Exclusive: Glee's 'Born This Way' Episode is Getting Super-Sized!

Glee‘s April 26 outing is so big that even its usual 60-minute time slot can’t contain it. Sources confirm to me exclusively that the episode is jam-packed with good stuff to the point that Fox will likely expand it to 90 minutes.

Coincidentally, the unorthodox installment features the music of an artist who knows a thing or two about breaking the rules: Lady Gaga. While not another tribute outing, the episode’s theme of self-acceptance was inspired by the singer’s runaway hit “Born this Way.” In fact, the title of the episode is “Born This Way” and it concludes with a rousing performance of the No. 1 smash.

Before that, though, the kids grapple with their own body image issues. For example, Lauren (Ashley Fink) runs for prom queen, in so doing challenging the traditional notion of what a pageant princess looks like. Rachel (Lea Michele), meanwhile, considers getting a nose job.

Although much of the episode has already been shot, I’m told producers — pending a firm go-ahead from the network — are planning to go back and incorporate two additional musical numbers to fill out the expanded running time. It’s not clear if those numbers will be Gaga-related.

A Fox spokesperson declined to comment.

Thoughts? Below you’ll find all the space you need to share them. Hit it!

    Wow! This will be awesome!

    • AlistairCrane says:

Born This Way is an awful song–I don’t think I can stand 90 minutes based on it!!

      • S says:

If its so awful why has it been the best selling digital song on itunes and #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks now?
Its a great song with a beautiful message

        • BFIrrera says:

…why has it been a best selling single? Because people are sheep.

Beautiful message? Sure, if you ignore the racist treatment of Asians and Latinos in the song!

          • VballBaby158 says:

Couldn’t agree more! Neither “Born This Way” or “Judas” are good songs… Ick. I’m so disappointed in Lady Gaga. Sell out. I appreciate the message it has, but she could’ve spent more time on the lyrics and the beats etc to make it better…

        • seg says:

…So has Rebecca Black’s “Friday.” Your argument is invalid.

      • Ronan says:

I personally love the song and i think it is fantastic but if you don’t like the song itself you can hardly hate what it stands for. Its telling people to be themselves and accept who they are and make the most of themselves. You cannot hate that surely. Lady Gaga is a beautiful, talented and inspiring woman whos impact on the world will last for decades after she is gone. xxx

    • MarkatLarge says:

The Good thing about Glee is it takes risk – Unlike American Idol that Censored ‘Born this Way’ – http://bit.ly/eDozXs

  2. Steven says:

As long as Raising Hope is then on at 9:30 I don’t care what they do.

  3. Jess says:

This would be amazing, but I’m not going to get my hopes up just yet. (That’s a total lie, they’re already way way up.) But this episode better have a good amount of Kurt and Karofsky storyline advancement. *nods*

    • suebrody says:

Yes, more Karofsky and Kurt resolution. Please. YES YES YES

    • suebrody says:

This gives me hope that they are taking the Kurt/Karofsky story line seriously, and not just wrapping it up with one scene and Born This Way.

I don’t know if this is the prom episode–I don’t think so–but it sounds promising!

    • Mads says:

Don’t count on any kind of resolution. Glee doesn’t seem to know what a story arc is. Also, enough with the stupid themed episodes. And since when did Glee go from a “comedy” (I use this term lightly since it seems more like a teen drama) to a PSA?

  4. Danielle says:

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.
…So I guess you could say am somewhat excited.

  5. DLGR says:

You’re not April Foolsing us like WetPaint, right Ausiello? You wouldn’t be that cruel!! RIGHT!? T_T!

    Anyways, this? Is AWESOME….ifit’strue. lol

  6. Christine says:

I really don’t like that song

  7. Dee says:

This would be so much more meaningful if “Born this way” was a complete and total rip off of “Express yourself” and “Vogue” -I used to love Gaga but I think the pressure is getting to her and the last few singles have been exceptionally contrived and derived and while I love the message of “Born this way” I find Glee of all shows celebrating this song with and entire episode leaves a bad taste.

