Breaking: NBC Renews The Office, Community and Parks and Recreation

Get More: News, Renewals

It looks like some of that Irish luck is rubbing off on our favorite Greendale/Pawnee peeps today: NBC has renewed Community and Parks and Recreation for a third and fourth season respectively. In less surprising news, the Peacock has also picked up The Office for an eighth season — its first without Steve Carell.

“I am so pleased to renew these three outstanding comedies which are all at the top of their game creatively,” said NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt.  “Along with [the already-renewed] 30 Rock, they represent the best of what the NBC comedy brand stands for in terms of originality, wit, and sophistication. The Office continues to fire on all cylinders on the most competitive night of television; Parks and Recreation has come into its own this season as the rightful companion to The Office; and Community is one of the freshest comedies on any network and a solid foundation for Thursday night.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

No word yet on the fate of fellow NBC bubble shows Chuck, Parenthood, Perfect CouplesOutsourced and The Event. In the meantime, TVLine’s handy Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect today’s good news!

    • V and Parenthood are the only remainders on my wishlist. Parenthood’s odds are a bit better though. If only V were on NBC. Those miserable ratings wouldn’t be so miserable.

    • Lots of luck with V. It’ll take a miracle.

Comment by Kelly – March 17, 2011 12:49 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • WOOO!

Was worried that we might lose both Parks and Community with all the comedies they have in the pipe.

At this point NBC might want to just go to 2 nights of comedy. They can’t seem to make an hour long show to save their lives at this point.

Comment by Fred – March 17, 2011 12:50 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Fred, I’m just as pleased as you are. P&R and Community are NBC’s two best comedies at the moment and to have lost either would have been terrible, to have lost both would have been a disaster of immense proportions.

And yes, NBC ought to try two nights of comedy which would be a throwback to their glory days of about 15 years ago when pretty much anything they put out as a sitcom became a much loved classic: Seinfeld, Friends, Cheers, Frasier, Mad About You, NewsRadio, Just Shoot Me, Will & Grace, Scrubs, etc.

      • So true. I’m not a fan of Parks & Rec. but I am happy that Community is coming back. And Enver is on it tonight!! I hope that Perfect Couples is also renewed – it’s turned out to be surprisingly good. Other than HIMYM, no other network has a good sit-com, so I too think it would be wise for NBC to go for two nights of comedy, not just one. My Tuesday is pretty empty – lots of space for more comedy that night.

      • I don’t know if they’re going to want to put a comedy block against Glee on Tuesday. But, ABC had Wednesday covered and CBS has Monday so they have to put it somewhere I guess.

        • Monday night goes to Fox. One of the best nights of the week. Glee leads Tuesday off with other excellent shows.

Comment by Janice – April 24, 2011 02:09 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • Glee is a mess now. I loved it the first season, but I stopped letting my 12 year old watch and I gave up on it, too. And all of our gay friends hate it now also, so it’s not that the Kurt/Blaine storyline is the only problem. (I could listen to Baby It’s Cold Outside 1000 times) Why did Sue Sylvester’s sweet sister need to die? All the “original” music is crap, and the show is basically just a vessel for itunes now. As Tina Fey said, “Is Glee even a thing anymore?” Nope! I don’t know anyone that watches anymore or even DVRs it. Bye bye, Glee. NBC could put something mediocre up and and people just looking for an alternative to Glee would be there! Come on NBC…do it!

      • I don’t know why Glee and Modern Family get all that attention either. They are heavily over-rated, in my opinion. Community, The Office, 30 Rock and Perfect Couples are much better.

    • I agree.

Comment by Carrie – March 17, 2011 01:06 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I thought V was a movie about Guy Fawkes in a post Orwellian London, but I stopped watching ABC (as I said I would) when they cancelled Eli Stone. Some of the most entertaining TV (you know, that which causes me to go out and buy advertized products!!) is Chuck, Parenthood and Harry’s Law. I have my concerns though – each requires that the audience member be awake to enjoy – although I don’t suppose that’s needed for ratings.

Comment by Steve – April 21, 2011 10:38 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Glad about Community and Parks. The Office lost me a few years ago…I’d rather see Outsourced survive. Dietrich Bader is hilarious.

Comment by Amy – March 17, 2011 05:20 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Wow, you’re surprised at all by those renewals? Lol. Community has averaged about 95% of NBC’s scripted new episode average since January. Parks&Rec has 125% of said average. Neither was in any danger of cancellation. Amazingly, statistical analysis actually produces a pretty solid picture of how scripts shoes are performing. And that’s why the Renew/Cancel Index is the superior measurement method.

That’s also why, even though I’m a fan of both Fringe & V, I’m comfortable with the extreme likelihood that both will be cancelled in May.

Comment by Jason – March 17, 2011 06:03 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I want Chuck….I’m happy for those three, but Chuck deserves a 5th season.

Comment by Rev – March 17, 2011 06:05 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • How is Community going to have a third season? Community colleges usually are two-year programs.

(happy news nonetheless :D just wondering if they’re going to address that)

Comment by Mim – March 17, 2011 07:42 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Each season is a semester, so they’re good for 4 years :)

Comment by Elka – March 17, 2011 08:57 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Each season of the show has actually been a full year. The winter hiatus serves as ‘winter break’ and the summer hiatus serves as ‘summer break’. We’ve had Christmas and Halloween episodes both years so far, so they’ve definitely been doing one season=one full year.
I don’t know how they’ll handle it, but I trust the writers to come up with some reason as to why they are all staying there. I know the Community College in my town was only a two year program, but I’m not sure if that is true for all Community Colleges.

Comment by Christine – March 17, 2011 09:52 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • You’re totally right, I’d forgotten about the Christmas/Halloween episodes. I just assumed since they changed from Spanish to Anthropology between the first and second years that each class was one semester.

Now I’m really interested to see how the writers handle this! Maybe they’ll treat it as a regular 4-year college program anyway?

Comment by Elka – March 17, 2011 10:34 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I’m still too disappointed about ‘The Cape’ to be happy about this.
