The cabler announced on Monday that the Jeremy Irons-fronted crime-family drama has been picked up of a 10-episode second season. Borgias‘ opener gave Showtime its best premiere ratings for a drama series in seven years.
“The Borgias has become Sunday night appointment viewing for a broad swath of our subscribers,” Showtime president David Nevins said in a statement. “Neil Jordan’s cleverly crafted tale of a 15th century papal family has proven quickly addictive.
“It’s a tribute to his incredible skills as an auteur,” he added, “and to the extraordinary cast led by Jeremy Irons that this show fits so seamlessly into our line-up of quality shows.”
Production on the second season begins this summer with an eye towards a 2012 premiere.