    • Dee says:

      * wasn’t such a rip off

      • Teresa says:

OMG it was a total rip off. I can’t stand Madonna or Gaga, but as soon as I heard the opening beats of that song, I asked my hubby if Madonna had recorded a new song and he said no that it was Lady Gaga’s. I said she should get sued. We old people heard these songs when they first came out and for sure there are huge similarities.

    • Jacob says:

Born This Way is the only Gaga single at which I’ve ever felt the need to roll my eyes.

But if it’s the ending number and the title only, then I don’t care. As long as it doesn’t turn into a tribute episode… There are more than enough songs about self empowerment to fill a 90 minute time slot.

    • Becca says:

      Completely agreed.

    • V says:

      You said it.

  8. Jennifer says:

I’m getting sick of hearing about Glee. 90 Minutes, really? Not necessary. (btw I really like Glee but I get tired of seeing every news story and awards show centered around it).

  9. kathleen says:

My money is on the Karofsky/Kurt issue being involved with Blackmail and Kurt’s transfer…and Sue, somehow…

  10. Lily says:

That’s great news as long as they’re not turning Karofsky into some woobie. But I trust you Ryan, Brad and Ian. You guys got some surprises coming for us, don’t you?

  11. Tyler says:

I’m down with it, but as long as I get to see Raising Hope that night. I don’t really like the song either, but maybe the Glee kids can do something with it to make me like THEIR version of the song, cause Gaga’s is mediocre. =P

  12. Anna says:

Don’t really care about Lauren, but interested in the Rachel story.

  13. angel says:

    omg

    SAM IS FINALLY COMING OUT

    • Rebeccapedia says:

I wish this was true!!! I saw it on the comments over on E! too, where did this start? The GMMR reviewer said that comment Sam made about wishing to be as close with Artie as Santana and Brittany are might have been an indicator of where Sam’s character was going, but I thought it was a throw-away joke. I hate when people say they are enough gay kids on Glee already, there are not, Sam and Quinn need to acknowledge their gayness and Puck has to be bi as well! I don’t understand why people think it would be a big deal to have a show with teenage kids where half of them are gay, I think it’d be GREAT. The only coupling I ever really loved was Rachel and Puck, and it’s been pointed out time and time again that Rachel and Finn belong together (WHY?! THEY ARE AWFUL TOGETHER!) so why not REALLY mix and match the others? Sam/Santana was not good, (worth it for Trouty Mouth though) Sam/Quinn was HORRIBLE, Sam/Kurt or Sam/Puck would be so much better!!

      • angel says:

Chord was cast to be Kurt’s love interest and a lot of fans think this hasn’t changed. Sam obviously has a big secret, he dates girls for popularity not because he likes them. Look at his relationship with Santana, that is obviously not because he likes her. It is because she said it would give him status at the school. Sam has been established as a character from the south, possibly religious (his reaction to the I’m Born Again song in Duets), his dad is a fan of hunting. We are going to meet his siblings and presumably parents soon which is a perfect set up for them to be conservative and homophobic. There is a spoiler that says he will be kicked out of his house and have nowhere to go and we saw pics of Chord, Lea and Cory filming outside a sketchy motel. Sam also turns down Rachel for a prom date because she isn’t his type. DO THE MATH. The most obvious explanation is he is GAY.

        • Rebeccapedia says:

AMAZING! I love you for this! I will admit though, it is super easy to win me over, I read somewhere about Quinn being a pressed lemon, looked that up, (thank you Urban Dictionary!) found out it meant repressed lesbian, laughed, thought oh how ridiculous, found a tumblr thread listing the reasons why she’s a closet lesbian (there are loads, but how I missed the big ones like the fantasy of the girls in the football uniforms and the drawing hearts around her Rachel-beast cartoons is beyond me!) and basically now I’m 100% convinced. Plus you could really nearly just substitute Quinn in for Sam in your explanation, she dated Sam and Finn for popularity, religious with conservative parents, etc.
Now I really hope that Sam comes out, you’ve definitely won me over! He and Kurt would be SUPER cute! (I find Blaine a bit greasy and smug tbh)

  14. Taylor says:

Why not give the Lauren story to Mercedes? She deserves something.

