Julianne Moore to Play Sarah Palin for HBO

Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin? Youbetcha!

The four-time Oscar nominee will play the former Alaska governor in Game Change, an HBO original film based on the best-selling book of the same name and depicting John McCain’s 2008 run for the White House.

Known primarily for her feature film work (she was part of the cast of the Oscar-nominated The Kids Are All Right), Moore’s most recent TV role was an arc on 30 Rock, playing an old girlfriend of Jack’s. She also was heavily yet unsuccessfully courted by NBC to front the network’s aadaptation of the U.K.’s Prime Suspect; Maria Bello ultimately was tapped to follow in Helen Mirren’s footsteps.

Game Change will be directed by Jay Roach and written by Danny Strong, the duo behind HBO’s Emmy-winning Recount.

No other casting was announced by HBO, so we turn it over to you: Who is your John McCain?

    Isnt it obvious? Kirk Douglas

  2. Scott says:

Should have gone with Erica Durance. Just sayin’.

    • Ryan says:

      Haha! Smallville reference :P NICE!

      • Scott says:

But you see it right? Just look at any scene with Erica in a suit and glasses and it’s staring you in the face.

    • Michael says:

Scott, the essences are scary between the two women. Erica is able to bring to life the most likeable parts of Sarah.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed the Durance/Palin similarities.

I’m glad she’s not playing it though; it could be a career killer a la Faye Dunaway and Joan Crawford.

  3. Brian says:

I like Morgan Freeman for the role of McCain.

  4. Scott says:

As for McCain. Michael Hogan. If that doesn’t happen this casting director should never be hired again! :)

    • DL says:

So true! Would love to see that. Hogan even has the right sort of voice for it. And I totally remember seeing some Col. Tigh/McCain mash-up signatures a few years back.

  5. John Berggren says:

I hope she does a better job of stupid than she does of Boston accent.

  6. 4F says:

My furreal pick to play McCain: Ryan Cutrona (who played Betty’s dad on Mad Men).

  7. Maddie says:

As long as she does a convincing accent, it’s fine. I mean, could anyone stand her Boston accent on 30 Rock?

    • TvTroz says:

Can anyone stand the Boston accent in general?? (ducks for cover) Seriously, try sitting through “The Town” (unless Ben Affleck’s acting gets you first).

  8. Malcolm Johnson says:

I was going to suggest Richard Dreyfus…again, but I did not consider Michael Hogan. That’s a damn good idea, Scott.

  9. Josh says:

Julianne Moore as Palin gets me excited, but I feel like the best part of this story is that Jay Roach/Danny Strong are doing the movie. Recount was unbelievable. For someone not all that interested in politics, I was riveted the entire time.

  10. Marty says:

God, why does Moore, who is a great actress, generally pick such crappy movies? It’s like every 10th movie she manages to find something where the script doesn’t suck. The rest are almost straight to DVD quality.

  11. Joe says:

Michael Hogan for McCain. No one else will do.

  12. Eric says:

Maybe Richard Dreyfuss as John McCain, but Ilm not quite sure who I’d favor otherwise.

  13. Joshua Reid says:

    Kevin Tighe
