Exclusive: Charlie's Angels Casts First Angel

Meet Charlie’s first new angel.

I hear that General Hospital cast member Annie Ilonzeh has landed one of the three leads in ABC’s Charlie’s Angels pilot. The project, from Sony Pictures TV and Drew Barrymore’s Flower Films, is a Miami-set modern take on the Angels, centering on a new trio of young and sexy private eyes – Kate, Abby and Marisa – working for a wealthy mystery man.

Ilonzeh will play Kate, a very smart and very athletic ex-cop and a master of martial arts. She is the most serious of our three Angels, but also knows how to let her hair down and have a great time.

Ilonzeh, best known for her current role as GH‘s Maya Ward, recently did arcs on HBO’s Entourage and The CW’s Melrose Place. Her film credits include Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Katie Cassidy and Stephanie Jacobsen, done!

  2. Amanda says:

Hmmm so I wonder if this will lead to a character exist or recast on GH.

  3. Kris says:

This is good/bad news. Good for GH cause it means her awful character is probably gone but bad for Charlie’s Angels cause she truly is a terrible actress. She added nothing to GH and struggled to deliver the simplest of lines. Wont be sad to see her leave.

    • cpb says:

I think that was an awful thing to say about, Annie Ilonzeh. For the short time she was on the GH, she did well. I wonder where your heart and judgement towards her on GH, was in the first place. LET’S SEE HOW YOU FEEL, IF THE ROLE IS RECAST.

  4. John Mcrorie says:

The show needs a big name pull. How about Katee Sackhoff or A.J. Cook?

  5. AlistairCrane says:

I hope this new series follows the continuity of the original series and films (remember, the films were set in the same fictional universe as the tv series). I bet Drew will cameo as Dylan at some point—perhaps the pilot?

  6. LoopyChew says:

John McRorie, I’d have to disagree with you on your suggestions.

Katee Sackhoff a big name in the same way Summer Glau is, which is that she appeals to the sci-fi fan demographic, and most people will associate her with “nerd fandom” because of appearances on things like The Big Bang Theory. I doubt her role on 24 earned her any fans–Dana Walsh had an insanely thankless plot that only meandered toward any sort of relevance before the season finished up.

As for AJ Cook, her claim to fame thus far has been playing JJ on Criminal Minds, which while it’s a fairly popular show I’d be hard-pressed to say is a “big name,” at least not one that’s going to draw people into the show on name power alone.

The “big name” here is, in fact, “Charlie’s Angels.” The audience will tune into the first episode to see how it is, and whether or not it lives up to their expectations because it’s a franchise which has already established itself amongst both the older (original series) and younger (film) generations. Thus, there’s really no need for big names in the cast. Attractive women with good comic timing, however, is a must.

I agree with LoopyChew — “Charlie’s Angels” is THE BIG name here. No need to have any other name. But whoevers cast needs to be a good actress with comedic timing. Unless they do a serious remake. And not a spoof like the movies.
You could have a name do Bosley. But even then. No need.

  7. sammie says:

Meagan Holder shouldve gotten this!!! Eek, Kris you couldn’t have said it better.

  8. Bella says:

I’m burned out on remakes, especially in t.v. series. I can’t think of one that has worked. They need to come up with some new ideas. Or if they remake a show, they need to call it something else entirely so that fans of the original show are disappointed by the weak and fuzzy clone.

    • John says:

The Battlestar Galactica remake worked in a pretty epic way, and H5O is decent, harmless fun. I’m sure ABC would love a milquetoast little procedural performer like that on the schedule. (maybe to pair with Castle?)

  9. Rusty says:

Unless they want only tweens to watch this show, which would bring it a fast death. They should get someone who can act and has somewhat of a following of any sort. Using unknowns has a high degree of failure. Of course they can resort to them wearing booty shorts and low cut tops and lots of bikini shots since they will be in Miami. But then it will be just another Baywatch with guns show. Time will tell. They better get some great writer/s for the pilot for whomever they cast.

  10. ZmaXcharmvill3 says:

Kristen Bell should be cast as Abby!!! She would be PERFECT!!!!

  11. Alex Miley says:

Ok so does anyone else agree with me about Becki Newton of Ugly Betty fame? Hysterical, beautiful, and serious when need be. Plus, she needs a good new series!

  12. Emma says:

i’m not racist, but, why black?

    • LoopyChew says:

Because, why not? Thandie Newton was originally going to be Lucy Liu’s part.

Token minority throw-ins are just that–an opportunity for someone of a minority ethnicity to get exposure on TV. No point questioning “why.”

Besides, she’s hot, and that’s as good a reason as any.

  13. navy689 says:

Cast Summer Glau and you have in fan base — plus she can act and handle most stunts. The more I see of this actress the more I am impressed just how talented she is —

  14. Sammy says:

I think that Cote De Pablo would be absolutely perfect for this role! She’s gorgeous, can kick-ass and already plays an agent. Also her contract is coming up for renewal from CBS this year.