    • Tausif Khan says:

Exactly, except the story should not focus on Mercedes weight. She should get a story line that makes her character unique and not only show a surface level issue.

  15. Crissy says:

And in a supersized episode, watch us PQ fans still get nothing. Not a look, not a scene. =(

    • Suz says:

Man I used to love Puck/Quinn. :( Now I’m so irritated with Quinn that I think it’d be best for Puck to stay away from her and stay with Lauren for awhile. I hope they deal with all of her issues soon though and that the two end up together in the end!

  16. Lucia says:

    Yay!!!

I hope it means they’ll take the Karofsky storyline seriously and not just wrap it up and chao.

  17. Midori says:

So pretty much what they are doing is adding 6 minutes of footage and 24 minutes of commercials?

  18. Raksha says:

    I am so excited!!

  19. Frank says:

I wasn’t looking forward to this one cause it will probably be another after school special and now it may be 90 minutes long?

And really the comic relief is going to be fat jokes and big nose jokes?

  20. A. says:

I hope Santana is involved in all the Born This Way storyline. It could be a good character development.

    • Suz says:

Totally agree. I’d love to see her get involved in the Karofsky storyline. I feel like a Santana + Kurt alliance could be epic! So much hardcore b*tchiness, so little time.

  21. Rebeccapedia says:

Oh yeah, a 90 min ep would be AWESOME! I love Rachel, this nose thing is worrying, probably means she’s back with that douche-bag Finn and he’s ruining her self-confidence again!! :(

I know it’ll NEVER happen, but I’d love Kurt or Mike to be prom king!

I hope one of the extra songs is a Rachel solo, (you can NEVER have enough Rachel solos!) but I imagine if it’s the prom ep it might be another Warblers one since they are supposed to be performing at prom.

    • Jami says:

don’t count out Kurt! I heard that he’s prom king. if so, that would be AMAZING!! Anything, just as long as Quinn doesn’t get prom queen. it’ll teach her a lesson..especially if Rachel wins it :)

  22. Marc says:

I’m really excited about this episode!! I like GaGa’s song, i just think that video is badly made. Hope the Glee version clarifies Born This Way’s message. I would love to see Kurt/Karofsky storyline come to a mutual conclusion.
@ Taylor, Mercedes is getting a solo in the upcoming episode on April 12

  23. Rasha says:

They already did a Gaga episode. I hope this isn’t another Gaga-fest and is more about the message of the song.

  24. Kate says:

ONE GAGA SONG IS ENOUGH THANK YOU!

I want the rest of the music to be back to Glee goodness, showtunes and classic oldies that us youngins dont get to hear on the radio every single day! P

This is all i wish form this episode, oh wait less on the Santana front as well please, shes had way too much attention this season!

    • Derek says:

I agree. One Gaga song is plenty. But, I completely disagree on the Santana front. I think she’s become the show’s most complex and interesting character this season.

      • Kate says:

See Ive always been a massive Rachel fan, and Santana has just always seem to bully her and they have only addressed this once and then it was swept over, so I cant stand Santana!

  25. John Berggren says:

I hope Karofsky is front and center for the title song.

  26. H says:

My main excitement for this is definitely Karofsky. I keep having people remind me that it’s NOT just him that’ll be in the episode. :p

  27. Kfir Medenitzky says:

A-W-S-O-M-E!! THIS IIS GONNA BE NE OF THE BEST EPISODES EVER

  28. ARL says:

Didn’t they already do a Lady Gaga themed episode…?

