Wonder Woman First Look: Yay or Nay?

Here’s your first look at Friday Night Lights‘ Adrianne Palicki channeling her inner Lynda Carter in NBC’s David E. Kelley-produced Wonder Woman reboot. The pilot — which is currently in production — is one of several high profile projects in contention at the Peacock.

  1. Matt says:

The boots are the wrong color.

  2. mrjzn says:

I was hoping for something a little more modern-looking. Not feeling it.

    • George says:

My thoughts exactly! I’m not sure if they were going for some kind of balance between modern & retro, but either way it doesn’t work fore me.

    • RP says:

Agree. This is really cheesy. Let’s see the Batman Begins take on Wonder Woman (alright, maybe not quite, but something more modern would be cool).

    • Delon says:

I thought the NBC execs said that this will be a non-campy, serious take on the comic book heroine. First of all, why would you have a non-campy take on a super campy character? Secondly, what would be more campy than this outfit?!? And finally, it doesn’t look like a comfortable outfit to fight crime in. I smell cancellation after the third episode.

  3. Nicole says:

I didn’t like the pick for Wonder Woman, and it makes it worse putting her in that costume. Definite nay.

  4. Anumber says:

she’s also wearing more clothes ;)
but she looks good. i’m curious to see how this will turn out.

  5. RMH says:

This is the most hideous thing I could have imagined. I don’t see this making it to air.

    • darclyte says:

My hope that it doesn’t make the air has nothing to do with this costume. I’ve read the script reviews and oh my, the story is terrible and makes WW out to be a tool.

  6. Deion says:

Have they considered using the new costume she’s in in the comics?

    • darclyte says:

This looks to be a “remixed” combination of the classic look and the new look in the comics (pants instead of shorts, boots same color as pants.)

  7. CHRIS says:

This New Wonder Woman costume is a yeast infection just waiting to happen

  8. W0NK042 says:

Looks like a (very) bad drag act.

  9. alxf9 says:

More of “Why does this show need to be made?”

  10. Gare says:

That lasso looks like it could hog tie..a 2 year old…

  11. Nonya says:

The whole costume looks overdone. Trying way too hard. Too shiny. Too much makeup (the kewpie doll look doesn’t work on Wonder Woman).

  12. Alex Warheit says:

I was hoping that SOMETHING from this show would make me excited after hearing about the awful Wonder Woman/Ally McBeal script. This is the last straw. Those AWFUL spandex-y looking pants?! AWFUL! I’m so sad that they’re ruining the first great female super hero.

They should have let Joss Whedon make his movie.

    • Matt H. says:

      Why Whedon?

You do know that he already had his chance to write and direct a big screen version of WW right?

He had the project for two years and never got past the outline stage. Warner’s finally fired him when it was obvious that it wasn’t going to ever go any further than that with him.

Whedon isn’t the end-all-be-all of strong women, sci-fi or comic franchises.

      • Alex says:

I said Whedon specifically BECAUSE he had a chance to do the movie! And the studio never liked his take on it. I can assure you it wouldn’t be the Ally McBeal discussing boys over ice cream that this version reportedly is. Why do they have to dumb down Wonder Woman?

      • Alex says:

Not accurate. He developed a full treatment and script that took him a very long time and a lot of effort. Then submitted it and heard nothing. When he finally heard back from Warner they basically said they didn’t like it and that was it.

  13. Maro says:

Ummm she looks gorgeus but yikes that outfit is scandalous!

    • A Noun says:

THIS outfit is scandalous? This outfit is covered and prudish compared to what the old WW costume was…which wasn’t scandalous either.

Perhaps you’d like her in a Wonder Burka?

      • Brittany says:

“Perhaps you’d like her in a Wonder Burka?”

Oh, no, that’s not totally uncalled for at all. Good lord.

Here’s why it’s “scandalous”, since you can’t see it for some reason – it’s head to to skin-tight PLEATHER with her breasts pushed up and out, on display for everyone to see. While I don’t much like the word ‘scandalous’, it sure isn’t prudish.

