Scoop: Bones Spinoff Lands Saffron Burrows

Ex-Law & Order: Criminal Intent detective Saffron Burrows has joined Fox’s prospective Bones spinoff, sources confirm.

Burrows joins the previously-cast Geoff Stults and Michael Clarke Duncan.

The planted pilot, which will air as the 19th episode of Bones‘ current season, is based  on The Locator books written by Richard Greener and centers on Walter Sherman aka “the Locator” (Stults), a former military policeman who can find anything.

Burrows will play Walter’s confidente/sidekick, a bar owner who knows her way around a helicopter cockpit.

Ohhh that’s very exciting news! I’m a huge fan of Saffron! Loved her in The Bank Job and then again on Boston Legal (not so much on L&O:CI though. I’m looking forward to the spin off – I’ll have to check out the book!

  2. Chris says:

Is it just me or does Saffron Burrows sound like a pornstar’s name? Put it in n the same article as the word cockpit, and my inner adolescent squeals with puerile delight.

  3. greenerpuddles says:

A spin-off is built around a beloved secondary character of an existing show. This is more of a crossover with a show that doesn’t exist yet.

    • August Meidling says:

Worked with NCIS which has had a longer run than JAG did. Loved the characters, looking forward to the show.

  4. Al says:

Just my opinion, but that’s not a spinoff to me. A spinoff is a show that has a regular character from the original show, like Lou Grant and Maude. These planted shows, as you termed it, just doesn’t make it a spinoff.

Please don’t get me started on “filmed on location”!

    • DJ says:

I was thinking the same. They need to come up with a new term for it. I was wondering who was leaving the show to start this one.

    • Lady E says:

I agree – this is not really a spin off. And the author has only written 2 books so the whole premise of the show is not very formulated. I just requested it from the library so we’ll see. It sounds interesting but certainly is not a spin off.

  5. Ryan says:

Yeah they are more like backdoor pilots

    • DL says:

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. It’s a backdoor pilot being aired via Bones, not a spinoff. Granted, they can still do crossovers, but a spinoff would be like, “Zack Addy’s Magical Mental Wonderland.” ;)

  6. El says:

I like her but probably won’t watch. I had originally that that Katheryn Winnick would be cast in the pilot. But then she was not well received by many fans, either her character or the actress, so maybe they changed the character.

  7. GimplyGump ☺ says:

I’ll try the show. While I agree, this is no spin-off, it does sound decent.

    • DL says:

I’d say it all depends on the writing. The cast is quite solid, and they’ll perform well, regardless of the material. However, I’d say of late only one in five pilots doesn’t come off as campy or overly expository in the writing (my personal opinion, of course), so for me that’s what will make or break the show.

  8. Pat says:

Won’t be watching the show, she’s dreadful.

  9. bo koop says:

Saffron Burrows is a show ender not a show starter. ended Boston Legal ended CI.

  10. Mel says:

GAH. She’s a HORRIBLE actress. In that she CAN’T act!

    • Nikki says:

Wow! Just watched the crappy pilot which aired during the episode of Bones…. Well, when you want to watch a show that you like and you see everything but the show you actually like and all the actors are blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Horrible and there is no chemistry…Then you know you don’t want to watch the crappy show with horrible actors!!!!

      • Spectre says:

My opinion is that most pilots are crappy… they are just made to sell the show to whoever is in charge at the time that it will be a good idea to go forward with making a higher budget show. That dosn’t mean that the same people will be playing the charactors if it is picked up as a steady series… most bigtime series don’t have the same people playing the parts after they are picked up… look at the pilot for Smallville… they changed the actress for Martha Kent and that was for the better.

  11. TheReader says:

I’ve read the pilot. They needed someone older, wise, mysterious for that role, and/or a 50 years old woman. That would be almost revolutionary in TV. The character was very well written, it’s a waste now.

  12. Blake says:

Yikes. Sorry, but I thought she was horrid on L&O: CI.

  13. amy says:

If “Bones” hadn’t turned into such a parody of itself this season, maybe I would have seen this pilot and liked it. As it is, who knows, I’ll wait to hear, but I doubt it.

  14. Corinne says:

I wonder if she’s seen Happy Town because Geoff Stults can’t act.

    Poor thing.

  15. Corinne says:

However, I don’t remember much about her own acting abilities.

  16. Vince says:

This is the 2nd Law & Order star to be on a new show, thats good news

  17. Emma says:

A Bone’s spin-off? I am so going to have to see this!

  18. lace says:

This isn’t a spin-off, besides it sounds boring.

  19. Emma says:

Just watched this “spinoff” its god awfull, the premise is ok but the acting is just horrible, Saffron Burrows attempt at an English Cockney Acent is right out of Mary poppins it was bad then and its worse now. This could have been really good without the overacting.

    • Coleman says:

Have to agree with Emma. Premise OK, but I have doubts about it holding up given that there are only three books so far. Even with Michael Clarke Duncan the acting was not good. And yes, the accent was abysmal. I couldn’t understand half of what she said.

  20. mary says:

I think Saffron Burrows is a great actress, if you haven’t seen the bank job or the guitar, she was really good in those. I think her cockney accent was pretty accurate,I go into london a lot, that IS actually how a lot of cockney londoners speak. I only watched l&o CI once or twice, her american accent wasn’t incredible but she did enter the show as Kathryn Erbe (who returns next month) exited it so it’s no surprise she was badly received. I think Bones fans didn’t like the spinoff because it took over the episode, whilst I love Bones it didn’t bother me at all, the same way hannah didn’t bother and cam never bothered me, because it was obvious neither character were unlikable or actually going to end up with booth, just as I’m sure the next episode of Bones will be more about Bones again.

    • jo douglas says:

I am English and Saffron is English yet her accent is awful. Why not just use her normal voice instead of some terrible london atempt. I could not concentrate on anything she said as i was just thinking how bad the accent was all the time.