  29. Leo says:

I say yes if they gives us more Mercedez and Tina, that are such underused characters, with that extra time. And please not more than one Gaga song, my ears can’t stand more than one Gaga song per month, let alone in such a short space of time.

  30. Eran says:

Is it just me or are they slowly replacing Mercedes with Lauren? I mean first the Puck pairing and now the size issue..

  31. John says:

I despise that talentless whore (Lady Gaga). She rips off several other artists and passes it off as original. Heck, she even sued a store for marketing a product under “Baby Gaga,” which, as we all know, are words associated with babies! She’s fame and money hungry.

    • Marcus says:

You don’t have to like Gaga – I could do without several aspects of her persona, including the obsession with fame – but she is an extremely talented live singer, unlike the vast majority of current pop icons.

Additionally: Can we please stop using “whore” to mean “woman I don’t like”? You just come off as a jackass.

You just come off as a sexist moron.

    • kashiichan says:

Can we please stop using “whore” to mean “woman I don’t like”?

THIS. ^ It’s sexist and ignorant.

  32. Rachel says:

Bring Kurt home!! (And less Lauren. She’s actually pretty annoying.)

    • Amanda Leigh says:

      Second this – HATE Lauren.

      • Kurt says:

3rd this…despise Lauren..the “attitude wall” she puts up as a cover for her insecurities is getting really annoying…her character is just a pushy, angry bitch. The writers need to address this..or get rid of her…there’s nothing likable about her at this point…nothing.

  33. dsfasdfa says:

Why cant they have a normal episode with like only 3 songs like the first half of the first season!!!

    • $$$$$ says:

Because Fox wants to make money. Why do you think we have been stuck with Blaine so long? He was supposed to be in two or three episodes. Now he’s getting more solos than everyone except Lea Michele all because Teenage Dream did well. NONE of his other songs have done as well though and his songs without the Bubs do not make as much money.

  34. Marcus says:

Oh, my comment wasn’t censored for the profanity, it just didn’t show up until I resubmitted it. Lovely. Anyhow, here’s hoping it’s not another Gaga-centric episode. Tribute episodes are almost universally the worst episodes of Glee, with the exception of the alcohol-makes-you-bi episode.

  35. Rachel says:

I really hate “centric” music episodes. The last gaga episode wasn’t that great and neither was any of the others. I think the writers focus on making the songs to much like music videos and it gets too karaoke.

  36. Amber says:

I literally cannot wait for Born This Way, and there better be plenty of Karofsky on my screen…

  37. Strepsi says:

I had a dream about a dream. I actually dreamed that KAROFSKY was in a dream sequence, singing “BORN THIS WAY” backed up by a dancing Kurt and Blaine. The 3 of them were in black tank tops and black jeans. And Mercedes sang the chorus floating, wearing angel wings. It was fantastic. And, yeah, I need to get out more.

I hope they follow through on the hints this season that SAM has some serious body issues: his almost manorexia, the teasing about his lips. It would be nice for him to get a bit of a juicy story.

  38. Amanda Leigh says:

Another Lady Gaga episode? WHY, Glee, why?

  39. Lila says:

I’m very excited for this episode and the others to come. I love the relationship between Kurt and Blaine and I believe Kurt especially deserves an on-air love interest since the incident with the Homophobic bully Karofsky who happens to be in the closet.Jesse better make one heck of an apology to win back Rachel…and Rachel just really needs to forget about Finn who is an idiot for getting back with the girl who got Knocked up by his friend. Back to Karfowsky, I really hopes he comes out or at least won’t harass Kurt when he comes back to McKinely. Glee is my all time favorite show and it continues to not disappoint….except for Blaine’s bisexual storyline…because he and Kurt are meant for each other.

