they deserve to have their song shot, decapitated and lit on fire—sorry, I mean sung by Jacob?

And last of all, please cast those demons known as the judges, Nigel and Jimmy back into the pits of you know where—SAVE HALEY!!!!

    • Emme says:

      Amen and Amen.

    • Aaron says:

LMFAO!!! One of the funniest things I’ve read in a LONG time!!! I literally had tears in my eyes.

Seriously, I’m honestly concerned that Jacob’s vocal chords may be bleeding after “No Air” and “Love Hurts”…

    • charlie says:

Harking back to Jacob’s performance of God Bless the Child during Hollywood Week, which was quite phenomenal, I’m surprised that he didn’t develop into a much stronger contestant than he has. Bad advice on song selection? Bad voice coaching? Or was he just a one-trick-pony?

  39. Davey says:

Wow, Haley just leapt over everyone tonight.

    Haley–sang well on both songs
Scotty — despite a sleepy version of You Were Always on My Mind, he was decent
    Lauren–so predictable
    James–off key
Jacob–there are no words for his awfulness

    • Ken Adams says:

I couldn’t have said it better myself. And my dad (who’s watching the show for the second time this season) summed up the judges:

“These three are useless. They think everyone can win. Why do they pay them?”

      • charlie says:

RE: the judges… the show would be so much more enjoyable if it let the contestants sing more of the songs and limited the judges comments to less than 10 words. How many listeners really care what the judges think? I sure don’t!!!!

  40. as says:

Hayley, thanks for the 2 new i-tune purchases. Can’t even believe the judges dissed Lady Gaga like that or you.
The Adam Lambert wannabe grossed me out to start with with the arm pit expose…then he followed that up with the screeching cats of Kilkenny.
Jacob, OMG you’re just so BAD….I’ve got nothing else.
Lauren Alaina Underwood…we get it Nigel….but we pass because Carrie is prettier, sings better and she already won.
Scotty….come on, can’t someone, anyone tell him he makes weird bug eyes and awkward mouth shapes when he’s singing? Simon would have.
Judges, please head back to the mansion with your most beautiful bride in the world Miss Havisham and set yourselves on fire.

    • darcy's evil twin says:

“Judges, please head back to the mansion with your most beautiful bride in the world Miss Havisham and set yourselves on fire”.

WHOA! Three snaps and a twist for the Charles Dickens reference. Okay, back to voting for Haley before I’m really gone from that drinking game.

      • as says:

Thank you thank you…..and I meant every crazy word of it !!!
Hayley’s Rising Sun was the first and only Idol moment this season.
Godfather reference-will someone please drive Jimmy Iovine (maybe Slezak) out so some abandoned warehouse in Jersey where he’s clearly meant to be and put him out of our misery!!!

      • JAson S says:

How do you play the drinking game? What are the cues to drink?

  41. SallyinChicago says:

The only ones I see that are “marketable” are Haley and James. I don’t think Lauren has the confidence to make it big….can you say Kelly Pickler? But Haley is on that stage performing and doing her thing. She reminds me a lot of Alison Ireheta how she just takes over the stage.

    • charlie says:

Probably would have been better if Lauren had waited a few years to audition. She was great in her audition and I was expecting great things from her, but it seems her immaturity has held her back from developing the needed moxie and confidence. BTW Kellie Pickler seems to be doing quite well. She’s not having Carrie Underwood-type success, but seems to be having a nice career and also a nice post-Idol life.

  42. Maria says:

James needs to be voted off. His back story is absolutely ridiculous. He can’t hold a job to help pay for this son and make ends meet so he goes on American Idol so he doesn’t have to work.

I see him working at McDonald’s in a year.

    • charlie says:

I suspect you are one of the right wing lunatic fringe totally lacking in empathy for anyone less fortunate than yourself. Unfortunately, way too many of this type in the USA, along with a lot of wackos and morons– many of whom are or have been in high office, like ‘W’!!!!

  43. heelarryous says:

    james all the way #1!
