FX Powers Up Casting: Who Should Cop Roles?

The time to play Armchair Casting Director for FX’s Powers is now.

As part of FX’s Tuesday upfront presentation, network president John Landgraf shared his plan to launch two new dramas over the coming year — and the previously announced adaptation of the Brian Michael Bendis/Michael Avon Oeming comic book series is a strong contender for a winter launch.

“We hope to begin production [on the Powers pilot] somewhere between late May and early July,” Landgraf told TVLine.

Given that schedule, Landgraf said, “I don’t have anything to announce yet” in terms of casting. “But we’re going to get into that process pretty actively in the next couple weeks.”

FX Renews Archer, Reveals 2011-12 Programming Plans

Powers follows two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are tasked with investigating homicide cases involving people with superpowers — and you can be sure that fans of the books have passionate opinions on who could fill either live-action role.

When it comes to Walker, Oeming himself has shared (on a forum hosted by Bendis) his preference for two familiar faces, though one of them is otherwise committed: Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) and Owain Yeoman (who is currently on The Mentalist, though damn if he isn’t the spitting image of Walker).

HitFix’s Alan Sepinwall, meanwhile, has suggested Holt McCallany, seeing as FX’s Lights Out won’t be back for a second round. Landgraf deemed that idea “really interesting” when we spoke to him.

For Deena, Powers fans were quick to lock in Battlestar badass Katee Sackhoff as their No. 1 pick, but she has since gone onto book a role on the A&E pilot Longmire. With Starbuck out of the mix, there has been no particular consensus on who else could play Walker’s partner, though commenters on Bendis’ forum tossed around such names as Brea Grant (Heroes) and, yes, Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars). But even Bell is also committed to another pilot, Showtime’s House of Lies.

Oeming also weighed in on one of the secondary characters, saying that Rob McElhenney (of FX’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) would be spot-on as Detective Kutter.

Until casting starts taking actual shape, only this much is known about FX’s Powers: Charles Eglee (The Walking Dead) wrote the pilot and will executive-produce with Bendis, Oeming, Michael Dinner and David Engel, while Dinner will direct (as he did for both the Sons of Anarchy and Justified pilots).

Meet the ‘Freaks’ of Ryan Murphy’s Top-Secret Horror Story Pilot: Who Would You Cast?

But first out of the gate when it comes to new FX dramas is “likely” to be American Horror Story, from Glee‘s Ryan Murphy and Brad Fulchuk and starring Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights). Landgraf said the cabler’s next new drama could premiere as early as this fall.

Who would you cast in Powers as Walker and Pilgrim?

  • I have to agree about Allison Mack. I also think Kristen Bell would be great but Allison would play this role perfectly. It would be great to see her outside of Smallville.

  • I can see that this article has been infiltrated and invaded by smallville chloe/Allison fanatics. The length those people will go to pimp her, ~shakes head~.

  • “Allison Mac as Deena, what about Justin Hartley as Walker, they both have great chemistry.”

Chlollie fanatics you can just stop the mind games (it stops with smallville), because its NOT going to work this time. We have heard enough of your whining demands. Btw walker is nothing like JH. You know its ridicuolous and very far fetched but you don’t care because you have the me me syndrome, you want what you want, even if it doesnt make sense. You gotten used to smallville runners bowing to your every demand.

Brian Austin Green looks great for the role, for deann a young actress will be fine.
    anyway -

  • They should cast Kyle Chandler as the lead male. Holt McCallany is yesterday’s news and totally wrong for the show. That would be another mistake from Langraf.

  • Allison Mack as DEENA!

If FX casts Holt McCallany as Walker I will NOT WATCH! He’s wrong for the part, and he’s too old.

I hated Lights Out, the most boring and predictable show FX has come up with.

If you want to KEEP YOUR VIEWERS, Langraf you better cast someone better for Walker. I beg you as a fan of your network, DO NOT HIRE HOLT. It’s bad casting. The casting of Walker is too important and would throw the balance off with Holt in it.

Let it go to a younger and more fun actor to watch.

  • Tahmoh Penikett 100% He is the total package. You could get me tuning in to watch him as Walker weekly. He’s so sexy and also a great actor!

  • Owain Yeoman because he looks just like him and is a great actor.TAHMOH PENICKETT would be great as well. Love the comics and look forward to seeing them come to life.Holt Mccallany is not a good choice he’s so much older than the character and not attractive to me, the other actors are better casting and cute.

  • Josh Holloway is just perfectly gritty, sexy and humorous! Give him a haircut and he’d be the best Christian Walker!

I’m in agreement. Holt McCallany is too old and just not who fans would choose for Walker. Take it from a true fan.

  • Walker is such a key part. I think Brian Austin Green might be an interesting choice, Tahmoh Penikett is sexy and both of those actors would appeal to me and the younger demographic that is FX’s audience.Holt mccallany from Lights Out thats a ridiculous idea. He’s not right for Walker, he’s like 50, if you read the source material he’s on the younger side.

Comment by Randall – May 12, 2011 12:10 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Either Tahmoh or Owain would be perfect choices for Walker. They are fresh faces for FX and they could get the younger people like me interested in tuning into the network. Mostly I don’t watch FX shows because they don’t seem relatable to me. But Always Sunny is funny.

  • Victor Webster as Walker—-HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!! Also a great actor and looks the part.

Comment by Jamie – May 14, 2011 06:04 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Holt McCallany is talented but he’s far too old and Landgraf would be a fool to cast him in a show right after his last one got destroyed by ratings, he’s not right for Walker. Landgraf isn’t dumb enough to cast him right after a failed show.

My money is on Tahmoh/Owain (Even though he’s committed to The Mentalist-he looks just like him) or someone I think would be just fabulous is Josh Holloway. He’s a strong lead and so fun to watch!

Other interesting Walker choices would be Victor Webster-agree-

  • Dean Winters for Christian Walker. I saw it on another fan board. Great casting

Comment by HarrowPunk – May 15, 2011 02:16 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Tahmoh Penikett – A great star making role for him. The guy is a huge star in the making. FX would be smart to snatch him up. He’s got the right look and tough guy feel for Walker, he’s young enough to get the demographic for FX. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Katee Sackoff-Deena Pilgrim is a good idea.

I hope Bendis is creative with casting. I’m in agreement that to cast Holt would be a bad idea. Especially right after Lights Out got no viewers. It’s redundant. Fresh meat!

  • Definitely agree with all those who said Allison Mack for Deena. She’s a great actress and I believe her already established fan base will bring many viewers to this show.
