Ratings: Idol Darkens Mr. Sunshine's Day

The forecast called for Mr. Sunshine to take a beating this Wednesday, hampered as it was by the double whammy of a having a Modern Family repeat lead-in and facing off against the hardest-hitting half-hour of American Idol‘s Top 13 performance show.

As a result of that imperfect storm, ABC’s freshman sitcom Smurfed 32 percent of its audience (dropping to 4.8 million viewers) and fell 25 percent in the 18-49 demo, to a series low 1.8).

That in turn set a wobbly table for bubble show Off The Map, which placed third in the 10 o’clock hour with 4.3 million viewers (down 14 percent) and a 1.4 rating (down 20 percent).

UPDATED Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s Getting Axed?

Elsewhere this Wednesday:

* The aforementioned Idol sing-off averaged 24.24 million total viewers and an 8.0 rating, improving on its week-ago tallies. Compared to the same night a year ago, Idol matched its demos and increased total viewership by 6 percent. Not too shabby, dawg.

* In the 8 o’clock hour, Survivor (10.94 mil/3.2) saw little movement while Top Model showed off double-digit gains (delivering 2.33 million viewers and a 1.1 rating).

* At 9 pm, The CW’s Shedding for the Wedding (1.03 mil/0.5!) shed another 10 percent, keeping its weekly ratings summary easy to write.

* Opposite an SVU repeat and ABC’s folding Map yet leading out of an Idol-impaired repeat, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (9.06 million viewers/2.2 rating) was down some 12 percent.

Too bad about Mr. Sunshine. I’ve really enjoyed these last episodes including last nights. But those numbers aren’t impressive.

  2. Quirkydude says:

Watch Survivor, then start watching the TiVod AmericanI Idol. Catch Mr Sunshine on Hulu… Tivo the new Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior. kind of glad Modern Family was repeats

  3. AlistairCrane says:

I hope Mr. Sunshine ends with Chandler waking up in bed from Monica and it was all a bad dream.

  4. Valerie says:

It makes me sad for writers when reality tv outrates scripted shows :(

  5. Kevin says:

I had to quit Mr. Sunshine last night. About half way through the episode I realized it hadn’t been funny since the pilot. Really wanted to see Allison Janney on TV for a while but that isn’t going to happen with this show. Just hasn’t brought the funny.

  6. Thom says:

All I thought of was Michael watching Mr. Sunshine…damn he should have had a cameo on there at least

  7. Liz says:

I don’t recall Lux’s numbers being as bad as Shedding for Wedding. I hope The CW is proud that they canceled a good little show for that failure Biggest Loser wannabe they have now.

  8. Elizabeth says:

I flipped over to Mr. Sunshine – I know what’s going to happen on American Idol and if I need to see the performances, I can find them online. I don’t think this first round really constituted a 2-hour show – its about 50% performance/judging and the other 50% is a massive waste of my time.

  9. kikidee says:

In Canada we get Mr. Sunshine on Mondays at 8, a much better placement so we watch as a family. My kids like it and will be sorry if it goes…can’t they find a better timeslot on American television?

  10. Jamie says:

Shedding is doing the same as LUX in the Women. Plus all CW shows have fell since fall, LUX would have done the same, I hate to imagine what the numbers would be now.

I miss LUX, but they made a good business decision.

  11. John Hooper says:

I predict in two years no-one will remember Mr Sunshine.

  12. Janet says:

I love OFF THE MAP, I just think it is badly placed! Terrible time slot! Move it to a better time and I think it could do great!