        • Michelle says:

If you’ve seen the original costume, Ms. Carter’s breasts are more exposed than this one. Go Google and see for yourself.

          • Kate says:

Don’t know what pic you were looking at but no, the originals were not that on display mainy because you can’t get natural breasts up that high. In fact looking at pics of Lynda and Adrianne side by side makes you say ” Oh yeah, that’s what real hooters look like”. Ah the good old days.

  14. Tiva4Life says:

My Eyes!!! even Lois costume in Warrior was 10x better.

  15. lethargic says:

I hated it at first. But then I figured out that if I scrolled the page down enough to cut off the head and only see it from the neck down it looks pretty good.

    • Anna says:

I tried that, but then something else caught my eye. I’d expect something like this from Spike TV, but not a broadcast network.

  16. kirti patel says:

Looks like a bad halloween costume.

  17. SapGoblin says:

Costume is just blah…pants/color is the worst part. Totally unflattering casting…except for the bustline she looks like such a butter-face.

Liz Hurley set-pic looked like an Amazonian beauty. Let’s see her in the suit!!!!

  18. Michael A says:

YUCK!!! I just do not see Wonder Woman. I see a girl dressed up in her own home made costume for Halloween.

  19. syvyn11 says:

Shares some simularities with the current outfit as designed by DC Comic co-publisher Jim Lee that is used in the comic book right now.

It seems to be a mix of the classic and new.

Not totally in love with it, not hating it either.

  20. bb says:

this looks like a bad Halloween costume. Join the rest of us in the 21 century, NBC!

  21. Loiter says:

Face, bland. Body, stick figure with implants. Miscast.

  22. A5 says:

I Think the Costume looks good, modern enough and Wonder Woman does not look cheap. Always thought the underwear looked ridiculous. Lynda Carter made it work though, in 2011 it would not. The Blue boots do not bother me that much.

  23. allie says:

Yeesh…this is not looking so good.
    WAAAAAY too shiny and plastic-y….
This show is losing me more and more with each new reveal.

  24. Carson says:

With all the ways this could have gone wrong? I think they did a pretty fantastic job. They changed enough details to put their own stamp on it, but overall it still feels like the traditional Wonder Woman costume. I love the subtle use of stars, the incorporation of both the eagle and WW logos, the gold-striped boots echoing the traditional red ones, and the inclusion of the bracelets and the lasso. Really my only reservation is the long pants (which are getting a little bunchy around the boots) but they would probably look weirder as latex shorts, so I can roll with it. It looks like this costume is getting a LOT of negative knee-jerk reactions online, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.

  25. DryedMangoez says:

Granted, Adrianne Palicki can make anything look hot, but this certainly isn’t helping boost the show’s image.

A lot of people were weary about the show using the new costume that debuted in Wonder Woman #600 last year. That costume might have been better, and removed some of the campy preconceptions about the show.

  26. Sparky says:

I wish the boots were red, but I dig it! It’s just the original costume, but with trousers instead of a skirt.

But of course everyone’s going to be up in arms about it… just like the change of costume in the comics.

  27. CraigM says:

It would look better if they used the traditional red boots and gave her some black pants instead of blue ones if they’re afraid of offending folks (or having the actress freeze) by having her wear the star-spangled shorts. Looks good from the waist up though.

  28. Erin says:

No no no no no. Thank goodness they don’t make Underoos (like they used to) anymore—would hate to see this replicated.

  29. Jami says:

I think it’s absolutely terrible :-( And I have always loved Wonder Woman. I’m old enough to remember having WW underoos! They were better than this new outfit. I also am disappointed in the choice for the character of Wonder Woman. It’s all looking rather bleak.

  30. anthy says:

I don’t like the actress and I don’t like the suit.

