Until ABC’s Wipeout is ready to stage an all-celebrity edition — and believe me, the show does want to — a standing invitation has been issued to Modern Family funnyman Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who last summer lobbied (via Twitter) to tackle those slippery slopes, perilous platforms and giant red balls.
“I’ll say publicly to Jesse: If he wants to come on the course, he doesn’t need to wait for a celebrity version. He can come as a special guest,” executive producer Matt Kunitz tells TVLine. “We could have a lot of fun with that.”
Kunitz says that Wipeout talked to Ferguson’s reps when the actor first showed an interest in braving one of the show’s courses. But as with other celebs who have expressed that wish, “When you tell them, ‘You know we’re gonna put you on the show,’ they say, ‘Oh, no. I just want to come and run the course” — without the cameras running.
Wipeout host Jill Wagner says that serving up a celebrity edition remains on the show’s wish list, but coordinating schedules looms as a major hurdle, since a multiple-day commitment is required. (Topping her own invite list: Kanye West, “because you know he’d tweet about it!”)
Wagner herself would love to see an all-stunt person edition, “because they should be able to do this show very well.”
In the meantime, the Wipeout team is reveling in the boffo ratings for last week’s premiere of a special “winter” edition. “That was a nice little late Christmas gift,” gushes Wagner, “and a great way to start the year.”
ABC’s Wipeout airs Thursdays at 8/7c.