  40. Jami says:

I’m so glad that they’re bringing Gaga back!! Her music is amazing & the message in Born This Way is very moving. It would be great if it’s incorporated into the situations of Santana, Kurt, and Karofsky. Probably Rachel as well, since it mentioned the potential nose job. Anyway, this Little Monster is super excited!! :D

  41. Erin says:

Cannot express my excitement for this episode (really for the rest of the season in general) but kind of wish I didn’t know it was going to be 90 minutes. It’s making the wait even more unbearable. I think I’m just in withdrawal from the current hiatus, so any little bits of info about the last season 2 episodes are a million times more exciting. I actually couldn’t care less about the lady gaga aspect of it (don’t love her, don’t hate her) but I’m so glad that, from what I’ve read, we’ll start getting to know the characters on a deeper level as season 2 wraps up. Most excited about Santana, Sam, Mercedes, and Kurt. Honestly, I LOVE all the characters and their stories but as far as singing goes, I could definitely do with less Rachel and, to some extent, Blaine. They both have incredible voices but they’ve gotten more than enough time and all my favorite episodes and performances have ended up being the ones when others have gotten the spotlight. Just sayin.

  42. DRAMANURSE says:

I’m suprised that there aren’t that many people talking about the Brittany/Santanna coupling. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m more excited to see there story developed. Also I Hate Karofsky, Always have. Homophobs are really annoying and the fact that he is juct a closet case makes it all the more worse. Kurt and Blaine are adourable and should not be broken up, Puck and Lauren (although strange) is a good match up because it’s gotten Puck to stop being shallow and started to make him more comitted, and I’m sure as soon as Puck has gained Lauren’s trust she will show a more sensative hurt part of herself. Love the show and hope it keeps going strong.

    • hi says:

It seems like now that Puck’s finally gotten Lauren to go out with him, their dating isn’t referred to anymore. I would have like to see something about them in the last episode.

  43. DRAMANURSE says:

and another thing, I really really doubt that Sam’s character is Gay. When Sam made that comment to Artie about how he wished they were as close their gilfriends were, that wasn’t him coming out. Sam isn’t that bright, he didn’t get that that song was Santanna’s way of telling Brittany her true feelings of love. If he did he probabely wouldn’t still be “dating” (If you can call it that) Satanna. No Sam is definetely not gay, he’s just trying to be popular. He’s a great guy, sweet and loving which is why he should get back together with Quinn. She never tried to change the nerd in him, and Sam was always really goo to Quinn and I think they look cute together.

  44. Kuya_Hutch says:

Charice shall be singing this song…she’ll kill it and will sing it big! Much anticipated!

  45. Jaz says:

A good example for the verse “no matter gay, straight or bi,lesbian transgendered life” would be Brittana and Klaine

  46. irvin zelaya says:

i cant wait for the episode. i think its gonna be my favorite episode because its about lady gaga.

  47. katuhcake says:

Honestly after seeing last nights episode.. this one has to be better.. last nights was good for the fact that Mercedes got attention but the rest of it I found a little dry. Santana almost knowing about Karofsky, is just a starter for drama.. I think last nigts episode was just to build for next weeks.. I am highly excited, Gaga is exactly my favorite, but the meaning of the song is what they are basing it on.. I hope.. so it could be awesome! I am truly excited!

  48. peculiarmind says:

i’m excited for Naya Rivera.. i wonder who’ll be her new love interest… geeee..

  49. mst says:

I was really saddened when I heard that the Warblers would be soon bidding goodbye and Kurt would go back to Mckinley. Dalton is such a dreamy school and I wanted to go to that kind of school although its entirely fictional. The Warblers is one of the two reasons why I’m watching Glee. The other one is KLAINE. KLAINe is the first of its kind. The first gay romantic comedy wholesome enough to be viewed by all types of people. It is not the stereotypical gay relationship which founds relationship solely from sex. As a gay kid, its not always about sex. It is about love and companionship. Sex is just a spies that adds flavor. I hope relationship like this should be portrayed in our media. We gay people are not evil. We also believe in goodness and Divine Mercy.