  31. Aileen says:

What the xxxx!!!!! That is horrible!!!!! It dies look like a drag queen! This better not make it to air

  32. CB says:

Looks cheap and plastic – maybe if the leather were dull instead of shiny, it would look better. Not real sure about the blue boots, either.

  33. Moni says:

She’s no Rachel Bilson aka Summer Roberts.

  34. mike says:

Wonder woman’s costume in the comics is ridiculous; anyone expecting anything better needs their head checked. This is decent, and far better than the recent comic re-imagining.

  35. Goddess Lisa says:

Wonder Woman was an Amazon Goddess and this Costume just does not reflect that. It Does not show enough skin for one. Honestly, where are her legs, and if she is going to be forced to wear pants her boots should not blend into them.

  36. JDuro says:

    Oy, pray for Adrianne.

  37. Jorge Jose Herrera says:

Lose the pants, make it a skirt, red boots not blue and make the lasso look less like a tweasly little rope.

  38. Lorie says:

The suit is awful. I’m embarrassed for her.

    • Chatty says:

Me too! I was hoping for something closer to the Justice League look, where Diana looks like she could kill you with her little finger. Also, I don’t know if it’s the makeup or what but – God forgive me for saying this – I have never seen Adrienne look this ugly. Her face looks horsey! How is that possible? She has always been pretty on television. I don’t understand what happened. Now I’m dreading the idea of this show.

  39. MC says:

I’m not sure who is responsible but whoever took a beautiful woman like Adrianne Palicki and made her unattractive (hair, makeup, costume…everything!) should be fired post haste.

    • Ace says:

Agreed! Adrienne Palicki is beyond gorgeous, but this hair/makeup combo is shockingly unflattering on her.

I’m not a fan of the costume, either… mostly because of the shiny vinyl-ness and the too-bright colors, I think. In leather and darker colors, it would work better.

(And give the girl some straps, for heaven’s sake! How’s she supposed to fight crime if she’s worried one of her boobs might pop out at any second??!!)

      • Ace says:

And when will Hollywood stop expecting women to run and jump and fight in high heels? That’s distractingly impractical.

  40. erin bowers says:

Well she is no Linda Carter

  41. Jamie says:

It’s just pure cheese. It looks so cheap.

I can’t see how a Wonder Woman costume can look good, though. Maybe it’ll be better in the show as she won’t be standing like that.

They should have made a SUPERGIRL series with Laura Vandervoort. Would be better.

  42. sonofbaldwin says:

The fact that the costume is so shiny makes Wonder Woman look like a hooker–a hooker that could probably kick your ass, but still a hooker. And something tells me that was exactly the strategy in order to snag the coveted male 16-24 audience.

That said, this costume at least LOOKS like a Wonder Woman costume, as opposed to the new costume in the comic books.

  43. Brittany says:

They’re going for “serious” with this show, and this outfit in no way reflects a serious show. It’s camp, through and through. Additionally, you’d think they’d streamline and modernize this to fall in line with the expectations of today’s female characters (ie, characters that are not sex objects first and real women second). This costume is marketed for a certain crowd, that’s for sure.

  44. waw says:

I think that for the new series the new costume in the comics would be great. Especially given how they are positioning her as a CEO.

  45. Jenn says:

This is a joke right?! That outfit is awful!

  46. spacedaisie says:

Stop hatin’ haters! She looks amazing!!! Loves it!

  47. Jones19 says:

I wish the boots were red but besides that I love it!

  48. Steve says:

For the record, it should be “Yea or Nay.”

  49. Dani says:

I’m so happy they didn’t slut her up! It’s still not the most practical outfit ever, but I think it is sexy and powerful!

  50. Derek64 says:

Oh it isn’t THAT bad. I wish they would just give her blue tights instead of those weird metallic pants. Oh, and the boots should probably be more solid. And the plastic gold plating looks too much like a power rangers toy!

Yeah okay, so that was a lot of criticism, but if they used materials of higher quality, then the costume would look a lot better by default.
