Community Plays Politics: Jeff and Annie (and Star-Burns!) Run for President

Why, yes, that is Dean Pelton (played by the incomparable Jim Rash) rocking his finest Uncle Sam duds — but what’s the occasion? This Thursday’s Community (NBC, 8/7c) of course, which brings political satire — and a faux Joe Biden — straight to Greendale.

“Joe Biden is coming to campus so the Dean is frantically trying to assemble some sort of student government,” Alison Brie tells us of the episode. “Of course, Annie is superexcited to run for president, and when Jeff (Joel McHale) fails to help, she gets upset at him and he runs against her. So they get into a bit of a battle for president.”

And with that battle inevitably comes some smoldering sexual tension between the two — and Jeff/Annie fans everywhere rejoice.

“Their flirtation is not over,” Brie offers. “There is a push-and-pull between the two of them, and there’s a bit of that tension throughout the election.” But, she cautions, “Their spark is not totally dead and you may catch glimpses of it [on Thursday], but we’ll have to wait and see if it’s going to amount to anything in the future.”

Elsewhere on campus, Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed (Danny Pudi) are documenting the election — which also includes bit-player candidates Star-Burns (Dino Stamatopoulos) and Leonard (Richard Erdman) — on Greendale’s newly discovered local cable access channel, GTV.

“Tonight’s episode is similar in tone to [the] Troy and Abed in the Morning [tags] and made me feel like we were doing that because we’re playing news anchors and we have our mugs with us and a whole crew,” Pudi laughs, “except this is real. Abed [also] knows that the CIA is all around campus and it becomes an interesting noticing-versus-noticing session.”

And if this premise sounds at all familiar, you’re not alone. Explains Brie: “At first we thought this was going to be very similar to [last season’s] debate episode which also featured Annie and Jeff, but as we were shooting we realized that it is a political satire.”

  1. JT says:

Jeff/Annie is creepy and I hope they stay far away from it.

  2. RP says:

So excited. I love Jeff and Annie, but I kinda like them not being a couple either. They’re really different and the group dynamic as a whole would probably shift a little, so sprinkling in the little chemistry moments are my favorite.

  3. Jenn says:

So excited for some more Jeff/Annie tension! Best couple on television – they have insanely awesome chemistry, especially when they get to fight with one another, lol.

  4. Alex C says:

    I love the Annie/Jeff dynamic.

  5. savanna says:

Jeff and Annie’s tension is the best! I love their intense arguments.

  6. LP says:

I am so sick of Community being “The Jeff and Annie Variety Hour” this season. Enough already, the pairing is creepy and their dynamic feels like father/daughter half the time.

    • Becca says:

It hasn’t been all Jeff and Annie this season. In fact there really was no hint until episode 8, and it hasn’t been every week. It’s probably been only 3 or 4 episodes that you can really call Jeff and Annie episodes. Other people might see more because they are wearing shipper’s goggles but otherwise there is more Troy and Abed as a couple than anyone else.

  7. elsa says:

YAY Jeff and Annie!!!!!!!! They have the best chemistry ever. Imagine the sex.

  8. Aileen says:

Jeff/Annie chemistry is NOT creepy at all. To not use the outstanding chemistry of Joel/Alison will be a shame. FYI, REAL people in real life had been on LIFE long relationships with even more age difference that J/A so to say is creepy is more like a way to dismiss this pairing, which is so sad to see. EXAMPLE (google if you like) Lauren Bacall/Humphrey Bogart-long life relationship. Recent couples that nobody says nothing about (ironic, huh) George Clooney/Elisabetta Canalis, Matthew McConaughey/Camila Alves, Brian Austin/Megan Fox, Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes, Michael Douglas/ Catherine Zeta Jones, Harrison Ford/Calista Flockhart, so on. That said, Yeah, Jeff/Annie for the win!

  9. LLL says:

Jeff and Annie have amazing chemistry. Love them.

  10. Teresa says:

There is absolutely nothing creepy about Jeff/Annie! She is twenty now, and definitely old enough to date Jeff. If tptb could have foreseen the amazing chemistry between Joel/Alison (which makes the pairing even better as it happened organically) I wonder if they would have made Annie older? I’m sure the naysayers would find another excuse to dislike them either way.

Anyway…I’m very much looking forward to tonights episode. It’s always icing on the cake for me when they are Jeff/Annie centric. You can just see how much Joel/Alison enjoy playing off each other. They have the best banter/sexual tension I’ve seen in a long time.

  11. Becca says:

Both my favorite couples on Community tonight!!! Troy and Abed have the best bromance on t.v. period. Jeff and Annie have the best guy and girl relationship on the show romantic or not, but I prefer the former :p. I don’t think I’ve shipped a couple this hard before. Agree that the age issue doesn’t matter since there were and are successful couples that work. Also some of my favorite fictional couples have an age difference like Mr. Knightley and Emma and Mr. Rochester and Jane Eyre.

  12. Anne says:

Ugh, really? More Jeff/Annie? They have some chemistry, but they are just wrong for each other. Annie still acts like a little girl and Jeff is jackass. Nothing hot or awesome about that.

  13. Ashley says:

I adore the Jeff/Annie relationship. He pushes her to be tougher, she pushes him to be a better person, and they both learn from each other. They don’t need to get together right away, but maybe when they graduate…

  14. cesyya says:

omg!! i love jeff and annie they are so right for each other just perfect, lets all admit that ok!! lol

  15. Ashley says:

How is Jeff and Annie creepy? 20 and 32? That’s not creepy. Men don’t mature as fast as women. I know plenty of people who have similar or bigger age difference and make great couples. It’s about a connection and chemistry, and J/A have both in a big way.
